About Michael Ray
My husband and I love to travel and stay in unique homes. When we were looking for a home to offer as a vacation rental we knew immediately this home would be perfect. There isn't another home like it, anywhere. It has a fantastic location in the center of the wine country, is very private and is surrounded by beautiful views and landscaping.
Michael Ray purchased this House in 2011
Why Michael Ray chose Sebastopol
We love Sebastopol. It's rural, but it's 15 minutes close to everything any big city has to offer and it's only an hour drive into San Francisco. People are friendly, open and accepting and the tasting rooms are relaxed and uncrowded.
What makes this House unique
This home is like no other home. When you drive through the front gate it gives you the feel of arriving at a castle. There is an open floor plan, great for a large or small family, with three bedrooms (king, king, queen, a den/bedroom with a full size bed and a large recreation room). You can barbecue out on the deck while dipping in and out of the hot tub ~ or talking to those inside watching TV on the flat screen.

Great, unique property in wine country!
We had a great time at this castle property! Great pool room space for groups to hang out. Bedrooms and bathrooms are nice. Kitchen is a good size and with nice appliance upgrades. Great out door porch area. Hot tub was nice to have and no issues with function. Great spot to explore Sonoma wine country from! Highly recommend! We were 2 families with 3 generations and we all had a great time!
The perfect location for laughter and fun!
This castle made us feel like we were staying on a movie set!
Michael and Kristin have renovated the castle and attached game room/bedroom tower beautifully.
There is enough room for 2 people to sleep in each of the 3 bedrooms in the main house, and then another 2 people can comfortably venture over to the "tower bedroom" for a heavenly rest in one of the most comfortable beds I've ever experienced.
Michael is informative and attentive, giving us a detailed history of the property and providing great recommendations for where to taste wine. He was quick to reply to any additional questions we had during our stay.
We loved staying at The Castle House and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a magical and comfortable home base while experiencing wine country!
Beautiful unique property
Over all good stay. The house was very cold and the heaters didn't work very well. The hot tub was only luke warm and had a brown film on the top, it was kind of gross. We had a group of 8 and had a lot of fun over all.
We were happy to hear that, in spite of the problems you encountered, you had a good time at the Castle House. Your review was the first 3 star review we have received in the six years (and over 2,500 guests) since we have opened the Castle House to visitors and we were very sorry you didn't have a 5 star stay. When I gave you the tour of the house, at check-in, I encouraged you, as I do with all of our guests, to contact us immediately if you encountered any problems or had any questions. You stayed a full week and the first we heard of your issues was when we read your review. Had you called, we would have been able to get things working correctly in just a few minutes. The spa just needed more "metal out" to eliminate the rust color residue that occasionally turns up when fresh water is added. The rust buildup in the water actually clogged the filter with iron residue and kept the heater from heating the spa. It only took a few minutes to add a bit of additive and hose off the filter to get the spa heater working perfectly. Since we couldn't find any issues when we tested the heating system, I contacted the guests before you and after you to ask if they experienced any problems with heating. They all reported no issues and loved their stay at the Castle House (as you can see by the subsequent 5 star reviews).
We hope, on your next visit, you give us an opportunity to provide you with a great stay in the wine country. Michael and Kristin
Fun house with an amazing history
We had a great weekend away from SF at this very unique property! Michael was a wonderful, thoughtful host and gave us a great history of the property and tips on local wineries. Thanks for the hospitality - we will be back!
Great family holiday
We loved the location and the redwoods around the house. The open plan kitchen, dining and sitting room was great for meal times. The bathroom in the bedroom above the game room has a very low combed ceiling and a very low toilet seat...one must be very careful not to hit ones head on the doorway or ceiling of the bathroom (hobbits might be able to stand upright). The shower and bath are both in the main house. There is no shower upstairs.
The hot tub and garden were perfect for us between our trips to the Armstrong Redwoods, Bodega Bay and the surrounding areas. The children loved the house and did not want to leave.
We would definitely rent this house again. It met the needs of 7 family members, of varying ages, nicely.
Thank you for the great review. It was fun to have guests visiting from Scotland. I have started calling the unique upstairs bathroom the "Hobbit" bath. That bath is in addition to the two large full baths in the main section of the house. While there is a sloped ceiling and a lower toilet (the toilet height is actually at the low end of the "normal" height range and only one inch lower than most standard toilets), I am not sure what a "combed ceiling" is. Is that a Scottish term? Since your review, in which you referred to the other baths and showers in a singular tense, we have been receiving many calls of concern about the bathrooms in the main section of the house. Just to clarify, there are two full baths (one with a tub shower and the master with a large, custom, tiled circular shower) in the main house and a 1/2 bath off the upstairs bedroom in two story section. Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you again, you were fun guest to meet and you left the house in great condition.

We had a girls weekend and Loved It! The castle is unique and fun with plenty of space. Michael was an awesome host and he provides discounts for tastings at the local wineries. But the best part was game room and secret passage with a history provided by Michael. I recommend it and would stay there again!!
Bocci ball is at many near by wineries! The Russian River is less than 3 miles away with kayaking rentals at Burkes, tubing and sunning! Bodega Bay (Pacific Ocean) is only 25 minutes away
