About Michael Ray

My husband and I love to travel and stay in unique homes. When we were looking for a home to offer as a vacation rental we knew immediately this home would be perfect. There isn't another home like it, anywhere. It has a fantastic location in the center of the wine country, is very private and is surrounded by beautiful views and landscaping.

Michael Ray purchased this house in 2011

Why Michael Ray chose Sonoma County

We love Sebastopol. It's rural, but it's 15 minutes close to everything any big city has to offer and it's only an hour drive into San Francisco. People are friendly, open and accepting and the tasting rooms are relaxed and uncrowded.

What makes this house unique

This home is like no other home. When you drive through the front gate it gives you the feel of arriving at a castle. There is an open floor plan, great for a large or small family, with three bedrooms (king, king, queen, a den/bedroom with a full and a full futon in the large recreation room). You can barbecue out on the deck while dipping in and out of the hot tub ~ or talking to those inside watching TV on the flat screen.

Beautiful house with plenty of room.

  • 5 of 5

I booked this property to be central to Napa valley and Sonoma and this was the perfect place. 8/10 guests can easily sleep comfortably with plenty of room. The house is as unique as can be with a pool table, plenty of patio space and lots of privacy. I would highly recommend staying at this house if you get the opportunity. It's about a 45 min drive to either Sonoma or Napa, and you are in the heart of the Russian River Valley (another [possibly] lesser known but very good growing region).

Peaceful & accomadating.

  • 4 of 5

The Castle House was very accomadating for our family gathering. Plenty of room, kitchen was great for cooking and gathering, & the living room & outside deck provided plenty of seating. The game room was great fun & lots of room and the "tunnel" leading in was a hit. The king suite above the game room does not have a shower in the bathroom & could use a major cleaning to rid of musty smell. Most of the bed & bath linens & pillows could use a upgrade & also a detailing on cleaning, both inside & out. We had lots of fun around my daughters wedding week with coastal day trips, wine tasting close by, hiking & sweet walks in the neighborhood. Overall a wonderful place to stay but accommodations a bit fatigued.

Quiet and Peaceful

  • 4 of 5

The home is pretty, very quiet and peaceful. The home has many amenities: Game room with pool table, comfortable beds, hot tub, washer/dryer and well stocked kitchen. It is close to all areas in Sonoma and Napa counties. Easy to get around the area. The vineyards are picturesque and it never rains in California!!!

Perfect Long Weekend

  • 5 of 5

We have finally found our place! Every year we take a boys weekend and every year we look a new place, until now. This place was perfect for our needs , it is relaxing, clean, well stocked and fun..

But most importantly it was the friendliness of the owner, the easy check in and check out, and all the wonderful tips and recommendations. What we are looking for is a stress free, conveniently located, interesting rental once a year, and we have found it. Thank you.

Amazing castle house

  • 5 of 5

Unique home set in among beautiful redwood trees and landscaping. The large deck off the living room was a wonderful place to sit in the morning drinking coffee or in the evening drinking wine. The area in back of the home is wooded and private and we enjoyed watching the wild turkeys and quail. The home is large enough so our family of eight (four married couples) had plenty of room and the kitchen had plenty of space to prepare, and room to sit, when we prepared a family meal. The full size washer and dryer, well stocked kitchen, large gas grill and hot tub, made our week long stay very convenient and enjoyable. Michael, the owner, met us at the house when we arrived, and gave us all the information as well as history of the house and property. He was very friendly and helpful about the areas amenities, including stores, restaurants and wineries .Michael lives nearby which is a bonus if you have any problems or concerns (we did not). We look forward to staying here in the future! Tom K. Madison WI.

Unique home with family friendly amenities

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the Castle House and Michael was a wonderful host! He spent about an hour providing us with details about the home as well as great places to visit and dine locally during our stay. We had 5 children with us ages 9-16. The game room was a great hit! We mainly used the home in the late evening and morning before leaving on our adventures. The home is about 1:20 WITHOUT traffic from the SF airport. During rush hour it takes 2-3 hours! So plan accordingly :). Places we visited and a good adventure with kids are: Badega Bay (1/2 hour drive), Armstrong Woods (1 hour drive), rented bikes near Golden Gate Park and rode over the bridge to Sausalito (rented for 3 hours), SF double decker bus (hop on, hop off), Alcatraz and Angel Island (plan ahead and purchase tickets up to 90 days before arrival). These were all fun family adventures. We did take the kids to Sterling Vineyard for a tour. While this was an ok day, the kids weren't really into it. We really appreciated the washer and dryer during our stay.....we all used carry-on for a week's stay to avoid delays with checking bags.

Castle House was a great fit for our large group with kids. It was clean and well maintained.

Owner's Response: Nikki, Thank you for the very nice review and for the very valuable site seeing information for future guests and for leaving the Castle House in such good condition. I noticed it took you an hour to get to Armstrong Redwoods Park. Mapquest shows it as a 13.7 mile drive taking 22 minutes (which has been our experience driving it). Is it possible you took the Bodega Bay/Highway 1 coastal loop or maybe stopped at the Korbel Winery, which you go by on the most direct route, for some champagne tasting? Michael and Kristin

Bocci ball is at many near by wineries! The Russian River is less than 3 miles away with kayaking rentals at Burkes, tubing and sunning! Bodega Bay (Pacific Ocean) is only 25 minutes away

Notes:
6050 Vine Hill School Road is within walking distance to Martin Ray Winery as well as within bicycling distance to DeLoach, Sunce, and Hook and Ladder wineries; Our home is very private and looks out at vineyards to the south, pastures and mountains to the west and is surrounded by other large properties. It is very private and offers lots of opportunities for great walks by the vineyards (you might even catch a glimpse of the nesting bald eagles), beautiful drives on Dry Creek Road and West Side Road, easy access to Bodega Bay, excellent restaurants, music venues and art. Shopping is an experience in downtown Sebastopol, Healdsburg and Geyserville which are all within a 20 minute drive. Its a beautiful place, serene, quiet and very unique.
