Overview

About the property

5 Bedroom 4 Bathroom Historic former B&B in McIntire District

A favorite destination for travelers from all over the world, The Henry Derby House which was formerly operated as a B&B and was recently converted into a full house rental in 2016. This historic home is perfect for families or large groups traveling together looking to explore downtown Salem. The house is centrally located in walking distance to all of Salem's attractions, but off the beaten path not in the middle of all the action. There is plenty of gathering space for large groups including a sitting room, dining room and large family room all on the first floor. There is an updated kitchen with new appliances and granite counter tops, as well as two full baths on the first floor. There is four bedrooms with five beds on the second floor with 2 more full baths, and two more bedrooms and a small playroom on the third floor. The third floor is best suited for children or smaller guests because of the low sloped ceilings but is very cozy. There is wifi throughout the house and a high def TV in the family room. There is also a working pellet stove in the family room which makes it a very cozy gathering space for the winter months.

About Philip Marchand

I am a letter carrier in Salem, MA and have been there for about 15 years. We inherited the B&B from my mother who converted our family home into a B&B in 2001. We also own and operate the John Edwards House, which is another vacation rental property located right next door. I am dedicated to maintaining these properties and making them a home away from home for travelers looking to visit Salem.

Philip Marchand purchased this house in 2012

Why Philip Marchand chose Salem

My parents bought this house in 1978 from my great Aunt and raised our family here. My mother decided to convert the home into a B&B after my sister and I had moved on to college. She loved the business and enjoyed meeting people from all over the world and sharing stories. My wife and I took over the B&B when my mother passed away in 2012 and did our best to keep the same warm feel to the home. With one child now and another on the way we decided that the B&B was too much work for our growing family and decided to convert the home into a full house rental. We are certain that families will love staying the Henry Derby House just as much as we did!

What makes this house unique

The unique character of the home makes staying at the Henry Derby House a different experience than your usual hotel stay. Built in 1840 this historic home has seen many transformations over the years but still has maintained the original character of the Greek Revival style home. The proximity to downtown Salem makes it a perfect spot for large groups traveling together to travel to Salem and have their home away from home.

This is a wonderful house. Lots of space for our extended family of 9.

  • 5 of 5

The kids and adults loved exploring the nooks and crannies.

Phil quickly solved our problem of several TVs cable boxes not working. He kindly allowed us early checkin at noon. And allowed a late checkout as we had an evening flight.

The house had everything we needed. Space, quiet and plenty of family time.

We loved our stay here and would certainly return if we ever have a family trip to Boston in the future.

Lots of room for our group of 12; great location; easy walk to restaurants & attractions.

  • 3 of 5

The owner responded to several questions prior to arrival, and was able to allow an early checkin.

The property is spacious and well located, but it is also tired and in need of attention. Outside paint is peeling. Inside needs a thorough deep cleaning. Suggest decluttering throughout the house & repair of the torn rug in the front hall. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils, but the drawers & shelves need to be emptied & cleaned. The fridge was empty...but dirty. Spent an hour cleaning it...very annoying! Except for the small window over the kitchen sink, the house windows do not open. The 1 AC unit in the back family room is not sufficient for cooling the whole downstairs. Had to purchase fans to have any air at all in the front rooms. AC units in 2nd floor bedrooms worked. The vent on one AC unit on

the 3rd floor was filthy. One 3rd floor bedroom had no AC at all and could not be used. Shade in small single pulled right off the roller. Had trouble with the front door keys & the lock box. The garden in the back has nice plantings...and even some apples! With some needed attention, this property has great potential.

Owner's Response: Carol, Thank you very much for your detailed review of our property. I am sorry that the house was not cleaned to your satisfaction. If you had let me know during your stay I would have sent my cleaning staff back to do a more thorough job. I will be in touch with them to let them know what they missed before your stay. We have been doing our best to declutter this house and have been trying to seek a balance between keeping some of the old decor and updating to more modern furnishings. I will take into consideration your opinion on having less items in the house. It can be a challenge to keep this house cool in the summer but we do have AC’s in all of the bedrooms. The room on the third floor with a futon is not counted as a bedroom in our description for that reason. It can be used as one if a guest chooses to but it is not listed as one because it does not have an AC. I have updated all the keys so they will work better in the front door. I know that one of them did stick from time to time so they are now replaced. There should not be any issues with the lock box if you know how to use one. Thank you for your compliments on the garden. We have a new gardener this year and she is fantastic! Very happy with what she’s done with the garden. We are always striving to give our guests the best possible experience at our house so please, PLEASE let me know if there’s anything I can do to better your experience DURING your stay. There’s nothing I can do once you’ve checked out and I’m first hearing of all these issues on a review on Home Away. I would have been happy to address any and all of these concerns while you were at the house. I am always available on my cell phone and very close by to handle any possible issues that may arrive. Don’t be shy! Just give me a call.

Wonderful time was had by all of us.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the Henry Derby house in Salem very much. Plenty of beds, air conditioning, washers and dryers and close to down town so we were able to walk a lot. The last day it rained but the rest of the time the weather was very cooperative. My daughters were happy to find a Dunkin Doughnuts shop nearby. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

A wonderful time was had.

  • 4 of 5

We rented both the John Edward's House and the Derby House for the wedding of my son. The accommodation were wonderful, plenty of space. The one concern was the air conditioning on the third floor did not run cool enough but other than that it was a great stay with extended family.

We are located in the McIntire District of Historic Salem. We are closest to the Witch House and the Gedney House, but also walking distance to the Salem Witch Museum, Peabody Essex Museum, and House of Seven Gables. We are also very close to wedding venues like Hamilton Hall, the Hawthorne Hotel and Salem Waterfront Hotel. Families visiting will also like to visit the Salem Willows which is only about a 5 minute drive. The Salem Commuter Rail and Salem Ferry also make for easy day trips into Boston. Other day trips people enjoy are up the coast to scenic Rockport or Gloucester.
