I grew up spending summers on Torch Lake around the corner from Clam Lake. My family moved fulltime to Petoskey in 1985. I have always loved the chain-of-lakes for the natural beauty and recreational opportunities.
Mike Lambert purchased this cabin in 1988
The cabin's privacy and location on Clam Lake made it an opportunity too good to pass up. I intend to pass on the property to my children.
The cottage was built in the 1950s by a company known for building cottages with character in the area. I was drawn by the wood paneling, screened porch and covered boat slip.
I am writing this review to let future renters be advised of the condition of this home.According to the pictures, our family believed we were renting a sanitary nice place for the week. When we arrived,we were very surprised. The home was very dirty. The floors were filthy, there were spider webs between the glass windows and screens and the windows were very dirty. We found dead bugs & flies in the refrigerator,a lg cluster of hair on the shower drain, spider webs with spiders in the corners of the ceilings in the bedrms, there was old hard dog stool in one of the bedrms. The odor in the home was very strong of urine. The blanket covering the couch had urine stains on it as so did the chairs. We also saw many " wood" cochroaches in the house. We had contacted the owner and informed him of this,He acted surprised and had come to the home and stated he had someone clean it and apologized. After a long discussion with my family on what we should do,we decided to just clean it and make the best of it as there were no other places available to rent.My husband made the 2 1/2 hr trip home to get fans to blow out the strong smell of urine, cleaning supplies & our pop up camper. Our young grandkids were to arrive in 2 days and we did not want them staying in the house,so we set up our camper for my daughters family. It took us 2 days to clean the house to make it "stayable".This home does sit on a very nice piece of property with a beautiful view of clam lake. There was a mouse that would hang out just outside the door who would not budge and was not afraid of people. The owner was nice and would come by his shop that sat next door daily. He left us doughnuts one morning. It would of been nice if he would of offered compensation for the time lost cleaning.Clam lake is a beautiful lake .We had gd weather & spent most of our time outside and ended up having a great time.
Overall our stay was good. The owner was very nice and helpful. Because the weather was very warm it made it somewhat uncomfortable without air conditioning. This was my fault for not inquiring before hand and no one would expect it to be almost 90% at the end of August and early in September. The boat dock was great and Mike gave us access to the pontoon boat at a great price, no charge.
Thank you Mike!
I liked the place much roomier then next door, easy to find, kept up well and clean, great acess to Torch Lake by boat, will stay there again.
We have vacationed on Clam Lake for over two decades and have enjoyed our stays in this cabin most of all. Very peaceful location, close to Torch and Bellaire Lakes. Good boating with plenty to see. Very natural Grass river minutes away with good fishing! Great family location. The Dockside is always fun, Dewitt Marine and Butch's are just down the road.
The cabin is a great place to get away and relax. We brought our boat and enjoyed the boat house, fire pit, cabin and close proximity to Torch Lake. There are plenty of opportunities to explore the lakes. We took a few rides down the Torch River and into Elk Lake too. Dinner at Dockside is always a must as part of the trip. The owner is very friendly and is at the property daily. Our only suggestion is that it would be appreciated if he didn't make his visit in the early morning. We were often woken up due to noises and talking in the yard. Overall, it was a great trip. We even made friends with the guests staying at the resort next door which added to our entertainment for the week. Bellair is a great little town and we also recommend breakfast at the Lunch Box. We truly enjoyed our stay at the property and recommend it for anyone.
The property is in a scenic area on a chain-of-lakes 67 miles long. Clam Lake runs into Torch Lake which National Geographic named the 3rd most beautiful lake in the world! Clam Lake also runs into the Grass River Nature Preserve - a beautiful preserve including the river and a large protected section of land which fronts on the river and has great walking trails! The preserve has an education center and offers terrific nature programs for all ages. It is handicap accessible.
The area is full of old growth trees which give you a sense of peace and tranquility. The trees are beautiful all year but in each season the landscape changes into fall colors, winter snow, spring wildflowers, and summer shade. The cabin's location is also surprisingly near sensational golf and ski resorts, gambling casinos with headliner entertainment, the small towns of Bellaire and Alden, the nearby cities of Traverse, Charlevoix, Petoskey, Harbor Springs. There are shops filled with one-of-a-kind pieces and ready for you from the budget shopper on up! Dining in the area is terrific: lots of great restaurants from ice cream parlors to 4 star gourmet cuisine. Every visitor will be very happy they came. Something wonderful for the young and not so young, casual or intense fitness, and land-lubber or water enthusiast. Families return year after year, generation after generation to this rare and beautiful area. Kayaks and pontoon boat available. Inquire about rates for pontoon boat.
