About Kay Slusarenko

We are a Portland Architect and a Portland Artist who have owned Birdie's Cottage and Scout's Cottage since 1976. The two homes were built in the early 1900s and were part of a motor court with drive-in units. Sadly, a fire erupted one night and all but the main house and the laundry/fish cleaning unit were destroyed.

We rescued these two buildings from being demolished and in the summer of 1976 we, along with our three young sons, started working to restore them. We focused on honoring their past and adding modern conveniences to make our guests feel welcomed and comfortable.

Kay Slusarenko purchased this house in 1976

Why Kay Slusarenko chose Coastal Oregon

We are in love with the North side of Seaside. This is where the nicest neighborhoods are located without any condos or hotels/motels to disturb your peace and quiet. You have blocks of serene little streets that are so charming to walk or ride a bike through on your way to nearby downtown Seaside or to the Ocean front.

What makes this house unique

I especially love the fact that we are on a dead end street. This means that when staying in one of our two cottages you can sleep serenely and not have to deal with excessive noise. This fact is repeated often in our guests' reviews and is one of the main reasons that our guests are attracted to our vacation homes.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A message from Birdie's Cottage owner: This is a new format for VRBO/HomeAway. They now allow owners to include messages that owners receive after guests have completed their visits. So many times, I've received lovely notes of appreciation so it is nice to now be able to share these with you who are deciding which vacation home to rent.

Here is the message I received from a delightful daughter who visited Birdie's Cottage with her mother.

"Thank you Kay. We enjoyed your cottage and can see how it is your pride and joy. I slept like a baby in the bed which is not always the norm for me these days. Thanks again!"

Absolutely Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful and most lovely place to stay! The property is so clean and tidy. You do not need for anything other than food. The property is fully equipped with anything you need. There are dishes, including martini and wine glasses, toaster, ice cream shake maker, all cooking utensils, coffee maker, movies, books, soap, shampoo, towels, beach towels, and the list just keeps on going. The beds are absolutely wonderful and dressed with beautifully, soft, snuggling cozy quilts that just make you feel at home. The comfort was almost too good... made you want to stay home. The owners are so kind and provide news letters and resources of things to go see and places to eat. The owners are easily available to contact if you have any questions. The location is just perfect! Only about a block from the beach resting in a very quiet neighborhood. There really are not enough words to describe how wonderful our experience was! This is the place to stay at seaside!

Enchanting cottage by the sea

  • 5 of 5

I took my daughter and her friend to Seaside for a spring break vacation. We had a great time staying at Birdie's. The cottage is charming with sweet vintages vignettes. It's short walk to a nice portion of the beach away from crowds which we enjoyed, yet a relatively shortn walk to the action of the little town. We will stay here again if we make it back to Seaside!

Owner's Response: Christina, Thank you for choosing Birdie's cottage by the sea! How fun to experience the beach with your husband and your little baby girl. Birdie, who was an actual "special" grandmother to me, took me to the beach when I was very little and this left a huge impression on me. Such an impression that I grew up wanting to own a special place to go to that was near the ocean. After working towards that goal for years I now have my beach cottage along with the joy of seeing others experience their first (or fifth) trip to Seaside and to our cottage. Kay

A Charming, Cozy, Kitschy Cottage in Seaside!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I escaped from the city with our 10 month old daughter to Birdie's for our first time and absolutely adored the entire experience. The home is super clean and well thought out, with almost everything you need on hand (everything from the essentials like a coffee grinder and wine bottle opener to things you wouldn't expect like a rice cooker and milkshake maker). The beds are cozy, and the vintage (or vintage seeming) quilts soft and perfect. It felt like we were staying at the vacation home of a dear friend or family member!

The best thing is that this home has personality. From the quirky collections of things like snow globes, paint-by-number paintings, wood plaques with sayings, or even old knife blocks, there is always something to look at, admire, consider, and make you smile. There is an abundance of DVDs, VHS tapes, and books to enjoy if the weather keeps you indoors, and the backyard is a peaceful little green place with a hot tub (that we unfortunately didn't have a chance to enjoy!).

From beginning until after we had left, co-owner Kay sent comprehensive and super sweet, thoughtful emails addressing everything we could possibly need. You can tell a lot of love and pride goes into this home, which makes it head and shoulders above the average vacation rental. The furniture and decor here don't feel like castaways from the owner's full-time home, which is common among other VRBO listings. Everything here is intentional!

This trip was the first time our daughter saw the ocean and felt sand on her hands and feet. Our memories of her delighted face, squealing in the late afternoon breeze, will be complemented by our memories of walking the block to the beach from the cottage, and the walk we took with her stroller along the Promenade (2 blocks from the cottage) to the very family friendly downtown Seaside. She practiced standing and walking by holding the edges of the little coffee table, and enjoyed learning to sit in a tiny children's chair we found in a closet. We hope to return in the future, possibly rent out their home next door and bring friends or family with us, because staying here is an absolute treat and one that we'd like to savor again.

Thing to consider: if you have a lot of luggage, there isn't a lot of space to store it, other than the aforementioned closet. If we had stayed longer than 2 nights we would have taken advantage of the empty dresser drawers and unpacked our bags. Same goes for the bathroom.

Owner's Response: Dear Stephanie, Thank you for all the thoughtful and loving words in your review. Thank you for pointing out the attention given to the interiors of the cottage. It is important to Ron and me that our guests receive the same treatment and attention to detail that we would want to receive if we were traveling. On your next visit you'll find some new "things" to see and use. Each year we focus on adding something special and making Birdie's Cottage just that much more unique and special. Hurry back. Kay

Cozy, quaint, charming

  • 5 of 5

Small, cute and cozy cottage, perfect for a couple who wants to relax and get away. Good location within walking distance to the sea, the Prom and downtown in a quiet neighborhood. Fully equipped with an early 20th century style. It also has a nice hottub. We could only use it once on our three-day stay due to the electrical shut-off switch disengaging, and unable to engage it back on. The maintenance lady mentioned to us she was having trouble with it.

Other than that, we had a wonderful stay! We will definitely come back!

Owner's Response: Hi Diana, Thank you for staying at our cottage! You were a delightful guest. It took three professional electricians to solve the hot tub issue but I'm very happy to report it is running beautifully. Kay

Cute & very clean

  • 5 of 5

Thanks for the great experience! This small little cottage was perfect for two. Everything was ready for us when we got there, and the house was stocked with plenty essential items. Kay does a great job suggesting things to do and places to eat which made the trip a lot smoother and more fun! It was pretty stormy during our stay but we managed to get some use out of the hot tub the first day and it was great! The bathroom is a little small but overall very satisfied with our stay. Thank you

Nearest Beach
0.01 Miles
Birdie's Cottage is one block to the beach!
Car: not necessary

Here's a few suggestions of must-do activities in Seaside for the entire family. But please know this is just a hint of what is possible!

I write a newsletter monthly that spells out the events of each month, suggests adventures of historical significance and current outdoor activities and the very best of indoor pleasures. In Seaside you are surrounded by biking and walking paths both in the nearby forests and along the oceanfront; the Necanicum River, the Pacific Ocean, clean sandy beaches, the famous promenade, the downtown shopping area plus the factory outlet (NO STATE TAX!) is just a nod to all the possibilities that I write about.

Seaside is where you can rent a surrey or a mountain bike, build sandcastles, throw frisbees, fly kites, play soccer and volleyball in the sand and dip your toes into the cool Pacific Ocean under the watchful eye of the summer lifeguard -on-duty.

I'll also tell you where to watch the surfers, find the best trails, the best food, the best clam chowder and fish and chips. Paddle boats, kayaks are waiting to be rented just a few blocks from the cottage. In fact, 90% of all these above-mentioned activities are within a few minutes walk or drive from our cottage! Last but not least is the importance of soaking up some historical information that makes the history of Seaside and the area come alive. Recognizing that Lewis and Clark walked through our neighborhood to reach the nearby ocean is pretty inspiring and nearby towns like Astoria are filled with museums and historical Victorian homes opened to the public. The Fort Clatsop Park and the hike from the Fort to the Sea Trail is only the beginning of a deeper understanding of our country's west coast history. And after hiking, shopping, eating, walking, surfing, body boarding, feeding the seals, playing in the sand you always have the perfect beach home to return to and soak in the hot tub, watch the sunset, decide which of the 400 plus movies from the video library collection you wish to watch and best of all to relax, enjoy and recharge.
