Many of these have survived and worth visiting especially for anyone interested in the legend and myths of the Holy Grail. The number of places to visit in one week is almost unlimited and there is plenty to occupy you in Carcassonne alone for a week.

Carcassonne has a number of Michelin starred restaurants as many superb bistros especially in the old town and la Cite. For those with a car we can recommend several wonderful restaurants in the surrounding region.

Pipa and Alex moved to France with their young family in 2003. Having been often disappointed with the quality of holiday apartments where we had stayed, we decided to start our own business in Carcassonne providing holiday lettings for visitors to this historic City.
We bought this town house in 2008. At the time it was an almost derelict building. Today it has been patiently and lovingly restored keeping the character of a 18th century town house but with all modern conveniences. The ground floor is now a delightful and bright wine shop and art gallery.
We have lived in France for 10 years, brought up six children and want to share our love of France and Carcassonne with our friends and guests. The apartments were first rented out in 2010; the final part of the project has been the restoration and opening of the boutique wine shop in December 2012 which also a gallery and tasting room. Located at 38 rue Barbes on the ground floor, this wonderful and warm locale has quickly become a favourite meeting place for guests and customers alike. We live in the heart of the Minervois countryside about 15 minutes form town but we are always on hand. This family run business is on hand to help our guests make the most of their holiday.
Alex and Pipa Francis purchased this apartment in 2008
Rue Barbes is close to the centre of old Carcassonne town. It is an historic district with lots of shops, and the street itself is rapidly up and coming with new boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and a chocolatiere. The main market is a few paces away and it is safe and friendly place with lots of bustle. We love the atmosphere, the sound, colour and local characters, the wonderful bakeries and delicatessens and outstanding bistros and cafes are all with minutes of the apartments.
If you like wines or just want to learn more this has to be the best location for your holiday. In our shop on the ground floor we have an excellent selection of wines from local growers plus wines from further afield in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal with some new world wines joining us in the Spring. We are partnered with several wine tour companies and the local wine school who offer days tastings and courses.
A security deposit by cheque is required of £100 or €100,00 on arrival which will be returned on departure.
There is a charge of €28 per rental for linen, towels and cleaning of the apartment for guests on departure.
Additional sets and changes of linen are charges at €15,00 per set or per change.
We stayed at the Willy Ronis apartment for 10 days & were very pleased with the accommodation. Booking & contact with Alex & Pippa was extremely easy & any queries were answered quickly. The apartment was on the 3rd floor so be prepared for the steps but it didn't trouble us. It had a fully equipped kitchen & the bed & linen was the comfiest we'd come across in rental apartments.
The location was great, being very close to Place Carnot, & with all the shops & restaurants on your door step. The train station & Canal du Midi were 10 minutes walk in one direction & the old bridge with easy access to La Citie 10 minutes walk the other direction. Some street noise was experienced, but staying in what I would say is one of the best positions in Carcassonne, out ways this.
We had a fantastic time & would love to return one day.
This was a cosy apartment ideally situated in the town of Carcassonne. The furniture is clearly designed to reflect French style however some items, particularly the bedroom furniture, were impractical/tired.
Other minor negative observations were a lack of a proper oven and ill fitting lighting (wiring exposed).
Our main adverse comment was the apartment, whilst not dirty, was dusty and we felt it was not properly prepared for our arrival. Cleaning products were provided including marigold gloves, but the insides of the gloves themselves were old and mouldy. It was clear the floor under the bed had not been cleaned for some considerable time. There were assorted items left within bedroom drawers which presumably belonged to previous occupants.
However, on a positive note, the bed was clean and extremely comfortable.
If the above issues were addressed this would be a perfect bolthole for any visitor.
We have stayed in a number of the owners properties when in Carcassonne and have never been disappointed, and this was no exception. The flat was on the top floor, which despite the stairs was quieter and had no flats opposite for privacy. As with all the apartments in this building it is clean, very well appointed and tastefully decorated. The reception from either Alex or Pippa or there daughter who's name temporarily escapes me is always warm, and because they own the wine shop downstairs you can get a little flat warmer with great ease. I will be staying here again next year.
This apartment was easy to book and very comfortable (and well equipped) for two people. The owners were very helpful in settling in and our stay was most enjoyable. Carcassonne has lots to offer and, being very central, the accommodation gave an ideal base from which to explore the town and the surrounding area. The only drawback is that it's on the third floor which gives an ideal opportunity to get a little fitter but it would be difficult for the less able-bodied.
The apartment has an excellent location for both the "new" city of Carcassonne and the medieval city. The apartment was very clean and nicely furnished. The owner gave us great sightseeing and restaurant recommendatios. Just keep the stairs in mind when you book!
The listing was accurate in description and portrayal of the apartment, which was clean and charming and felt very "French". The kitchen was very well-stocked with lots of thoughtful extras, and the bed was very comfortable, with lovely linen. There were two things that made it perfect, however: the location, and the owners. The apartment is within minutes' walk of the fabulous market on the main square, and has many shops, cafés and restaurants in the immediate vicinity - it's hardly a schlepp to get your croissants in the morning, and the wonderful array of food on the market means you will be glad you've got self-catering facilities. It's about a 10min walk into La Cité, which worked well for us – I think we'd have found the densely touristy Cité area a bit too intense to stay in, whereas the Bastide, where the apartment is, feels like a "real" French town. And since the apartment is also situated directly above the wine shop run by the owners, Alex and Pipa, we also had an in-house sommelier who kindly organised a wine tasting for us, gave us a discount on the local wines we wanted to try, and was brilliant at advising on what to see, where to eat, etc. We tried several of the restaurants listed in the guide to the area they'd compiled for guests, and ate extremely well in all of them (esp recommend the one in someone's garden!). Would definitely recommend to friends, and will be coming back. There are actually three apartments in the house too, so we plan to come back with friends and book the whole lot!
With Carcassonne airport only 10 minutes away with flights from London, Bournmouth, Edinburgh, East Midlands, Liverpool and Belgium, Frankfurt and Dublin and Toulouse, Bezier, Perpignan and Girona airports a mere hour and half away Carcassonne is the perfect place for a weekend escape, short breaks and holidays. The apartments are located just off Place Carnot, the traditional market square of Carcassonne in the medieval heart of the fortified old town, the Bastide. For visitors to the town a car is not required but is recommended for anyone wanting to visit the region in full. For drivers there is long term secure parking close by. Here you can find a paradise of street cafes, excellent value restaurants and Michelin starred restaurants as well as markets and shops galore. For history lovers and readers of Labarynth there are Castles, and Cathars, for gastronomes the local wines and food, for nature lovers some of the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside in the South of France.
