Michigan sunsets and crystal clear waters equals life on "Cross Village time". Located on Michigan's #1 scenic drive, the towns of Harbor Springs, Petoskey, Mackinaw City and Cheboygan are all within a 30-minute drive. The great room is all windows offering an unrestricted view of Lake Michigan. A spacious deck, just a few steps out the door, juts out over the beach for sunning and star-gazing.
Rentals during the summer season 6/18 - 9/17 are Saturday to Saturday. Outside those dates minimum stay is 3 nights. We are currently booked until the last week of August. Summer weather typically continues through mid-September, and you may want to consider spectacular fall color weekends.
If your idea of vacation is more active, the area offers boating, hiking the north country trails, biking, antiquing and shopping. Three Pines Gallery and the famous Legs Inn are a 1 mile walk into Cross Village. Seven miles north of Cross Village, Bliss Park has acres of climbing dunes and sandy beach.
Bringing water shoes is recommended for swimming and beach-walking because the beach and water are a mixture of sand and rounded rocks. The beach in front of the house is sandy but the amount of sandy lake bottom varies from year to year.
The deck rests on large boulders jutting out over the beach. If your children are under the age of reason, constant supervision would be required to prevent them from climbing through the railings.
Bookings for 2017 will be opened about November 1, 2016.
Keywords: Lake Michigan family cottage
Our father, Carroll Appel, built this lake house when his family was young with the help of a local Indian carpenter and stonemason. They named it Shimnikon 'place of the apples'. When the family grew, Dad built a retirement home across M-119 and up the bluff which the family now uses. We rent the lake house to help preserve our family tradition for yet another generation.
Julie Appel-Hill purchased this cottage in 1963
Cross Village and the changing moods of Lake Michigan provide a getaway that restores perspective to our hectic lives.
The beaches along this stretch of Lake Michigan are sparsely populated. You can walk the waterline for miles and encounter few souls. Wildlife is abundant.
Once again we had a wonderful vacation. The grandkids had a great time on the sandy bleach. Our 2 1/2 year old grandson said that it was his favorite place in the world. Our dogs loved the water so much , it was hard to get them out of it. A great time was had by all .
Our week at the Lake Michigan cottage was beautiful, peaceful, relaxing. What more could you ask! The kayaks at the cottage were an added bonus to the beautiful cottage with floor to ceiling fire place, and large windows to watch the beautiful view, and large deck with additional views of the lake. We will be planning another trip, hopefully we'll be able to stay longer! Thank you Julie and Jan!
Our week at the beach cottage exceeded all our expectations. The view from the house and deck is simply spectacular and the beach is one of the best in northern Michigan. We were able to kayak in Lake MI and nearby inland lakes, ride bicycles and hike trails as well as float on air mattresses in the sparkling water and ride the waves in front of the cottage. Although there are several excellent restaurants in the area we chose to prepare our own meals so we wouldn't have to leave. Dinner at sunset every night -there is no comparison worth mentioning! We were lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves each night and a few times in the water side hammock in the afternoon. I brought way too many kitchen utensils -the cottage is very well equipped. We downloaded a few movies to watch on our iPad but the cottage has a large selection of both VCR and discs as well as a nice sound system. My cell provider is Verizon and I had sporadic but frequent service. We both agree this was the best vacation ever. Julie was very accommodating and meeting a few of her children was a pleasure. In fairness I write this review but a part of me hopes others will not discover this magical shoreline so we can return each year to the enchantment that is Cross Village.
This is the second year in a row that we stayed here. It really felt like we were coming back home! The cottage has a view of Lake Michigan that cannot be beat from inside with the wall of windows and from the deck just outside. The pictures do a great job of showing what the cottage has to offer guests. We enjoyed swimming and kayaking. Beach walks are always so peaceful. My husband spent many hours riding his bike on the Tunnel of Trees as well as many other area roads which have very little traffic. There are many things to do for day trips, but I wanted to get back to the lake as soon as I could. There is nothing more relaxing than going to sleep in the comfortable beds and hearing the sound of the waves throughout the night. Thank you, Julie, for letting us stay here again. It was great to meet you this year. We definitely hope to come back!
My best friend of 35 years and I decided we were way past due for a girls week away and were lucky enough to be able to get a week here at this fabulous lake "cottage". The view of Lake Michigan from the main room and the deck were beyond spectacular! We were inclined to just stay put and enjoy the sunshine, lovely lake views and gentle sounds of the waves lapping on the shore, however neither of us had been to the area before and also wanted to explore its many beauties.
The location was perfect for us....convenient enough to make day trips out but still peaceful with a feeling of seclusion (although there are neighbors on both sides, they were quiet and rarely seen). The cottage is right on the Tunnel of Trees road (M119), a scenic, narrow road that follows the shoreline of Lake Michigan from Harbor Springs to Cross Village. Some mornings there was motorcycle noise from groups taking the road, but overall it was not a bother.
We had a friendly visit from one of the owners, Jan, who gave us some helpful hints on what to see and do around the area and then he let us be, though let us know he was available if we needed him. His offer was tested when we loaded up the kayaks (that were so kindly left for guests' use!) and went in search of Lake Wycamp, which Julie had recommended for a nice kayaking spot (Lake M was a bit too rough for us to kayak). We had made several wrong turns and were really turned around so called Jan who went to the trouble of digging out all sorts of county maps to try to get us there). Once found, it was the perfect clear, serene, rather shallow lake to kayak on and we ran into only one other person in the 3-4 hours we were there.
The cottage itself is an interesting, well constructed mid-century modern style with a giant stone fireplace, beamed ceilings, and fabulous picture windows overlooking the lake. The kitchen, though small, is well equipped (but no dishwasher, be warned!). We cooked most meals at the house and had everything we needed to complete our meals. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom adequate. The highlight of the house, though, is that deck! Huge and appears to have been recently rebuilt, it feels as if you are sitting right on top of Lake Michigan. The sunsets truly were spectacular and they seemed to go on for hours....sometimes with color still lingering in the sky at 10:00 at night. My 2 dogs and the two of us loved walking the shoreline.
Could not have been any better-thanks!!
We had very relaxing week at the Lake House, the lake, the trees and the proximity to Legs Inn put us in a vacation state of mind. Really nice new large deck was wonderful for watching both sunrise and sunset. The wine trail with many new tasting opportunities continues to do the area well. Loved Heather's poem, "Grandpa's Hand" on the wall.
