Our group of 7 adults, 2 babies and 1 dog spent a lovely (if rainy!) Christmas at Barn Owl Cottage. The owner was really pleasant to do deal with and provided quick and useful communication. This compact rental sits within a mini complex of other holiday homes with a central courtyard between the terraces. Despite this, it doesn't feel overlooked and was very quiet during our stay. It sits atop a hill so we certainly got the brunt of the bad weather, but there are lovely views of surrounding fields when it's sunny. It's worth noting you can't use any of the nearby fields to walk your dog and will have to go further afield. Travelling to Totnes and local villages was easy and quick, and we found a lovely, welcoming church for Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. Totnes is a quirky, quaint town that we really enjoyed visiting and is perfect for gift shopping with afternoon tea & cake!
The furnishings are great for a busy family as they are hard-wearing, if not particularly luxurious. The wood-burner in the living room was easy to use and kept us all really warm, although we didn't really need it with the heating on. The communal games building with toy room and swimming pool was ideal for our party of mixed ages, as we could entertain the small children easily despite the rain. The pool was very clean and had modern changing facilities. There was enough room for two families to enjoy it at the same time, although we rarely encountered this scenario.
The internet/Wifi was pretty slow, but in fairness this is a country hideaway and so this probably isn't your top priority if you stay here! There were a few little niggles with the property that were highlighted through us having babies with us, but the owner was really good about taking steps to improve this. All in all we felt this place represented good value for money during the holiday season and we are really grateful for such accommodating owners. We probably pushed the limit of how many people could comfortably stay here, but with a few less people or more day trips out and about I think it makes an ideal Devon retreat.
We stayed here as a mixed party of 6 mature adults and 2 youthful ones and Reilly the dog! It is very well equipped and very comfortable, the wood burner is a great attraction. It is very rural, tucked away up a typical Devon lane, but no-one had any difficulty finding it with the instructions given. We enjoyed a good walk on Dartmoor (Haytor) and a superb family dinner at The Old Church House at Torbryan. I would definitely come again.
My parents both find stairs a bit of a challenge these days so this cottage with its ground floor ensuite bedroom was a real find. The fact that there was also a smooth path from the car-park made it easy for my mum with her walking frame to get to the cottage. The place was beautifully furnished and was well equipped with everything we needed for our stay. Our two boys loved the pool. We visited the aquarium at Plymouth and enjoyed a day at Brixham as well as a visit to the nearby National Trust properties, Saltram House, Castle Drogo and Coleton Fishacre. Some good pubs nearby including the Church House Inn at Torbryan and Turtley Corn Mill at South Brent. We will definitely come back to this cottage.
Thank you so much for a really wonderful stay at this fantastic cottage. Well equipped, clean, and wonderfully comfortable beds! It was great that we could bring the dog too! We will certainly be back!!
This cottage was simply perfect us and our 3 children. They really enjoyed the wonderful pool and the freedom of being able to play in the traffic free play area and games room. We enjoyed the really comfortable beds and the well equipped cottage which seemed to have it all. The location made getting to all the local attractions really easy. We ate at the Coppa Dolla in Braodhempston - their two in one pies are amazing as well as at several restaurants in Totnes. I can recommend a visit to Bigbury beach and Morwellham Quay. If you're looking for peace and quiet in an excellent cottage, this is the one!
Stayed in a lot of cottages and this one is up there with the best. Great location. Interior is stylish and very comfortable, beds great, bathrooms and kitchen smart and well equipped. Good food and pubs locally too. Would definitely stay again. Upside was the kids all played in the games room and watched DVDs with us so it's not all bad!
