Historic waterfront cottage known as 'Tumble Down' with stunning sunsets. Originally built in 1923 by a well known gentleman who built many field stone cottages in the area, several of which are on West Crooked Lake. Tumble Down is located on low boat traffic, West Crooked Lake with water access to East Crooked Lake. Both are all sports lakes. Relax and barbecue on your private deck overlooking the lake, swing on the porch swing, enjoy the hot tub or roast marshmallows over the campfire. Sunbathing on the shore, deck or dock. Paddle around the lake in the 16' canoe, pair of kayaks, pair of ATX Stand Up Paddle Boards or the paddle boat all provided, bring your own boat or rent our pontoon boat for $150 per day (gas included). Boat launch 1/2 mile away. Great fishing. Property has extensive gardens and was featured on the LACASA garden tour in 2010. Be sure to explore the secret gnome garden and courtyard with fountain.
Tumble Down has much to offer year round. Enjoy foliage color in the fall, cross-country skiing and ice fishing in the winter. We look forward to sharing our slice of paradise with you.

We love to travel, spend time with friends and family, garden, enjoy good food and wine, host parties, and of course spend time on our lake!
Melisa Burnett purchased this cottage in 2005
We have lived in this community for almost 20 years. Living on West Crooked Lake is like living 'on vacation' all of the time. We looked at every lake in Brighton and settled on West Crooked Lake based on sunsets, quality of water, visual interest, boat traffic, wildlife and quality of residence development.
We love watching the circle of life on our lake year round. We have multiple bird families that make West Crooked Lake their home; Multiple Swan families, Canada Geese, Wood Ducks, Blue Herons, Egrets, Sandhill Cranes, Hawks, a pair of Morning Doves that nest in our garden and a mischievous Muskrat that lives in our neighbor's wood pile.
For our wedding weekend we chose to rent a house for the rehearsal dinner Friday and for getting ready on Saturday morning. We rented the upper deck for the rehearsal dinner, and it had a beautiful view of the lake and a lot of seating for all the guests. On Saturday morning we had our hair and makeup stylists come to the house to get all the girls ready, and some of the other wedding party members hung around and drank coffee and ate doughnuts. We took first-look photos on the second floor which had great lighting. Overall we really enjoyed our stay! The only negatives were that It was a bit smaller than we expected and there were a ton of stairs up and down, but it was super cute and made our wedding weekend perfect :)
We had a great time. The photos were very accurate and the setting was just lovely. My family used the supplemental water toys (2 kayaks, 2 paddleboards and paddleboat) every day. The hosts were very accessible but the stay remained very private. Melissa provided us pie filling and powdered sugar so we could experience hobo pies over the fire pit, which were great. I would highly recommend this rental. Ron B.
We had a wonderful vacation experience at Tumble Down cottage. The access to the lake (you are within steps of the water) was marvelous! We really enjoyed paddle boarding, kayaking and playing in the water - the weather was 85-90 all week and we took advantage of the lake! Everything you need is provided in the cottage - just buy your groceries and you are all set for the week. We grilled out everyday and had bonfires at night. The Hot Tub was incredible - best view of the lake day or night as you sip your favorite beverage! WE WILL BE BACK!
We visited the Tumbledown recently and loved it! This place has so much to offer! Loved that the upper floor had a large deck and lower level had a great private patio. We spent mornings having coffee on the patio swing listening to the birds and watching the sun come over the house and light up the lake. Evenings were spent watching the sunset from the deck enjoying a glass of wine and a board game. Truly a beautiful setting.
The decor in the cottage was outstanding! You can tell there was a lot of thought and effort put into furnishing and decorating the cottage. Fealt like a private mountain retreat but right on the lake.
Owners just put in a sandy beach area which was great for the kids. The adults loved it as well as we spent the days submerged in the shallow water staying cool.
We also enjoyed paddle boating around the lake and the private islands checking out all the activity on the lake.
All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The owners were very hospitable and accommodating. The cottage has everything you need for a fun and relaxing escape to the lake. We will definitely be back!
If you are looking for a peaceful, private, lakefront cottage to rent with your family, keep looking. This property is misrepresented online. The photos portray Tumble Down “Cottage” to be a private getaway on a gorgeous lake with a private dock, fire pit, hot tub…and these amenities are all available if you’d like to share them with the owner, their 3 sons, and their guests. That’s right, though the “cottage” has a private entrance, it is attached to the home the property owner lives in. Not only is the website deceiving, the homeowner never mentioned once in our 30+ emails that she lived in the house and that we’d be sharing it with her family. This was a gross misrepresentation of what we signed up for since the shared situation was not mentioned on the website or in the communication. We have used VRBO many times. This is the first time that we felt deceived.
We know that when vacationing on a lake, homes are built close together. Close neighbors was not the issue. We expected that “private” meant “not shared with other people living on the property” and we expected that our family would be the only ones using the spaces advertised. Our “private” firepit was a shared space with the homeowners and littered with a bunch of beer cans. Our “private” hot tub was on the homeowner’s patio, directly outside of their living area. If we’d used it, we would’ve had to walk upstairs and onto their deck. The “private” dock in the photo was anything but. The “private” deck overlooking the lake was directly below the homeowner’s deck. The overgrown plants on the steps made it difficult for our small kids to get around. Upon arrival, the homeowner told us they’d be having a party that night where she said that “things would get crazy” with lots of people using the stairs directly next to our patio and the small grassy area near the lake would be crowded. What!!?? Absolutely zero privacy.
We did lots of research well in advance to rent a lakefront property with our family. The discrepancy between the photos and reality is dumbfounding. We left within an hour of arriving. If the homeowner had even hinted at the fact that the “cottage” was attached to their home where they live, we never would have considered renting. Had we stayed, we would’ve been vacationing in a total stranger’s home with them and their guests. If you’re looking for a getaway with some peace and relaxation, keep looking.
If you are looking for a unique vacation setting that is rustic yet has all of the interior comforts you would want, a covered porch with the most relaxing seating as well as breathtaking views and lush landscaping surrounding you, then Tumble Down cottage is the perfect choice. The owners are very responsive and accommodating, and will do whatever they can to make your stay a positive and memorable experience. You'll need to be able to walk down a number of natural stone steps to get to this little paradise so plan accordingly, but once you arrive you'll see why it is so highly recommended. Whether you want to stay at the cottage, prepare your own meals and enjoy the extras offered at Tumble Down, or venture into the surrounding towns (Brighton is the closest, just a short drive, and there are zillions of places to eat) to experience the local culture, you'll find there is something for everyone to enjoy. I entertained my family and friends at the cottage just about every day, as they live locally, and they all couldn't wait to come back to the gorgeous views, hot tub and relaxing atmosphere. I highly recommend Tumble Down cottage and would not hesitate to book my vacation there again.
Enjoy cross-county skiing and ice fishing on the lake during the winter. Magnificent fall colors on property as well as several state parks in the area, Kensington Metro Park and Island Lake.
3 mile drive to Mt Brighton for skiing/snowboarding in the winter and golf at the Jackal in the summer. Many additional golf courses, restaurants, shopping, antiquing, etc are very close by. Travel adviser book provided in the cottage for recommendations.

A close drive to U-M (30 minutes), MSU (30 minutes) and Detroit (45 minutes), a great place to stay for all college and professional sporting events.
