Overview

About the property

Cottage, 4 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

We are designated 'Beach Walk', third block from the beach. From the front door it takes 3-5 minutes to walk to the beach. Located on the corner of Myrtle and Holmes, the cottage is right around the corner from the free-water dispensary. Louis's Cottage is a 1930's bungalow. It originally stood in the Edisto National Park and was moved to this site in the 1950's. We have strived to save as much of the character and feel of the old place as possible. To us, this is what a beach experience should be. Enjoy the breezes on the screened in porch with swing and lazy chairs. (My kids like to sleep out there). Relax on the hammock in the afternoons while reading a book. ( This is my favorite pastime). There are two bedrooms upstairs and one full bath with shower. There is also a pull-out sofa bed that would comfortably sleep two upstairs with a curtain divider for privacy, if the downstairs detached bedrooms are not utilized. The downstairs bedrooms contain one full-sized bed two twin beds, a washer and dryer and a half-bathroom. We have had as many as 10 people sleeping in the house, but recommend it for no more than 6-8, as it is a small cottage. The two downstairs bedrooms are not attached to the upstairs. You have to go outside to access them. The downstairs has been newly renovated but is still small and separate from the upstairs. Please take that into account when renting this property. Access to wifi is available downstairs.

About The Owner

I am a homemaker, triathlete,

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2007

Why The Owner chose Edisto Beach

I chose Edisto Beach because, as a southerner, I have vacationed along SC beaches all my life. To me, Edisto Beach is what Myrtle Beach's coasts used to be. It is a family beach, unspoiled by too much commercialism. It reminds me of Martha's Vineyard. Everyone prefers biking to driving their cars. The island's very design prevents too much commercial development. Yet, you have access to a golf course, shops and restaurants, water sports and some of the finest fishing around. There is a lovely walking/biking trail near our cottage that is predominantly shaded. Biking/walking/golfcart easements are on practically every road in Edisto. To me, it is the perfect getaway destination.

What makes this cottage unique

I bought this property in 2007 because it reminded me of the cottage I enjoyed with my Godparents when I was growing up. That old cottage had been moved from Darlington, SC to a site in Surfside Beach. It was imperfect, with its uneven floors, and aged appearance. It was a place where we could let our hair down and be casual and just enjoy the beach. The first time I walked into my Edisto cottage, I had that same other-world feeling - like I had stepped back in time when things were simpler and time could just slow down. In fact, I named the cottage after Louis, my Godfather. He was in the final stages of pancreatic cancer when I brought him down to view the property. He whispered, 'I love it,' and that was enough for me. He and I both felt like we were back at the beach cottage I had grown up enjoying. That is exactly the way I feel when I come home to Edisto. When I leave, I am rejuvenated and ready to get back to 2012. I love to relax in the hammock. The kids and I will pull out the fire pit and roast hotdogs near the picnic table in the side yard. My husband and I love to walk the beaches in the early morning hours when the sun comes up. The dolphins especially like the morning hours and you can see them in little herds less than 40 yards from the surf. At night, our children like to take their flashlights and go ghost crab hunting. The little white crabs scamper all over the beach and the kids chase them and sometimes they bravely catch them and chase me with them! When the bowl-like jelly fish are around, they pick them up by their rounded tops and 'chuck' them deeper in the ocean. My sons love to skimboard too. We keep it simple down there and focus on the memories that we make together. So, come on in, but kick your shoes off at the door. Enjoy the original floors (and all their character and imperfections) and remember what it was like when you were a teenager and could head to the beach in super casual comfort

Best for ANY get-a-way weekend!

  • 5 of 5

House is simple & homey, like the beach. Great space to gather indoors, and upon screened in porch. Only 2 blocks from beach. Steps away from town water (Edisto tap water is only tasty for grits or low country boil). Colorful, shabby chic interiors. great patio and outdoor table for candlelight meals! And while there is only one indoor shower, if the weather is nice, which is basically year round, one is silly not to consider using the enclosed hot & cold outdoor shower! Love it! OH...and beds are comfortable; we didn't feel like we were sleeping on 20 year old reject mattresses! Important for restful sleep!

Charming

  • 5 of 5

Our experience was wonderful. Louis' Cottage was our home away from home for our little summer getaway. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed (we brought our own groceries for the nights we stayed in). We even brought some board games in case of rainy days, but the house already had some! The owner was very friendly and responsive. Definitely worth going back.

Shabby and no frills but great location and price

  • 4 of 5

No frills nor creature comforts. Things like Missing ligtbulbs downstairs, and everything is a bit shabby but if you know what your getting it's quite charming. Great location right by beach.
