Kevin is an avid fisherman, and the captain of his own fishing charter business, Diablo Sportfishing, on both Cape Cod, Massachusetts and in Costa Rica. Aly, finished college with a degree in Leisure Management and has been fortunate enough to combine her education with her love for exotic places! Being that Costa Rica is one of the number one fishing spots the world coupled with the fact that this small country houses 5% of the worlds flora and fauna, neither Kevin nor Aly could think of a more appropriate place for them to live their lives; as this area is a true paradise to both of them!
Kevin Malone and Alyson Rando purchased this bungalow in 2005
Before graduating from college, Aly applied to do an internship at a resort in Arenal, Costa Rica. Unfortunately, her Spanish speaking skills were not very strong at that time, and she did not get the job! So, years later, when her boyfriend, (now husband) Kevin, asked her where she wanted to go on vacation, she immediately knew that Costa Rica was the adventure her heart yearned to experience! Having heard that land in Costa Rica was relatively 'cheap', Kevin began investigating different areas on the south west coast and planned the entire 15 day vacation around meetings with realtors! Both Kevin and Aly instantly feel in love with the 2 acre parcel of land in Bejuco, and even though friends and family told them that they were crazy to buy a piece of land in a foreign country, they followed their hearts and purchased the land the day before going home!
It has been a blessing to have found such an amazing and tranquil paradise which is surrounded by beauty and wildlife. Sitting on the deck every morning listening to the Howler Monkeys, tropical birds, and waves while drinking a cup of Costa Rican coffee and watching the hummingbirds dance around the flowers is a dream! Aly volunteers for the Villas Alturas Animal Sanctuary, helping to rehabilitate injured wildlife and also enjoys fostering dogs for a local rescue named DAWG. She takes daily hikes up the mountain road with her four legged friends and is always amazed at the wildlife she sees, including armadillos, frogs, monkeys, sloths, toucans, and snakes! Whereas Kevin has developed some great friendships with the locals and enjoys fishing with them on a daily basis! Kevin enjoys taking guests out on his boat to enjoy the Pacific and the wonder of spotting turtles, dolphins and whales!
My husband and I stayed in bungalow 2 for five nights in January. Aly was a great host and made sure we had everything we needed. It is easy to tell she takes pride in ensuring her guests enjoy their vacation. The pictures don't do the bungalow justice; it is beautiful, comfortable, and perfectly clean. The drive up and down the mountain felt a bit long the first couple of times, but it is really only about 15 minutes and the spectacular view from the bungalow is so worth it. We enjoyed sleeping in the open air of the bungalow and waking up to the sounds of the jungle. Each evening sunset was a treat too.
We visited several beaches in the area and went on a boat tour that included snorkelling and many dolphin sightings. Our visit to Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary was a highlight of our trip. We also had several fantastic meals; there are lots of restaurant options in Uvita and other nearby towns and villages.
I highly recommend this property, it truly is a jungle mountain paradise.
My 6 day visit (2/18 - 2/23) was set up to assess Costa Rica as a final destination for this retired marine biologist and especially its offshore big game fishing situation. As someone who has fished all over the world (see www.BigMarineFish.com), I had selected CR as the best potential spot for my retirement and I was not disappointed! I also chose to stay at the Jungle Mountain Bungalows, owned by Capt. Kevin Malone and his wonderful wife, Alyson, to see what living up high in that less developed part of CR might be like. You can see from their website’s photos that the bungalows are really nice, stocked with everything you might need, bathed by cool breezes each evening (no AC needed up there on the mountain), surrounded by virtually pristine tropical rainforest (CR has the greatest biodiversity of any place in the world), unspoiled yet largely un-populated beaches along the beautiful coast, with dramatic sunset views of the Pacific from the bungalows’ porches. Idyllic. Driving up and down the mountain (4x4 required) was an adventure in itself.
Kevin Malone is a top notch charter captain, extremely skilled in all the little details of big game fishing (such as rigging ballyhoo baits to look to a sailfish as if it were a real swimming baitfish) that make all the difference between just a nice boat ride vs. a day filled with the best fishing one could possibly enjoy (as I experienced with him, twice). The night before, we had decided to target sailfish offshore on my two days, so we got up early and Kevin drove his center console about 25 miles across a choppy Pacific to an underwater mountain known as the Furuno Bank where we fished both days. On day 1 we raised 9 sailfish and brought 7 to the boat to be fully revived prior to their release – which I viewed as an extremely good day’s outing. But he topped that performance the following day, going 9 for 11. These sailfish are big, 7 to 8 feet long and ours were about 90 to 125 lbs – more than twice as large as those I’ve caught in the Florida Keys – and since they spend a lot of energy jumping, sailfish are spectacular to fight. Ours usually took about 20-25 minutes to finally bring close enough for Kevin to grab their bill and remove the circle hook before release. On day 2, I had 30 minutes left on my charter “clock” but told Kevin to just “head for the barn” as I was exhausted and had had enough.
All told, our sailfish would have added up to about 2,000 lbs! Can’t imagine better fishing.
We walked through the door, and we instantly saw why this place had so many rave reviews. The ocean view right from your bed was breathtaking. We thoroughly enjoyed waking up each morning and having coffee out on the deck as we took in the surroundings. Even after several days, we kept pinching ourselves because the setting is so surreal. It was fun to take morning hikes all around the mountain. The owner was incredibly helpful and made the perfect suggestion for our 15th anniversary dinner at Porque No? She went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed and every adventure we had hoped for. We would come back in a heartbeat and hope to do so again soon! Just something to mention for other travelers planning their trip: In December it was pitch black by 6pm, and you really can't hike around in the dark in the jungle. There isn't a TV, so you may want to bring something to do in the evenings. We enjoyed drinks and conversation on the deck. The owner mentioned a future swimming pool, and I think an evening swim would be the most amazing way to end a day. That would be a perfect addition!
wonderful!! we loved staying here. It was really wonderful and we hope to go back and stay longer. Jenni
I had a wonderful and peaceful time at this little bungalow. Natural beauty for eyes and ears all around. We had everything we need at the bungalow. It was a marvellous experience. Thanks to the very kind owners who are sharing this paradise.
Our week in this jungle bungalow was exactly what we needed and wanted. The bungalow itself is well thought out and very comfortable. The location is heaven, nestled in the jungle, with a spectacular view, the feeling of seclusion and yet close to people (and civilization). We loved the jungle sounds! The owners are wonderful and quite helpful. There is plenty to do in the Uvita area, but quite honestly, you would have a wonderful vacation if you never left the deck.
Our Bungalows are located at 1300 in the beautiful jungle mountain area of Bejuco, Uvita. We are located just far enough from civilization to feel as if you are isolated from the world! But, just a short 15 minute drive down the mountain and you are on the main Costanera, able to shop for groceries, go to banks, find amazing restaurants and local sodas, and visit the national parks and beaches for snorkeling and surfing! It is like being in two different worlds!
