pros and cons but the cons won :-(

  • 3 of 5

The pros: This is actually a very attractive little place in a lovely quiet neighborhood, with a comfy king-sized bed, an easy Uber ride to the Smithsonian, etc -- and the apartment is clean and neat.

The cons made our stay frustrating:

-- The shower faucet would spin around 360 degrees. We had the option of tepid or scalding, and very weak stream.

-- It had frequently slow to non-existent internet and tv connections. This was a research/working trip, not a vacation, so internet was CRUCIAL to us, as we'd told our hosts in our initial contact.

-- Because this was a working trip, we'd planned to cook and eat in. The kitchen is perfect -- but the cookware is deplorable and the bare minimum. I had to go out to buy my own measuring cups, oven mitts, basic staples, etc.

-- There is a nice desk area in the bedroom -- with no lighting. There is one overhead light in the bedroom which is insufficient.

-- The furniture is not as pictured. The armchair is gone, and we WISH that nice couch were there but it's been replaced by a very uncomfortable futon. The nice rug has been replaced by a stained, seedy-looking one. The bottom of one of the bathroom drawers is also missing, rendering it useless.

-- While the area is quiet, the upstairs neighbors aren't -- they must have a toddler, as the running little footsteps are VERY loud, and non-stop. We have 10 grandkids and we've never heard a child run this much -- hours non-stop every evening from around 5 to 9 pm and then again at 6 am each morning. Obviously the managers can't help this, and we chuckled over the kid's energy, but it was still surprisingly loud.

I did contact the owners about our internet concerns and they immediately contacted Comcast, who said there was no problem. There was. We didn't contact them a second time about our other concerns -- they were VERY nice and I suspect had we done so, they might have tried to correct at least some of these issues. We were just too busy working to have to follow through on property issues. It's clear they manage several properties and frankly, the place seems undermanaged and ill-maintained (except for the cleanliness, which was excellent.)

All said, if you're coming on a pleasure trip, planning to eat out, and the managers make a few small additions/repairs, it would be a very nice stay. It just needs a little attention, and if the shower and internet situations were corrected, we'd stay again!

Clean, comfortable, great neighborhood

  • 4 of 5

I consider myself very fortunate to have found this rental. It was close enough to catch the metro and to eat at some great restaurants/bars (I suggest you look up Harold Black speakeasy in the Eastern Market area). The only downfalls of this rental were: weaker shower head water pressure, sometimes a poor quality of cable tv picture (that's more of the cable company's fault than the rental....and we weren't really there to watch tv anyway), and lastly, the lock holding the key was super tricky to open....but after speaking with Cliff, we found out that they had changed the entryway to a keypad.....so no key needed! Thank you again for hosting us!

Disappointed - Not like the pictures and not low security

  • 1 of 5

Found the door open 2 times and the only feedback from the host was a phone call and SMS message suggesting that it might be occasionally happened.

Into the apartment, low lights, missing light spots and too noisy.

The street and nearby area is almost empty.

Don't let the pictures turn your decision; think twice.

Exactly what we needed as a small family with a baby. Great location near metro and the capitol mall

  • 5 of 5

Awesome experience!! Location is close enough to walk to the metro or even to the Capitol Mall. Was nice to have a comfortable bed, laundry access and even a place to cook for a night in to save some money. Owner was easily accessible as well and he even checked in with us which was really appreciated.

Capital Hill Basement - Close to Eastern Market

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed our stay in this rental. It was a good location, a decent uber ride to majority of DC areas and close to the Eastern Market terminal (not a terrible walk to Union Station either.) One thing to note, is there was no coffee provided (a coffee pot & mugs are provided, so you just have to bring the coffee.) There is a small convenient store within 2-3 blocks from the unit if needed. Overall, we had a great time in DC and we would definitely stay here again!
