Southeast Michigan Cottage Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

NEW for 2016: Professionally tarped and sanded swim area with seawall ledge and steps. Perfect swim and play area for all ages. As well as a new gas grill.

Historic waterfront cottage known as 'Tumble Down' with stunning sunsets. Originally built in 1923 by a well known gentleman who built many field stone cottages in the area, several of which are on West Crooked Lake. Tumble Down is located on low boat traffic, West Crooked Lake with water access to East Crooked Lake. Both are all sports lakes. Relax and barbecue on your private deck overlooking the lake, swing on the porch swing, enjoy the hot tub or roast marshmallows over the campfire. Sunbathing on the shore, deck or dock. Paddle around the lake in the 16' canoe, pair of kayaks, pair of ATX Stand Up Paddle Boards or the paddle boat all provided, bring your own boat or rent our pontoon boat for $150 per day (gas included). Boat launch 1/2 mile away. Great fishing. Property has extensive gardens and was featured on the LACASA garden tour in 2010. Be sure to explore the secret gnome garden and courtyard with fountain.

Tumble Down has much to offer year round. Enjoy foliage color in the fall, cross-country skiing and ice fishing in the winter. We look forward to sharing our slice of paradise with you.

About Melisa Burnett

We love to travel, spend time with friends and family, garden, enjoy good food and wine, host parties, and of course spend time on our lake!

Melisa Burnett purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Melisa Burnett chose Southeast Michigan

We have lived in this community for almost 20 years. Living on West Crooked Lake is like living 'on vacation' all of the time. We looked at every lake in Brighton and settled on West Crooked Lake based on sunsets, quality of water, visual interest, boat traffic, wildlife and quality of residence development.

What makes this cottage unique

We love watching the circle of life on our lake year round. We have multiple bird families that make West Crooked Lake their home; Multiple Swan families, Canada Geese, Wood Ducks, Blue Herons, Egrets, Sandhill Cranes, Hawks, a pair of Morning Doves that nest in our garden and a mischievous Muskrat that lives in our neighbor's wood pile.

WE LOVE THE TUMBLEDOWN!!

  • 5 of 5

We visited the Tumbledown recently and loved it! This place has so much to offer! Loved that the upper floor had a large deck and lower level had a great private patio. We spent mornings having coffee on the patio swing listening to the birds and watching the sun come over the house and light up the lake. Evenings were spent watching the sunset from the deck enjoying a glass of wine and a board game. Truly a beautiful setting.

The decor in the cottage was outstanding! You can tell there was a lot of thought and effort put into furnishing and decorating the cottage. Fealt like a private mountain retreat but right on the lake.

Owners just put in a sandy beach area which was great for the kids. The adults loved it as well as we spent the days submerged in the shallow water staying cool.

We also enjoyed paddle boating around the lake and the private islands checking out all the activity on the lake.

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The owners were very hospitable and accommodating. The cottage has everything you need for a fun and relaxing escape to the lake. We will definitely be back!

RENTERS BEWARE!!

  • 1 of 5

If you are looking for a peaceful, private, lakefront cottage to rent with your family, keep looking. This property is misrepresented online. The photos portray Tumble Down “Cottage” to be a private getaway on a gorgeous lake with a private dock, fire pit, hot tub…and these amenities are all available if you’d like to share them with the owner, their 3 sons, and their guests. That’s right, though the “cottage” has a private entrance, it is attached to the home the property owner lives in. Not only is the website deceiving, the homeowner never mentioned once in our 30+ emails that she lived in the house and that we’d be sharing it with her family. This was a gross misrepresentation of what we signed up for since the shared situation was not mentioned on the website or in the communication. We have used VRBO many times. This is the first time that we felt deceived.

We know that when vacationing on a lake, homes are built close together. Close neighbors was not the issue. We expected that “private” meant “not shared with other people living on the property” and we expected that our family would be the only ones using the spaces advertised. Our “private” firepit was a shared space with the homeowners and littered with a bunch of beer cans. Our “private” hot tub was on the homeowner’s patio, directly outside of their living area. If we’d used it, we would’ve had to walk upstairs and onto their deck. The “private” dock in the photo was anything but. The “private” deck overlooking the lake was directly below the homeowner’s deck. The overgrown plants on the steps made it difficult for our small kids to get around. Upon arrival, the homeowner told us they’d be having a party that night where she said that “things would get crazy” with lots of people using the stairs directly next to our patio and the small grassy area near the lake would be crowded. What!!?? Absolutely zero privacy.

We did lots of research well in advance to rent a lakefront property with our family. The discrepancy between the photos and reality is dumbfounding. We left within an hour of arriving. If the homeowner had even hinted at the fact that the “cottage” was attached to their home where they live, we never would have considered renting. Had we stayed, we would’ve been vacationing in a total stranger’s home with them and their guests. If you’re looking for a getaway with some peace and relaxation, keep looking.

Perfect Vacation Getaway

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a unique vacation setting that is rustic yet has all of the interior comforts you would want, a covered porch with the most relaxing seating as well as breathtaking views and lush landscaping surrounding you, then Tumble Down cottage is the perfect choice. The owners are very responsive and accommodating, and will do whatever they can to make your stay a positive and memorable experience. You'll need to be able to walk down a number of natural stone steps to get to this little paradise so plan accordingly, but once you arrive you'll see why it is so highly recommended. Whether you want to stay at the cottage, prepare your own meals and enjoy the extras offered at Tumble Down, or venture into the surrounding towns (Brighton is the closest, just a short drive, and there are zillions of places to eat) to experience the local culture, you'll find there is something for everyone to enjoy. I entertained my family and friends at the cottage just about every day, as they live locally, and they all couldn't wait to come back to the gorgeous views, hot tub and relaxing atmosphere. I highly recommend Tumble Down cottage and would not hesitate to book my vacation there again.

Truly NOT blissful!

  • 2 of 5

It was OK. The owners are pleasant and the cottage was clean. However, we did not feel like we were alone....three teenage sons around all week! I woke to voices of kids in hot tub right outside of bedroom late one night and four friends of owners taking tour of property while we were having morning coffee in pajamas. Our gas grill did not work therefore, we had to use owners which was a major inconvenience! We felt the added costs for additional lake toys was a bit high as well! As beautiful as the views are I must say that the 45 stairs up and down were a bit much... especially when carrying luggage and groceries....so hope you are in good health!

Romantic Weekend Away

  • 5 of 5

We celebrated our 1st Wedding Anniversary in October at the cottage and it was the perfect location to get away as a couple. Melisa & Roger were available if needed, but we essentially felt like we had the whole lake to ourselves. We were fortunate with amazing weather & the scenery is simply gorgeous in the fall. Cozy little place to escape reality! Hope to visit in the summer eventually. Thanks for making our anniversary as memorable as the wedding day!

Idyllic Lake House

  • 5 of 5

This rental experience was perfect as the weather we had when we got there. The communication beforehand/during/after was excellent. The cabin had everything we needed. The outdoor space (including pier, fire pit, hot tub, pontoon rental) were awesome! Melisa and Roger were excellent hosts: they went above-and-beyond preparing a part of the property for a special event and were also available if we needed anything while never being overbearing. My only hesitancy in giving this rental five-stars is that we plan to go back next summer and I don't want it to be fully booked!!!
