Matt and I are long time islanders. Matt has lived on Salt Spring for 20 years after having vacationed here every summer since 1968. I have lived here for most of my life. My family roots go back to the 1930's and 40's when my great-grandparents farmed on the north end of the island, boating their produce around the 'Hook' to Ganges every Saturday during the summer - the original Salt Spring Farmer's Market!
We are proud parents of 2 fantastic boys and loving owners of Hank, the Golden Retriever. Matt is the owner of Steffich Fine Art and I am the pharmacy manager at Downtown Pharmasave.
Matt and I have travelled extensively to Australia, Mexico, and the USA, and we have spent many vacations exploring BC and Vancouver Island. Having stayed in a wide variety of accommodations we realized that simple and relaxed, private and convenient, comfortable and casual were the most appealing features of our vacation accommodations.
As dog people, we really appreciate being able to travel with our dog. He is an important part of our family and travelling without him would be like leaving one of the kids at home!
Christine Steffich purchased this cabin in 2002
In 2010 we made a decision to share our cabin as a vacation rental so others could come and discover the magic that is Salt Spring Island.
The cabin was just a sleeping cabin when we bought the house in 2002. Our friend, Jeremiah Hart, moved into the cabin soon after and traded rent for renovations. Jeremiah lived in the cabin for 5 years and, with his masterful use of space and natural materials, transformed it into a lovely little self-contained cabin that is comfortable summer and winter. The main feature is the deck situated under a large apple tree where you can relax in the peace and quiet of the backyard orchard.
The cabin is a short walk to shopping and restaurants in Ganges. Dog walking and hiking trails are easily accessed just steps from the cabin. Wine tours, boat cruises, parks, scenic drives, swimming lakes and beaches are a short drive away.
Our hosts were very nice and helpful. We have enjoyed our stay on Saltspring Island a lot and will definitely come back again.

My wife and I LOVED it here! The cabin felt a little snugger than I had gathered from the pictures, but we by no means felt cramped. The kitchen was well-stocked, and we had plenty of firewood to use in the wood-burning stove (which we did just about every day!). The landlords were kind and considerate while giving us ample privacy. The proximity to downtown Salt Spring was great! We will definitely stay here again next time we come to Salt Spring.
Exactly what I wanted, comfy, rustic and rural.
A most enjoyable stay!!
Cottage was just as advertised. Only issue we had (no fault of Christine's at all) was that it was quite warm when we were travelling and the sleep loft became very warm by bed time. This might be something that you want to consider before booking.
The cottage is easy to find and only a five minute drive from Ganges. It is well appointed and very clean. There is a lovely deck overlooking the yard and orchard. Guests will need to be reasonably mobile to scamper up the ladder to the loft bedroom and down again especially in the dark. Still, we wished that we could have stayed longer. Our hostess was very gracious in making an adjustment due to a glitch in the booking process and we thank her for that.
My wife and I really enjoyed our four days at the cabin: especially the deck and the yard where we enjoyed morning coffees and BBQ suppers. The yard, with its many trees ( some fruit trees ) made it very peaceful and had lots of space for our small puppy to run around. The small cabin provided everything needed to make our stay enjoyable. The finishing on the inside of the cabin was well done and made good use of the small space. The loft bed was quite unique and a bit of a challenge, especially for bathroom breaks in the middle of the night. Christine, our host, was very helpful and had lots of useful information such as good eating places, things to see and most of all, a place where we could buy fresh fish every day. We toured the island, did some wine tasting, beer tasting and had coffee breaks at a couple of the great bakeries (Barb's Buns, Embe Bakery ). All in all, our stay was exactly what we were looking for. We would not hesitate to recommend it to our friends.
