About Marina Wallace
I was born in Rome, live and work in London, and inherited Villa Il Cardinale from my parents three years ago. I am now looking after this wonderful property continuing the family tradition of hosting guests from all over the world with enthusiasm and in style. I WAS SELECTED AS AN EXEMPLARY OWNER BY HomeAway. We assist our guests with special attention and care.
Marina Wallace purchased this Villa in 1965
Why Marina Wallace chose Zona III Marcigliana
Villa il Cardinale is a very special residence, that makes its guests feel at home from the moment they walk in. It is very close to Rome, only 8 km from the centre, and yet it feels like a country house, with its beautiful gardens and its location at the bottom of a hill. The Villa has a rich history and my family have loved looking after it. It is very much a family home, with all comforts and a real soul. It is great to be able to share its beauty with our guests.
What makes this Villa unique
The ancient Roman ruins in the upper garden are truly special. The villa used to be the home of a Roman family in the 1st century AD. Its history is overwhelming and it will make you fall in love with the villa adding a special flavour to its other wonderful features. We have the full record of its history, and a fascinating archaeological report that is available to our guests. The Villa has also been used by artists as an inspirational residence. We are very attentive with our guests, establishing a personal contact with them and ensuring that we fulfil their special requests and ensure the perfect stay.

Amazing Roman historical villa
Amazing location, decoration and setting with great hosts! Simply perfect stay with the family!
Wonderful Stay
We stayed here for one week on a family vacation. We are a fairly demanding family when we travel and the property owner and staff tended to all of our needs and went out of their way to ensure that our stay was as enjoyable as it could be starting from home made pizza night to getting us reservations at some of Rome’s most coveted restaurants. We absolutely recommend this beautiful villa for anyone looking to stay in Rome.
Lovely Respite in Rome
Charming and beautiful historical country home on the outskirts of Rome. The only thing that is not perfect is its proximity to the ring-road (nearby highway), and distance from the center, but it is easy to forget as you explore the old formal rooms, have breakfast in the traditional kitchen, and discover one-by-one all the different gardens, lawns, and terraces. A highlight was a quiet snooze by the pool with hillside breezes coming in from the ocean after a day of crowds and heat in the center of Rome. Our bedroom had beautiful sheets and a great mattress, plus air conditioning, making for the best nights of sleep on our whole European tour. The proprietress, Marina, and her team of care-takers are constantly working to improve the property, which was her family home when she was growing up. Marina is an excellent hostess, helping with booking taxis and making recommendations for things to do and see. Next time we go we will use the local train (from Sette Bagne) to get into town to cut down on taxi fees, and we will bring friends to help fill the beautiful house.
Midsummers Night Roman Dream
Villa Il Cardinale’s magical
position on a hill outside the centre of Rome is the perfect setting for a step back in time. The rose- pink Villa is more than a home, it is a treasure full of loved objects, books, photographs and paintings. Perfect for lovers of history, Art, gardens , fresh lemons and, of course, for lovers, new and old.
We had our marriage blessing in the garden surrounded by family and friends and it felt both intimate and public with olive and lemon trees, a Roman Font and 2nd century wall as silent witnesses.
Marina and her team were unobtrusive and helpful and we cannot thank you enough. It was beyond expectations.
Dear Caroline and Matthew,
your beautiful event at Villa il Cardinale was very special indeed. We loved having you and your guests, your lovely family and we were thrilled that all went so well. It was a wonderful, warm, meaningful and very enjoyable event, skilfully orchestrated with so much creativity on your part, and you filled the house with joy and a loving presence. Thank you for choosing to have your marriage blessing at Villa il Cardinale! Marina
Wonderful stay at Villa il Cardinale
We had a wonderful 5 days staying aWe had a wonderful 4 days staying at Villa Calli! We were a family of 8 (my wife and I, our adult, children, their partners and friends). We were a family of 8 (my wife and I, our adult, children, their partners and friends). It was the perfect location for us on a hill abut 20-25 mins from the centre of Rome by car. The Villa has old world Rome charm it contains an exotic mix of elements from the splendour of Italian glass chandeliers to original ancient Roman columns and other antiquities, it is a microcosm of history. Overall the ambience of the villa reflected the city and we loved it. It is built into a hill with surrounding terrace gardens with lots of places to meet, eat or relax. The roaming garden spaces also meant everyone could find a private place when they wanted to. We loved the bedrooms with private balconies and the newly installed air conditioning which made sleeping very comfortable. It also has two (one indoor and one outdoor) yoga spaces with mats and we had our brood doing morning yoga just for fun because the tools were there. The villa has a small open-air pool which was terrific to plunge into after a hot day’s sightseeing in Rome. It also has wood fired pizza oven and on the evening of our arrival our host Marina organized a a professional pizza maker to come and cook the pizza. We all joined in creating our own wonderful pizzas! Despite the Villa’s peripheral location, the train system is really good (if slow) and a taxi for 6 from central Rome to the villa is ~€25 which worked for us as we did not have a car. The Ristorante Bel Poggio is a 2 minute walk from the villa is a good option if you don’t want to cook.
Our host Marina also took care of every detail before our arrival (airport transfers etc.) and could not have been more helpful. Marina also arrange for Stefania, the housekeeper to come in every morning to prepare breakfast and make up the bedrooms. Stefania was a joy, she looked after us extremely well and was always smiling, it is hard to imagine how she could have been more pleasant and helpful and I highly recommend her to you. We had a memorable time at Villa Calli and will return in the years to come.
Many thanks for choosing to stay with your family at Villa il Cardinale . We are delighted that you will return and very much look forward to hosting you again.
All the very best

Villa Il Cardinale
The house is seeped in history, with substantial traces of Roman baths in the house and extensive gardens. Set on a verdant hill, it has a highly individual character and has been updated with great tact. Assisted by the attentive owner, the visitor is guaranteed a truly memorable experience.
Map
Villa Il Cardinale is located right by a green hill, Bel Poggio, off Via Salaria, North of Rome, exit 9 when driving towards Roma from the motorway or form the airports.
The centre of Rome is only 8 Km away, and the nearest train stations, Settebagni and Saxa Rubra, are only 5 minutes drive. It is possible to park the car by the stations and take the train to the centre of Rome, Piazzale Flaminio, or to one of the main stations in Rome, Stazione Tiburtina. The Villa is situated opposite an excellent restaurant, Ristorante Bel Poggio, that can also cater for our guests at the Villa.
Up the hill there is a lovely walk and a very good pizzeria/ restaurant.
The ring road, the GRA, is very close to the the Villa, making it possible to travel to other sites outside Rome without entering the city and thus avoiding the urban traffic. There is a large shopping centre, Porta di Roma, 10 minuets drive from the Villa. The closest inhabited area is called Settebagni (it takes its name from the Seven Cisterns, Sette Bagni, that used to provide water for the gardens of Villa Il Cardinale in the 1st Century AD!) is 5 minutes drive away, and it has groceries, a pharmacy, a church, a doctor's surgery, an optician, a dentist, a patisserie, a newsagent, a great supermarket, and small shops for all daily necessities.
