Great home base for exploring the Island!

  • 4 of 5

This property is a great location! We stayed for three weeks, making this our 'home base' for jaunts to Victoria, Nanaimo, Parksville, Rathtrevor, and others. The house is quaint and totally served our needs. A huge television for our Netflix binging in the evenings. A gorgeous property in an idyllic country setting, while still a five-minute drive into town for Starbucks. The owners were friendly and knowledgable about the area. We would definitely recommend this rental!

Lovely country living with modern amenities.

  • 4 of 5

The house is set in a valley surrounded by mountains and fields which makes for great views as you sit outside. The garden is landscaped and Full of wild flowers and lavender. It is also centrally located if you want to go sight seeing., hiking , biking etc...there are alpacas and donkeys on site. It is fun being able to feed them from the apples in the orchard which is also on the property.

The accommodations are comfortable and clean. Each window of the house has a view . We particularly liked the one from the kitchen and the one from the dining room. It was easy living with the benefits of being on a farmstead.

Do not miss going to Port Renfrew it is a great walk to the ocean on the western side of the island. Cowichan bay is not far and has great little restaurants on the port.

A Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

We spent five weeks at this cottage, just outside Duncan, B.C. If you're looking for luxury accommodation, go to a hotel, but if you want a spacious and comfortable, reasonably priced home-away-from-home this is the place for you and your family. We loved it. It's a rustic old farm house set on 11 acres. John and Victoria, our hosts, live next door, but there is an excellent sense of privacy here. Two bathrooms, a reasonably well-equipped kitchen (no dishwasher, but we were okay with that.) Two bedrooms, a high efficiency wood stove and baseboard heat. Good internet and TV for those rainy winter nights. It's furnished with an eclectic collection of cottage style furniture. Homey is how how it felt. Raffi and Pumpkin, the two donkeys provide the outside entertainment. They are a couple of characters and we got friendly with them and the small herd of Alpaacas. We made sure to have carrots on hand for some young visitors, family from Vancouver, who enjoyed feeding them carrots, through the fence. These are not pets, they are farm animals, not dangerous, but parental supervision is important here. There's a gorgeous view of Mt. Prevost out the large back windows. There's a small couch in the kitchen. At first we weren't sure why it was there, but now we totally get it. The perfect place to sit and watch the ever-changing sky. Victoria is a master gardener and while we were there, we watched the flowers begin to bloom. We were told that in the summer, the yard is a sight to behold. This is an excellent location, just outside the city of Duncan. It takes just a couple of minutes by car to get from this rural setting to grocery stores in and everything else in town and it's a short drive down to the Cowichan Bay and the other funky small communities on the ocean. You will need a car here. Don't hesitate to book this, but you'll have to get in line, because we're going back next year. Thanks to Victoria, John and Ella for the wonderful stay.

Had to resist the urge to move in ...

  • 5 of 5

My husband, daughter and I stayed here in April 2015. The cottage was comfortable enough to feel like home. It was spacious and homey, the beds were comfortable (super important for us) and the views from the kitchen/dining area were fabulous. Particularly enjoyed the animals. It felt very private even though Victoria and her family live in a house right next door. We will be back on our next trip to the coast.

Excellent accommodations and property, could be more accommodating!!

  • 3 of 5

Charming cottage in picturesque setting, great for pets and people alike. Donkeys and alpacas just add to the character, kids will love it!! Everything you could need and on the road to Lake Cowichan, just off the highway yet with a feeling of quiet and seclusion - except for the town of Duncan and other amenities are nearby. Perfect...

...except for a couple of oddities to be aware of in term of your expectations as a visitor here. Enjoy the electric baseboard heaters, but keep them at 10 degrees C even in winter, and prepare to be warned that the power meter was checked before you arrived. Use the wood burning stove freely with firewood included*, just beware the asterisk...hint that $8 at the local gas station will provide the same weight of extra wood bundle (you will need this on top of your assigned rations) as what the owner will ask $20 for. And even though you vacuum the whole place, strip beds and wipe down every surface, you may lose partial damage deposit if arbitrary and unclear standards on laundry and total garbage left at assigned receptacles are not met. And there is still a cleaning charge on top of that...?

Should be a 4.5 or 5, I hope the owner realizes people go on vacation to get away from stringent utility bills and other stresses - the rates were very reasonable before the adders, just set it where you need it to be the first time and let people enjoy themselves!! Really is a great place and was so odd as the owner was very friendly on the surface, just a lot of rules and regulations to be aware of if you want to stay here.

Wonderful escape from the city

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a 2 week stay at this wonderfully set and appointed cottage. We booked a year in advance after a work friend's high recommendation. We were not disappointed! The cottage is charmingly rustic yet has every modern amenity required for a comfortable stay with fully equipped kitchen, laundry, entertainment and wifi for your use. The owners are very warm and friendly and go about their animal/garden chores quietly in their adjacent property, making it easy to communicate any needs or to ask for any recommendations on local sightseeing etc. We enjoyed every chance to chat while relaxing in the back garden in between activities we had planned. We had beach days, lots of walks and exploring around local and further afield island areas including day visits to Victoria, Parksville and Nanaimo...all reasonably close car rides.

For us, honestly it was one our best vacations ever. Living far away from island and area family it was a joy to be able to invite family for dinners and host- something we have not been able to do from standard hotel rooms. While very hot days saw the West facing kitchen/dining area heat uncomfortably, it was only at late afternoon and bedroom and livingroom areas were much cooler with options of microwaving or bbq to avoid heating kitchen for those times.

Our teenage sons both really enjoyed their stay and were enthusiastic about returning for a future vacation. Our 10 month old puppy probably enjoyed his vacation the most, making friends with the family's small dog, and getting tons of walks in the bucolic countryside. Undeniably the best value for your vacationing dollar, our visiting family members loved the setting and thanked us for such a relaxing and pleasant time! We definitely plan to return and highly recommend staying if you are looking for a restful, enjoyable getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life.
