This beautiful beachfront-apartment is situated on the exclusive West Coast of Barbados. The spacious and well fit out accommodation is our private home and harmoniously blends contemporary amenities with some antique mahogany furniture: An ideal place to unwind in Caribbean atmosphere, a romantic getaway for couples, but also well suited for a family holiday.

The condominium is separated from the beach by a road with local traffic only.

BEDROOMS: (1) main AC bedroom with queen size bed, upstairs; (2) second AC bedroom with two twin beds, downstairs. (3) One sofa bed for two in the living room upstairs. A crib is also available.

BATHROOMS: (1) Modern ensuite bathroom upstairs with shower, wash basin, toilet, cupboard, having also direct access from the living room. (2) "Half bathroom" (toilet + wash basin) next to sleeping room downstairs.

The unhurried, relaxing atmosphere continues to the

(iv) covered balcony, fitted with a large sun shade, two sun-loungers, and a table with four chairs. The balcony is ideal for dining al fresco.

From the balcony of the apartment you have a direct view of the azure Caribbean sea looking southwest and northwest. In between, towards the west, the view is blocked by Hugo's first class restaurant. It replaces a formerly present, smaller beach house.

Beaches: North of Speightstown you have a long stretch of beaches. Just over the road from the apartment is a sandy beach with a palm tree and a large bush giving good shade. In just 5 minutes walking distance to the north along the coast you reach the long Heywoods beach (with many trees providing shadow), stretching from the Almond Beach Resort to the famous beach in front of Port St. Charles. In Speightstown centre are also beaches with sunbeds, for instance at Juma's restaurant. South of Speightstown is the well known Mullins Beach and many others further south. We love not only Heywoods beach but also the beach south of the Lone Star Hotel (excellent but expensive dining) with access from the Adventist church. The Folkestone Park in Holetown further south is another beach with shadow and good snorkeling in the reef.

Please remember: All beaches are open to the public and access is a right for everybody. Properties which front onto a beach own the land to the high-water mark only. So you can stroll and relax along the beach even in front of very expensive hotels. We provide for our guests a large and a small sun umbrella, two foldable beach loungers, different small and larger beach chairs, beach towels, also some snorkeling equipment.

Golf courses: Famous golf courses are in easy driving distance (Royal Westmoreland, Sandy Lane), but there are many other ones as well.

Visits: see North Point (Flower Cave) and the Scotland District with Bathsheba on the East Coast, offering breathtaking views of the ocean. Drive southwards to an Barbadian heritage, the Anglican Codrington College. Harrison's Cave in the center of the island is an amazing gallery of stalactites and stalagmites. See Orchid World, or Wildlife Preserve, and many other touristic spots.

Visit also the 300-year-old Sunbury Plantation House, the only Great House on Barbados where all the rooms are open for viewing. This house features mahogany antiques, old prints and a unique collection of horse-drawn carriages.

If you like winery tours, you will enjoy a rum tour at the Mount Gay rum distillery in Bridgetown, where you learn how rum is made from sugar cane and you can shop the probably best rum of Barbados at a good price. We recommend Mount Gay XO rum, but also another brand, R.L. Seales finest rum (black bottle with inclined upper part).

Visit also the Sugar Museum, just off Highway 2A, an exhibition how sugar was produced in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Portvale Sugar Factory nearby, presently the only one remaining in Barbados, seems to be only slightly younger.....


Eating, drinking, and related enjoyments:

Speightstown is not necessarily the place to go for a hopping nightlife scene. There are several restaurant at or very near the beach that offer open air seating, quiet island music, and more or less fruity drinks in a laid back atmosphere. Directly opposite Coral Sands is Hugo's first class restaurant (very good but somewhat expensive), situated in the place of a former small beach house. 4-5 min walking distance south of the apartment are the "Orange grocer", ''Nino's by the sea" and "Fisherman´s Pub"; all offer good and fairly priced food or a pleasant drink. Very good but more expensive is the Lobster Pot in the centre of Speightstown, as well as the very good "Juma´s" restaurant, and next to it "L`Attitude" beach bar and grill. The Lobster Pot is a bit pricy. Last not least, good and very affordable, the "Island Plates" restaurant on the eastern side of the Market Place (opposite Jordan's supermarket). Of course there are different Take Aways in town as well.

Higher priced restaurants with a very pleasant atmosphere are the "Fish Pot", on the sea, 2 km north of the apartment, and the "Lone Star" Restaurant in direction of Holetown. Very good is also the restaurant/bar "Zaccios" in Holetown. BA says, its the third best beach bar in the whole world ....

In Bathsheba: we recommend the "Round House", and the new "Atlantis" hotel and restaurant.

You should visit the capital Bridgetown and sip a cocktail or dine at the "Waterfront Cafe" (yacht harbor near old bridge). After this go Shopping in the nearby area on the other side of the harbor (High Street, Broad Street, Cheapside with many food stalls, and side streets).

Each Friday and Saturday night hundreds of locals and visitors go to Oistins for the Fish-Fry, an opportunity to enjoy the best local food - fried and grilled fish, fish cakes, sweet potato, and much more. Be early to find a parking place.

Farm fresh produce is sold every day on the streets of Speightstown. Before buying there, inform yourself about the normal prices asked in the supermarkets. An interesting place to visit on Saturday morning is the "Brighton Farmers Market" at Brighton Plantation, tel. 429 2639, in the St George Valley. Run by owners Michael and Alison Pile on their 17th century plantation, it has become an extremely popular social outing for families. A children’s play area has been added, along with a large number of picnic tables on the lawns, a café area serving freshly brewed coffee and pancakes, but also several other food stalls. The market is normally up and ready to go by 6am (open until about 10 am) and offer a wide range of homemade produce from bread and cakes to Thai spring rolls, fish cakes, pickles and chutneys, meat pies, sweets and jams, plus local artwork, jewelry and handicrafts.

  • Both bedrooms are breezy due to windows, but also air conditioned. In addition, a fan on the ceiling is present in each room. Different wardrobes provide ample space for clothing. The master bedroom on the first floor has as a queen size bed, and an en suite bathroom, which also has a second door to the living room. The bedroom on the ground floor has two single beds. A small WC is next to it. An additional sofa bed for two is in the living room. A fold-able cot is available as well. The apartment is ideal to accommodate four persons, but six are possible as well.

Beach chairs and beach towels provided. Mosquito nets provided. Housekeeping (maid service) twice a week. Linen and towels are changed weekly. More frequent cleaning on demand at extra costs. Welcome pack with basic food (at extra costs) possible, if ordered in advance. Unlimited local telephone calls. No extra costs for use of ADSL. Stay in contact with friends and family: we suggest to use Skype (or another company) for your overseas calls, if you have a laptop or smart phone available. This provides considerable savings. The flat is not suited for wheelchairs, because it is on two levels.

Perfect location for relaxing holiday

Coral Sands is 10 meters away from a lovely sandy beach in the quieter north west of the island. The accommodation is perfect for a family, with two double bedrooms with air conditioning and a sofa bed in the lounge if more sleeping space is required. The kitchen is well equipped and the parking is safe and secure, not that felt to be an issue for us anywhere in Barbados.

This was our second visit to this apartment as we enjoyed our first trip so much- and we will be back again sometime.

Superb apartment

Coral Sands apartment is excellent. It is well-equipped, well laid out, very comfortable and very well furnished, with lots of 'extras' provided such as beach towels, beach longer and chairs etc. There is even an ice-maker as part of the fridge/freezer. In fact, everything you think you may need whist staying there is provided. Sonja, the housekeeper/caretaker for the building, is on hand 5 days a week if you have any queries and she cleaned the apartment (mopped floors, cleaned bathroom etc.) 4 times during our two week stay. The owner, Thilo, is easy to contact too and always helpfully and promptly responds by email.

There is a lovely quiet beach opposite, and charming Speightstown is a few minutes walk away where you can find lots of decent bars and restaurants and a well-stocked supermarket.

However, just opposite the apartment where once stood a characteristic, charming old Bajan house now stands a thriving up-market restaurant. This does mean that there are lots of comings and goings during the daytime (deliveries etc.), which of course is of no consequence if you are out all day but does tend to disturb the peace and quite of the lapping sea if you are sitting on the balcony. At the moment, the restaurant is only open in the evenings but apparently there are plans to open at lunchtime as well in the future. During opening hours, the noise from arriving and departing customers and meet-and-greet staff can be annoying, and the restaurant's proximity means privacy can sometimes be limited. I guess these are initial teething problems which, over time, might be resolved but they certainly did impact on our time in the apartment.

In summary, a great apartment in a beautiful spot in what we consider is the best part of Barbados but with some disruption from the restaurant.

Owner's Response: This was not the first visit of Tony to the apartment. We appreciate strongly his comments on the apartment itself. The old Bajan house opposite was empty for many years, it did therefore not cause any traffic, but posed a certain security risk, which Tony probably was not aware of. With Hugo's restaurant built in its place (keeping a large part of the old exterior), the environs have been clearly upgraded, but certainly coming and going has increased. The owners of the White Sands condo negotiated with the management of the restaurant certain steps to diminish the impact on White Sands strongly, e.g. parking of cars and storage of most food in some distance to the north. We are therefore confident, that what Tony described were really only initial teething problems. And there is now the benefit of having an excellent restaurant opposite.

A Peaceful Home from Home

I love Speightstown and Coral Sands is a lovely spacious apartment with everything you could ask for. The living space on the first floor is a great size and perfect for entertaining with the lovely double doors leading to the balcony. The kitchen is large and spacious but importantly very well equipped. Never once did I not find what I wanted. It's also very light due to double doors leading to a small patio.

During my stay Barbados was threatened by Tropical Storm Maria. But no issue Thilo & Maria e-mailed me just to keep me updated, and with the threat of power outages the cupboards were stocked with candles, matches, torch and batteries.

The beach right across the road is quiet & great for snorkelling. The sun loungers and umbrella supplied were easily transported from the storage cupboards by the front gate.

Speightstown is a few mins walk from the apartment...great little restaurants/bars (Juma, Lobster Pot, Island Plates, Orange Street Grocer & Beach Shack) and handy Supermarkets too.

I will be returning, and if this apartment is available on my dates, I'd be sure to stay again.

Barbados is usually spared from hurricanes, which almost always travel further to the north.

What A Wonderful Place

We spent 5 nights and loved our stay. We rented a car for our time there so that we would be able to see the whole island and it was nice getting to come back to this place and not a small hotel bedroom. The place was perfect for the whole family, all 4 of us with two young girls (4 and 6). So much room that we were able to have our space and not feel like we were all right up on each other whenever we were in the rooms. The location was very good also (easy to find), right next to a beautiful beach, with hardly anyone there at the beach it felt like a private beach for us. The swimming at the place was great, just go out the front and a little to the right, and we were able to see so many different types of fish, an eel and several star fish.

As for the apartment, it was everything that was described in the listing and the owners were very helpful and supplied a large amount of info about the island and the different restaurants and everything else we might need to make the most of our trip. One thing that anybody going to this island needs to do, is take the catamaran cruise, they will pick you up and drop you off at this place and you will have an amazing day. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone.

The owners Maria and Thilo are both geologists, traveling a lot. They were looking for a safe harbor in an area not overcrowded by tourists, and found it here in Speightstown. This is a private apartment, not rented out via an agency.

Why Maria or Thilo chose Speightstown

We stayed many years in Barbados and preferred always the west coast as compared to the much more crowded south, where the ocean waves are often high. Our property is facing the beach of the so called 'platinum coast', the area has a fair amount of tourism but is not at all overcrowded. Expensive properties like Port St. Charles are in walking distance.

What makes this apartment unique

An ideal place to unwind in real Caribbean atmosphere, a romantic getaway for couples, but also well suited for a family holiday. The apartment is quite large and well equipped with modern and some antique mahogany furniture. The kitchen is very well stocked with electric equipment and everything else you might need.

We bought and ate a lot of fish. So fresh and affordable. Also rotis, the pea filled type, and pork hocks’ stew (in a blackish sauce) at the FISHERMAN PUB that was great. The crop over steel pan festival at Brandon Beach was a once in a lifetime thrill.

The Coral Sands beachfront apartment is situated on the exclusive West Coast of Barbados, overlooking the white, sandy beach, where you can swim, snorkel or dive. The condo is situated at the northern end of the city centre of Speightstown, just 300 metres north of St. Peters church. You can walk in a few minutes to the historical centre of Speightstown ('Little Bristol'), a city protected for its cultural and historical value. You find banks, shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants and bars. During the week you observe the pulsating life of a small busy Caribbean town: colorfully dressed, friendly ladies sell local fresh fruit and vegetables, fishermen bring the catch of the day to the fish market and you hear reggae music from cars or during festivals at Speightstown Esplanade.

Opposite the White Sands condominium is the newly opened first-class restaurant "Hugo's", blocking the view to the west. But there is still a panorama of the sea towards the southwest and northwest.

The beautiful rugged East Coast, famous among surfers, with its breathtaking views, is only a few kilometers away. White Sands is close to the golf courses of Royal Westmoreland (10 minutes by car), Sandy Lane (20 minutes) and others. Pulsating touristic Holetown is only 15 min away. This gives you the best of two worlds: a quiet haven on the edge of where it is all happening.
