Living in our cottage gives you that real summer feeling. Lots of space outside to use anytime of the day as deck is on east and south side, patio and screen porch on the west. The house is comfortable, well furnished, and sunny. There is an easy walk, slightly down hill, to our sandy beach on Crystal Lake. As we have a joint ownership with two of our friends, living in the other two cottages, we share the beach. There is also a dock.
The Summer Assembly is just down the road has children's and adult theater productions, church choir and services, slide shows, dinners, and other social events.
Timber frame construction inside, with a two story living room and dining room, and huge stone wood burning fireplace, and large loft with a bedroom. It has a very warm, cozy, cottage feeling inside. There is also WiFi access throughout the cottage.
Fully equipped kitchen and laundry area. The house is also surrounded by decks and patios.
There are 2 twin beds in front bedroom with full bath with shower and tub. The middle bedroom has a double bed, with attached half bath. The master suite has a queen bed and full bath with shower and tub with grab handles. The second floor loft has one bedroom with 2 twin beds. There are new mattresses on all beds.
The den, by the front door, has books, games, HDTV, land line, desk, and a wonderful couch to curl up in and read for an afternoon.
There cottage has heaters for chilly mornings, and several fans for hot days.
Some of the favorite things to around Crystal Lake are visiting the town of Frankfort which has a new micro brewery, a variety of excellent restaurants, a retro A&W drive-in, and fresh/smoked local fish markets. Frankfort also features a beautiful public beach with pier and lighthouse, fishing charters, bike rentals, public library, and a local art gallery with lessons. Beulah, another small town, has boat and bike rentals, farmers market, the famous Cherry Hut, and antique shops. The area has several golf courses, bike trails that run along the south shore of the lake, and tennis courts in Frankfort. Farther afield is Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, river trips down the Platte and Betsie rivers, and the Honor Family Market which is stocked with fine wines, micro brews, and specialty foods.

My mother and I own the cottage, renting it for a couple of months every summer. In the off season, my husband and I enjoy the lake, biking trips, and lots of old friends
Cynthia Koster purchased this cottage in 1957
Our mother came up to Crystal Lake from St Louis in the early 1920's and we have been coming up here ever since. In 1952 my parents bought some land and built three grey log cottages. The largest, on the hill, is ours. The other two cottages are now part of Grey Logs Assoc. and owned by other people. We all love to swim, and thus visiting Crystal Lake every summer, the ultimate place to swim, was perfect
We also loved the camaraderie of belonging to the CSA, for tennis lessons, theater, church choir, dinners.
I have always loved swimming in the late afternoon at Crystal Lake. It is just magnificent. You might want to rent a small boat and row out into the middle and just relax, with a picnic lunch. Sitting on the beach and reading your favorite pulp fiction, while you sip on homemade lemonade is just the very best.
Our cottage is just a short drive to Frankfort for all basic supplies, and walking the long sandy beach on Lake Michigan. Within an hour, you can do all of the many adventures I have listed on my map. Please see photos, too.
Just wanted to let you know that we enjoyed our stay in the Bates Cottage!
Thank you! We appreciate the offer for extra time, but we needed to get home at a reasonable time Saturday
and get back to reality!
Loved this cabin. Family felt right at home the minute we stepped in the door. Tennis court no longer ok for tennis, however it was perfect for Frisbee every evening. The beach is a short walk down the drive from the cabin. Our boys loved the sand, however my wife hated the amount that returned to the cabin with us until we found the hose on the deck. The location was fantastic, Frankfort and Lake Michigan were literally 5 minutes away. Point Betsie lighthouse is two miles away and the Sleeping bear dunes were less than 30 minutes. As we sat on the beach every morning we were greated by many people walking, jogging and running.
The cottage has been upgraded since our stay in 2012, and is even more comfortable. There are new mattresses, the kitchen is now fully stocked and LR has a comfortable new sofa and chairs. The location is great, you hear birds (and no car noise) in the mornings, there is a deck that has both sun and shade, and there is a wonderful feeling of beauty and solitude. The beach is a only a few minutes down the driveway, easy for kids to go off and play, town is 10 minute trip for groceries, shopping, movies and wonderful restaurants. There are several river trips available in close proximity, along with Sleeping Bear, with steep cliffs, and wandering paths through the dunes.
My husband and I, our 2 young sons, and my parents spent a lovely week at the Bates Cottage. The home was very comfortable and it was wonderful to come "home" after a day at the beach or sightseeing and be able to make a home-cooked meal and relax. We loved Point Betsie and the pier/lighthouse in Frankfort. We made it to the Cherry Hut in Beulah--best cherry pie my mother has ever had :) We also really enjoyed the Granary in Beulah -- lots of local foods/wines to purchase as well as a flea market we didn't have nearly enough to time to get through--if you are lucky the shop across the way may even be open and offer you a peek at some vintage Chris Craft boats. We had a fun evening at the Cherry Bowl Drive-In -- they will even announce your presence before the movie starts if you want and the cars will honk in appreciation :) We were directed to a great Rock Shop (closer to Honor, but with a Beulah address) and were able to purchase a lovely Petoskey stone -- the state rock, I believe and very cool. Our boys enjoyed plenty of time at all the nearby beaches -- Crystal Lake, Frankfort, Point Betsie (if you want Lake rocks, bring your bucket -- they are plentiful here),& Glen Haven. Our most fun (and long) daytrip was to Mears - where we were able to go on Mac's Dune Buggy rides of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes -- it was about 2 hours from the cottage, but in our opinion it is NOT to be MISSED !! Beautiful views and such a fun ride (ask for Weasie !!) ! There are plenty of yummy ice cream shops -- Scoops downtown has hand-scooped Moomers ice cream (we recommend the almond delight or Very Cherry), or there is the Cremee stand in front of Glen's supermarket -- lemon custard ! The neighbors were friendly and helpful and Carolyn was extremely easy to work with -- she was very accessible before and during our stay. We hope to visit Bates Cottage again next year. Our boys are already working on their "to-do" lists !!
I have known the owner and family of this property since my teenage years in the 60's. I have never rented the cottage but I have been a frequent guest over the years. I would best describe the place as a classic "up north" lake cottage with modern amenities and beautifully landscaped grounds. The owner accurately describes (and photographs) the property inside and out.
The listing accurately describes the property on Crystal Lake but until actually staying there, the full beauty and peaceful surroundings can only be imagined! I had the wonderful privilege of spending several days in this cottage and found it to be so clean and comfortable, close to nearby attractions and many places to dine were within a few minutes drive. I was in awe of the beautiful gardens on the property and felt the love and care it had been given over many, many years by the owner. I would definitely recommend this cottage for a summer stay, and would very much like to return again.
It gets so dark at night that you can watch the stars and see if you can find the big dipper, orion, and caseopia.
