Stayed in this house with husband and 4 kids. Location of this house was nice - half mile walk to the beach and very close to Straw Market. Access to Night Heron was nice. House was nice looking (if you didn't look too closely). Living room furniture was very nice and comfortable. Kitchen was not well equipped. There were 5 forks in the whole house which meant I was washing forks all week. Also had about 10 dull knives that wouldn't even cut bread. Cabinet handles were all broken or loose. 4 placemats in the house. Mattresses were terrible - covered with egg crates. King size bed made with linens that didn't fit. House is very dark so bring your lanterns. House had a gigantic laundry room which was convenient for storage. The tv was flat screen but an old non HD screen. Wifi was very slow too. They shouldn't have given up the screened porch when they renovated because house backs up to woods and it would have been nice to have the outdoor space. No nice deck furniture - just dirty old plastic chairs. Grill worked but not well. Don't plan to do a lot of cooking in this house.
My girlfriend and I flew down to Charleston, South Carolina recently, rented a car, and headed to Kiawah Island.A quick drive brought us to the gated community that we fell in love with over the next several days.
First, we had to pick up our keys from the front desk; however, this was no ordinary front desk. The doorman opened the door and escorted us inside. We were given packets (very helpful) filled with activities around the island, good food spots, and a map of Kiawah. Anything we need, they said, just call. Kind, generous, oozing with southern hospitality.
The cottage was gorgeous. Straight out of a Pottery Barn magazine, every detail was perfect. Plenty of seating, great kitchen (we loaded up with groceries from the on-island grocery store a mile down the road), beautiful furniture, the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on, ample linens, towels, toiletries, you name it - it was there and there was a lot of it. We did not go without. And any questions we had, we picked up the phone, pressed the "Front Desk" button and questions were answered. They even have a complimentary shuttle service that will take you anywhere on the island whenever you want. There is a button for that, as well. Luxury Living, I tell you. We did not suffer while in this lovely home. Grill on the porch we used several times to cook some ribeyes, tuna steaks, and BBQ chicken. When we weren't at the house, we were walking to the beach which is about a 5 minute walk, door-to-sand. Or we were at the pool with a pool-side bar and restaurant - complimentary towel-service there as well. This house is in the perfect location.
Aside from the cottage, we took full advantage of the island whenever possible. Tennis lessons, beach trips, pool trips, biking the island (bike paths weave throughout the island), kayaking the Kiawah River (with the dolphins playing less than 10 feet away), spotting alligators (from a distance), and being pampered at the nearby Sanctuary spa.
If you want luxury and comfort coupled with adventure, this is your next destination. Very happy to write this review and hope it conveys even half of the satisfaction that we have after staying here. Amazing house, beautiful island, perfect week.
We spent 4 nights in May 2013. The cottage is great. High end furniture and fixtures throughout. Good private location. Spotlessly clean. Bring:beach chairs, condiments, tin foil and laundry soap. Oh, also beer!
A note on "full resort privileges" yes you get access to most things but specifically cannot access: the community center and its Olympic Pool, the hotel pools, the pool down the road on Sparrow pond, etc. You'd think you would have a full run of all amenities with "full resort privileges"but the homeowners association apparently controls the other pools with the hotel pools are for guests only. There is plenty of other amenities but was embarrassing to walk into the community center with the family thinking you have "full resort privileges" and being told you cannot be there.
This cottage is very nicely furnished. Furniture is not at all worn - it looks as though it is new for the season. The location is excellent with a short walk to the beach and bike trails very easily accessible. My one issue was the lack of kitchen utensils. We have rented many homes at the beach and mountains and were never truly lacking what we needed to cook. That was not the case at this cottage. There was only the bottom of a broiling pan. As a result we couldn't cook steaks. There was a gas grill outside. We didn't check to see if it worked since it was so dirty we wouldn't have used it. There was only a small baking dish, no larger baking dish or cookie sheet which prevented us from being able to bake enough chicken or pork chops for our entire group. When we contacted guest services they replaced the broken toaster but didn't address the lack of these other utensils. So this is definitely a very nice cottage but if you are planning to do much cooking I would recommend you bring some of these utensils that aren't provided.
This unit in the Sparrow Pond Community of cottages has an excellent location for coming and going to the beach, very quick access on foot or bike. The unit itself is true to the photos. Furnishings are new and pleasing to the eye. Quality of furnishings is top notch. It is not spacious but served our needs - 2 adults and three teenagers. Any negatives would be house cleaning somewhat lacking - food under couch, dirty silverware, etc. but this comes with the territory I suppose. Would be nice to have a working gas grill. We love Kiawah and felt fortunate to find a newer, upscale, near-beach unit for this price.
