Overview

About the property

Superb view over the medieval town, shaded inner courtyard, 2 double bedrooms

At the foot of the Chateau, with an unimpeded view of the Cité, you can revisit the spirit of the Middle Ages in a completely renovated house with all modern conveniences. A completely fitted kitchen adjoins the living room which has a sofa bed sleeping 3 and leads onto the courtyard. On the first floor are two bright and airy bedrooms and a bathroom: the blue bedroom with a double bed leads out to a balcony with a view over the 'Ile de la Cité': the green bedroom has two single beds with a view over the Cité.

You can reach the centre of Carcassonne and the walled Cité on foot. A variety of shops nearby.

To get to Carcassonne: You can fly to Carcassonne by Ryanair from London, Shannon, Liverpool, Nottingham, Dublin, Cork and Charleroi (34 miles from Brussels). There is a shuttle service which takes you to Carcassonne town centre.

Getting around in Carcassonne: The shuttle service which passes the house will take you to Carcassonne town centre.

The TOUC service (from May to October) offers you free use of small electric vehicles allowing you to travel freely around the town centre.

The Medieval Cité is a cosmopolitan area where a large variety of shops are open at all hours.

It is also a place to meetings, to exchange opinions, and to escape from the humdrum.

Carcassonne town centre, called the Bastide of Saint Louis, is linked to the Medieval Cité by the old bridge which spans the river Aude. The town centre is 15 minutes away on foot. The 'Ile de la Cité' which lies between the two sites, is an ideal place for jogging or for simply strolling along the river banks while admiring the surrounding scenery (The fortress of Carcassonne).

The Medieval City-Activities: The city of Carcassonne, built on the right bank of the river Aude, is Europe's biggest fortress. It consists of a fortified central area, the Chateau Comtal, (can be seen from the house), and double surrounding ramparts: the outer ramparts, which have 14 towers, are separated from the inner (24 towers) by fortified walls.

Other must sees are the Porte Narbonnaise, the Basilique Saint Nazare, the Chateau Comtal and numerous museums.

City attractions:

The 'petit train'.

The Festival of the Cité (Dance, Theatre, classical music concerts, jazz and other styles.

The festival of the Bastide (town centre) from 5 to 30 of July.

A charming and comfortable house close to the 'Port de l'Aude' entrance to the medieval Cite.

We were charmed by this comfortable house and it's kind owner, Catherine. The ground floor comprises entrance hallway with wc and garage where there is a washing machine and tumble drier. First floor has the light and airy living space of dining kitchen, lounge area and small terrace. Top floor has double bedroom with balcony looking towards the river and the lower town (La Bastide), while twin-bedded room faces the cobbled street and ramparts of La Cite above. On this floor there is a well-appointed shower room. The house has everything you could need - also milk, juice and delicious locally produced wine on arrival. Our stay was perfect and our deposit returned a few days after we came home.

We enjoyed our October week here. Weather was mostly warm and sunny, only cloudy on two days. The house has easy access to La Cite above and we wandered there several times. Plenty of cafes and restaurants within the walls. I would recommend paying for access to the restricted parts of La Cite where you can learn about the history of the walled city and its restoration as well as seeing a great deal more. Walking to the centre of the lower city, La Bastide, over the old bridge, was a matter of only 15 minutes from the house at most and the railway station was only a further 5 minutes from the central square, the Place Carnot, where there are several markets a week. A great place to sit with a coffee or some lunch.

There are several cafes on the Rue de Trivalle, just a few minutes walk from the house and an epicerie for essential fresh foodstuffs about 500m from your door (shop in morning). Our favourite local restaurant was the 'Jardin d'Ete', also on the Rue Barbacane.

One day we took the train to Narbonne, there changing to the coastal train which took us to Collioure on the coast for shingly beaches and waterfront cafes. The journey took us through coastal flats where we saw white horses, black bulls and pink flamingoes. Trains were fast and efficient and we were able to buy our tickets from the UK before we went to Carcassonne. A great place for a car-free holiday, although I suspect it could be very busy in the summer months.

Fantastic.

Lovely apartment, very well fitted out and very nice feel to it. Fantastic view of Le cite, as the apartment is right at the bottom of it. Parking tricky round about so it was great to have a garage although pleased we turned down the hire car upgrade as it was good to have a smaller car to manoeuvre in. Hosts lovely and very welcoming. We found lots to do round about and the history, scenery and caves and gorges were stunning. Can't wait to return to this area.

Perfect location.

  • 5 of 5

Great place to stay in Carcassonne with a real French feel. Right beside La Cite without being surrounded by other tourists and within easy walking distance of the town centre as well. House was of a very high standard, lovely little courtyard, well shaded from the heat. Electric fans in each room, really welcome in the 30°C plus temperatures. Short taxi from airport, and we had a lovely relaxing week. Can't imagine a better place to stay in Carcassonne.

My partner, myself and our two dogs have just returned home after spending a wonderful week in this beautifully renovated, well equiped, perfectly located house you couldn't wish for anything better. Thank you so very much to Catherine and Jean-luc for making us feel welcome and for your lovely wine. We will certainly be recommending this property for friends and family, an absolute must.

Lovely Holiday, Lovely House

  • 5 of 5

We have rented a few properties around the Limoux area before, but never in Carcassonne. As we spend most of our time travelling to Le Lac de Cavayere and the coast - Leucate area, Carcassonne made sense as a base.

As it happened the house exceeded our expectations. Everything was catered for, and the house was beautiful - both in facilities and decor. We had some lovely evening walks up into La Cite - although bring your walking shoes as the cobbles are hard on the feet. My son & daughter (12 & 7 respectively) have a lovely time, and their room was great.

I would like to thank Catherine & Luc for such a lovely holiday, for letting us use their property, and for making us feel so welcome from arrival to leaving. We hope to visit again sometime soon.
