About the property

Self catering vacation rental with private pool and gardens near Siena and Pisa

Il Collonzolo is a peaceful medieval country villa sitting in an unspoilt valley on the border between the provinces of Siena and Pisa.

The thick stone walls and the original layout of the inner rooms give this house an ancient atmosphere and a lovely cool temperature in summer.

In winter the large fireplace in the living room creates a cozy nest.

The simple and rustic decor and the natural setting of the vacation house rental take you back to the slow pace of rural life.

The house is made up of 3 bedrooms each with its own full bathroom two of which, a fully fitted kitchen and a living room with fireplace are on the ground floor.

On the second floor, with its own entrance, sits another bedroom with en-suite bathroom.

The garden develops over different levels and features different eating and relaxing spots under the secular trees, a hammock, garden chairs, a little wooden playground for children and a pool.

Enjoy 4 hours free access to the nearby spa.

In our view Awful

  • 1 of 5

I can only add to the last review by Lisa K, which unfortunately was not there when we booked, otherwise we would not have booked.

Arriving in the evening with a 2½ year old we were unable to go somewhere else, so we had to stay for one night, but we left the following morning. Hence our review may miss lots of positives and possibly some more negatives.

There is “Simple and Rustic Decor” and there is, Uncared for, Unsafe, Uncomfortable and Unwholesome.

Whilst this is advertised as “Family Friendly” we did not find the property to be so. It felt damp, the paths were uneven, rocky and unsuitable for toddlers, the downstairs bathroom water was scalding, my wife, burnt her hand, there was no Warning Sign. Surface mounted electrics of poor quality and with suspect safety. Bathroom cabinet rusty, containing old boxes of remedies, toilet holder broken, step to bathroom broken, radiator edge broken, pool slabs loose and unsafe, playground equipment not screwed down, unsafe, shower heads tiny, blocked not working properly, rusty plug hole in bath............

This is obviously an old and very basic conversion. The Description and early reviews for the property led us to believe that it would be fine for a family, but we found that it was way short of the standard that we find acceptable these days and there are many hazards for young children.

We left and stayed somewhere else.

Owner's Response: "Arriving in the evening ....., but we left the following morning. Hence our review may miss lots of positives and possibly some more negatives. ... there is, Uncared for, Unsafe, Uncomfortable and Unwholesome." Guests stayed from the night (tired after a long car journey with the dark in an unknown land) until the next morning. I think I've said it all!

Ideal location - property needs updating/TLC

  • 2 of 5

I believe in being honest and fair Leaving a review which will be helpful to others.

The location of the farmhouse was ideal for exploring Tuscany. The house was a good size for our group of 4 adults and 3 children.

There are several issues with the house which need to be pointed out. The owner lives on site so the house is split for her accommodation and the rental. We strongly suspect the owner entered our part of the villa whilst we were on a day trip, making us feel uncomfortable.

There are 3 dogs on the property and a cat. I am allergic to dogs and wouldn't have rented a property knowing dogs were on site. They didn't pester us, however they did use the property ground as a toilet, urinating outside the kitchen and dog poo in several locations, most disappointing was at the sand pit and play area where my three children had played until we noticed. One of the dogs barked until the early hours and then started again at dawn which really disturbed our sleep, he was outside close to our bedroom. The owner must hear the dog herself.

The kitchen had an ant problem which is something easily sorted with the correct pest control. We were constantly getting rid of them off the work surface, in the kettle and near the fridge.

The fridge does not work correctly not cooling food down especially on the top shelf where the door area gets very hot when in use.

The BBQ was dirty and we didn't want to use it.

The internal photographs aren't recent, we didn't use the two sofas in the living area as they were dirty and stained. The terrace seating area chairs are very old and are starting to deteriorate.

The bathrooms were very dated, the shower heads didn't work properly, the main bathroom was very basic and both this and the master en-suite need the black mold removing from around the shower.

One of the bedrooms has its own entrance, it is not connected to the house with an internal door, which is important when you have young children as you wouldn't be able to put them in this room without an adult or older child, it contains the bunk beds so would have been ideal for our three boys.

The pool is a good size and has plenty of loungers and umbrellas. The flagstones are a hazard as they are very uneven. The pool edge needs some maintenance work.

The local medieval town of Castelnouvo is beautiful, there is a lovely square in the new part of the town. Spending a bit of money would make for a much more pleasant stay as it was reasonably expensive to rent

Owner's Response: Very disappointed about the presumption of “being honest and fair leaving a review.." Guests NEVER told Velia about any issues during their stay, telling her "everything is OK". Why? Let's proceed in an orderly fashion: “owner lives on site”: clearly stated on our website (Velia, the owner who lives on site); Collonzolo is a very big house divided in 2 TOTALLY INDEPENDENT units, each with its own private entrance and pertinences. NEVER been a problem! “the owner entered”: Velia NEVER enters the house without having asked the permission of the rentors and just in case of needs (eg. change light bulb or similar issues) “3 dogs”: Velia's dogs are always with her during morning walks, then stay inside the house or in their fence until night when they ALWAYS STAY INSIDE Velia’s house “dogs barked”: you heard the watchdogs of horse fence a couple of hundred meters far away from Collonzolo “ant”: a COUNTRY HOUSE is placed in the countryside. Products for any type of insects are in the room next to kitchen. You wouldn’t have had ant problem if you had thrown your garbage in the proper bins along the street (as clearly stated on house manual) instead of leaving junk on the BBQ just outside the kitchen! “fridge”: Fridge broke due to the high temperatures, apologize for the nuisance! Velia IMMEDIATELY bought new fridge when next guests reported the problem “BBQ”: if you didn’t use it as a garbage deposit.. “photographs aren't recent”: right, pictures taken in 2016 with old sofa covers (you found new red covers no dirty!) “chairs are very old”: some old chairs just for decor, table and benches with red pillows under pergola had been bought in 2016 “bathrooms were very dated”: I confirm, part of an ancient house, nothing different from the pictures on our website “shower heads”: they WORK! However the time is ripe for change them “main bathroom basic”: in fact it is described as a “separate WC” not a bathroom! “black mold”: I personally checked and I didn’t find black mold around the shower, just some limestone that has already been removed from the sinks, bidets, toilets, showers and from some surfaces near the them. “bedrooms has its own entrance": clearly stated on advert (On the second floor, with its own entrance, sits another bedroom with en-suite bathroom) “flagstones”: will check & repair if the case for sure! What about guest behaviour? -broken sun umbrella's pole found inside a bush -stocked woods found everywhere in garden -stones & coins in pool Take care!

lovely rustic house in a beautiful setting

  • 4 of 5

We ( 2 adults and 2 teenagers) spent a lovely week here in August 2015 .

The location was pretty remote and away from normal life, nearest shop a mile or two away and nearest restaurant 10 -15 miles away, so its a great place to stay if you want real rural Italian life.

It was great value for a house with a pooland and lots of space around for chilling, bbq-ing etc

The house itself was a bit dated and some of the rooms could do with modernising although in a funny way it added to its charm for us, others might not appreciate it though.

The highlights were the local horseriding centre centre (Fattoria)a couple of miles away which was absolutely brilliant , we all rode and our teenagers went off on a proper trek with galloping sections through the mountains/woodlands for a full day!!

The other highlight was Sienna , great for a real Italian day out and Radicondoli the closest town with a proper restaurant owned by the son of the house owner serving really really good italian food!!

Whe had a great holiday in this litle paradise

  • 4 of 5

We liked the property because it's so natural. Veglia who ownes the property is a very nice lady with a warm hart. She takes good care for the property, her guests, the animals and is very helpfull and understanding. We can recommend this property to all people who loves the silence, the nature and the tranquility. The village is quiet and peacefull and has a very nice playground for children. There are not much stores, buth you can find everything you need. The pizzeria La Pergola in Radicondoli that the owner reccomend is excellent. We did also like the pizzeria in Castelnuovo di val di Cecina.

Beautiful Country Setting

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful setting in Tuscany. We loved the house - a wonderful confluence of rustic and modern architecture. Sara (the owner) was awesome! She helped us plan our sight seeing and even mailed back a dress that we left behind! I would highly recommend the property to anyone seeking a quiet country setting in beautiful Tuscany. We visited Florence and nearby Siena as well as several other historic sights (Rome is about 3 1/2 hours away). As for food, you really can't go wrong; I can't recall a bad (or even average) meal - everything was delicious. The restaurant next to the pool was quite good.
