Will be taking reservations for summer 2017 around November 1. Michigan sunsets and crystal clear waters equals life on "Cross Village time". Located on Michigan's #1 scenic drive, the towns of Harbor Springs, Petoskey, Mackinaw City and Cheboygan are all within a 30-minute drive. The great room is all windows offering an unrestricted view of Lake Michigan. A spacious deck, just a few steps out the door, juts out over the beach for sunning and star-gazing.
Rentals during the summer season 6/18 - 9/17 are Saturday to Saturday. Outside those dates minimum stay is 3 nights. We are currently booked until the last week of August. Summer weather typically continues through mid-September, and you may want to consider spectacular fall color weekends.
If your idea of vacation is more active, the area offers boating, hiking the north country trails, biking, antiquing and shopping. Three Pines Gallery and the famous Legs Inn are a 1 mile walk into Cross Village. Seven miles north of Cross Village, Bliss Park has acres of climbing dunes and sandy beach.
Bringing water shoes is recommended for swimming and beach-walking because the beach and water are a mixture of sand and rounded rocks. The beach in front of the house is sandy but the amount of sandy lake bottom varies from year to year.
The deck rests on large boulders jutting out over the beach. If your children are under the age of reason, constant supervision would be required to prevent them from climbing through the railings.
Bookings for 2017 will be opened about November 1, 2016.
Keywords: Lake Michigan family cottage
Our father, Carroll Appel, built this lake house when his family was young with the help of a local Indian carpenter and stonemason. They named it Shimnikon 'place of the apples'. When the family grew, Dad built a retirement home across M-119 and up the bluff which the family now uses. We rent the lake house to help preserve our family tradition for yet another generation.
Julie Appel-Hill purchased this cottage in 1963
Cross Village and the changing moods of Lake Michigan provide a getaway that restores perspective to our hectic lives.
The beaches along this stretch of Lake Michigan are sparsely populated. You can walk the waterline for miles and encounter few souls. Wildlife is abundant.
This was our second time staying here and it was just as much fun this time as the first. You can be out and about exploring and on the go or just hanging out on the property. The deck is awesome! We had coffee there in the AM and drinks PM. The fireplace is really nice and gives just the right amount of cozy to the cabin. We never saw any neighbors or had anyone bother us. Didn't even miss our cell phones!
We stayed at this lovely cottage from 9-3-16 to 9-10-16. You can't ask for a nicer view from the deck or the living room. Even though there are houses nearby, we walked the beach everyday with our dog and never saw any other people. Needless to say, the dog had a blast running the shore-line everyday and chasing the birds. Legs Inn restaurant is a great place to stop for authentic Polish food and it's only 5 minutes away, the decor is worth the trip! Crows Nest and Moose Jaw are nearby restaurants worth checking out. We also enjoyed staying in and grilling and having dinner on the deck enjoying the wonderful view. One of our favorite sites was a bald eagle gliding over the deck one morning while we were having coffee. I also never realized how many stars there are in the sky at night, the view was amazing! We really had a great time here and would recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a relaxing place to stay but close to some really nice towns to explore also. Thanks Julie, we hope we can come back again! Jan & Dave
This was our second year of vacationing at the cottage! We fell in love with it last year and counted the days until we could return last week. Jan and Julie are truly wonderful people. They are full of information about the area, very considerate of your privacy and really want you to enjoy your time there. Our time there this year was perfect! Warm weather, warm Lake Michigan water, sunshine and clear skies at night for star gazing and enjoying the Northern Lights . Our group included myself, my husband, our daughter and 9 year old granddaughter plus 2 water crazy dogs. It couldn't have been be better for any of us. Swimming during the day, playing games by the fire at night. We intended to stay there and enjoy the scenery and quiet and that is pretty much what we did. When we left for a run for groceries or ice cream we hurried back not wanting to miss any of our time there! I am so grateful to have found this place and look forward to returning again next year! Thank you Julie and Jan for sharing this special place with us!
Gorgeous setting with panoramic views from the deck. We had beautiful sunsets at night followed by hours of optimal stargazing. The beach was delightful, the water clear and refreshing and the kayaks were a definite bonus! The cottage offered everything we needed, comfortable beds, well stocked kitchen, wall of windows to view the lake, all centered around a magnificent stone fireplace. Julie made sure we had everything we needed and offered great suggestions on what to do and see in the area. In all honesty, we never even wanted to leave the cottage. Can't wait to return!!!
The cottage was right on the water and the views were spectacular. Cross Village is so natural and remote, it served as an excellent retreat. The water was very warm and perfect for swimming. Water shoes *were* necessary. The location is private and quiet. I found the whole thing a very healing and rejuvenating experience.
The cell service is minimal to non-existent. We were able to get texts through sporadically, but that was it. I have Verizon. Also, no wifi - anywhere it seems. I relied on the kindness of the 3 Pines gallery to conduct a little bit of necessary business via wifi, but had to drive to Harbor Springs to get some work done.
The lights in the kitchen and dining room were not working, but the proprietor, Jan, had an electrician in asap to get it fixed. He even brought over some lamps and fresh-picked corn as well.
As far as attractions go, the 3 Pines gallery was one of my favorite places nearby. They had a lovely garden, were very welcoming, and had onsite workshops for certain textile crafts. I created a lovely sarong with indigo Japanese patterned dyes. The Good Hart creperie provided a charming and atmospheric morning. Pond Hill Farms was delicious and gorgeous. There was a brand new nature preserve across from Rose's Antiques that felt straight out of Last of the Mohicans. And, as I mentioned, the swimming was incredible.
I would definitely consider renting again. My father and his girlfriend came to visit and loved the place as well.
Once again we had a wonderful vacation. The grandkids had a great time on the sandy bleach. Our 2 1/2 year old grandson said that it was his favorite place in the world. Our dogs loved the water so much , it was hard to get them out of it. A great time was had by all .
