The Apartments at 38 Rue Barbes are newly restored in 2010.

Each apartment shares a private entrance with intercom.

Apartment Cartier Bresson is located on the first floor . With high ceilings and tall windows the apartment is light and airy and the original wooden floors have the warmth and rich deep patina of a hundred years of history. The double french windows open onto a long balcony with flowers and window boxes. The french windows have original internal regency style shutters to allow guests to have the privacy and quiet enjoyment of the apartment. The sitting room is comfortably furnished with oriental carpets, deep sofas, arm chairs and paintings. There is a flat screen television with DVD, hi fi and free wifi. There is a selection of books and a library of films is also available.

The kitchen is fully fitted with marble worktops with all modern conveniences.

Rue Barbes is located just off Place Carnot with its lively markets, cafes and restaurants.

The apartments at Rue Barbes are three beautifully restored apartments located in the heart of Carcassonne old town in La Bastide, just off the market square in Place Carnot. Each of the individually decorated apartments occupies one entire floor of the property and is named after a famous French photographer.The apartments are perfectly located for the weekly markets, shops and alfresco dining. The property dates from the 1730's and the owners have kept the character of the property but with all the benefits of modern fittings, antique furniture and fine art. From the moment you walk into the apartments you will be transported to the elegance and romance of 18th century France, but with all modern comforts. Classic french beds, luxurious linen, deluge showers, antique furniture and modern kitchens. The apartments are perfect for couples wanting a romantic break or for small group bookings of up to three couples.

Carcassonne La Cite: Carcassonne is has one of the most beautiful fairy tale castles to be found anywhere in the world. It is the cultural and historical capital of the Aude region sitting upon the Aude river and crossed by the breathtakingly beautiful Canal du Midi.

During the summer it is host to innumerable festivals, and has the largest and most spectacular firework display in France on the 14th of July. Even in low season and winter there is plenty to do with the winter markets, truffle and duck fairs and antique fairs. The Carcassonne Festival takes place from June to August with many of the events taking place in Place Carnot. The famous market on Saturday is a must for all those visiting this beautiful and unspoilt part of France.The town is thronging with visitors discovering the Cathar castle and the fabulous history as well as the wines and restaurants of the region. With the spectacular fireworks in July, the fairs and festivals the apartments are perfectly located.

Cathar Country: The region around Carcassonne is world famous for the Cathar history, and for the many castles that were built from the 12th to the 14th century. Many of these have survived and worth visiting especially for anyone interested in the legend and myths of the Holy Grail. Within an hour you can be walking or skiing in the mountains of the Arriege, and within two hours in the Pyrenees. The number of places to visit in one week is almost unlimited and there is plenty to occupy you in Carcassonne alone for a week.

For Golfers there is a superb golf course at Carcassonne, as well as Mazamet, Perpignan, Toulouse and Bezier. A selection of men and ladies golf clubs are available for rental.

Eating and Dining: Carcassonne sits on the edge of the Langedoc wine region and is literally surrounded by vineyards and wineries. We can organise wine tasting tours for our guests and advise you on local restaurants and local specialities. Carcassonne has a number of Michelin starred restaurants as many superb bistros especially in the old town and la Cite. For those with a car we can recommend several wonderful restaurants in the surrounding region.

About Alex and Pipa Francis

Pipa and Alex moved to France with their young family in 2003. Having been often disappointed with the quality of holiday apartments where we had stayed, we decided to start our own business in Carcassonne providing holiday lettings for visitors to this historic City.

We bought this town house in 2008. At the time it was an almost derelict building. Today it has been patiently and lovingly restored keeping the character of a 18th century town house but with all modern conveniences. The ground floor is now a delightful and bright wine shop and art gallery.

We have lived in France for 10 years, brought up six children and want to share our love of France and Carcassonne with our friends and guests. The apartments were first rented out in 2010; the final part of the project has been the restoration and opening of the boutique wine shop in December 2012 which also a gallery and tasting room. Located at 38 rue Barbes on the ground floor, this wonderful and warm locale has quickly become a favourite meeting place for guests and customers alike. We live in the heart of the Minervois countryside about 15 minutes form town but we are always on hand. This family run business is on hand to help our guests make the most of their holiday.

Rue Barbes is close to the centre of old Carcassonne town. It is an historic district with lots of shops, and the street itself is rapidly up and coming with new boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and a chocolatiere. The main market is a few paces away and it is safe and friendly place with lots of bustle. We love the atmosphere, the sound, colour and local characters, the wonderful bakeries and delicatessens and outstanding bistros and cafes are all with minutes of the apartments.

What makes this apartment unique

If you like wines or just want to learn more this has to be the best location for your holiday. In our shop on the ground floor we have an excellent selection of wines from local growers plus wines from further afield in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal with some new world wines joining us in the Spring. We are partnered with several wine tour companies and the local wine school who offer days tastings and courses.

Arriving by plane or train is simplicity itself as the apartments are a short taxi journey or bus transfer away. We also can offer our own transfer service to and from the airport. The railway is within a short walking distance and for guests arriving by car there is 24 hour secure underground car parking three minutes from the apartment. The cost is €23,00 per week. For guests that require a daily maid service this is available at an additional cost of €20 per day. The Kitchens of the apartments are all furnished to a very high standard with solid marble work surfaces, butlers sinks, traditional terracotta floors and ample storage space. Each kitchen has a modern microwave oven, electric hobs, fridge freezer and washer/drier machine. Cartier Bresson apartment also has a built in oven for guests requiring longer rentals. There is a small library of books provided in the entrance hall to the apartments as well as a selection of DVDs in each apartment. The apartments have electric heating in all rooms. Fans are also available for all the apartments if needed in the summer.

Great base for exploring Carcassone and beyond. Many thoughtful touches to make our stay enjoyable. Great instructions to find the most convenient car parking close to the apartment. Many great restaurants to try nearby.

Very tired

I don't usually write reviews but felt that this rental was so substandard I should let others know. I'm sure when the apartment was originally completed it was fit for rentals however it needs another update urgently. The water was hot, the heaters works but the furniture was tatty, the kitchen very old and a bit unclean, the light outside the door of the apartment didn't work, the bathroom door handle fell off, the bed was lumpy, the shutters didn't keep the noise or the cold out. We also didn't get our warm welcome as promised in the details, the wine shop was shut and the owners were overseas, no free bottle of wine or flowers for us. The owners son helped us on arrival and was very nice but he is 15 so really couldn't give us the advice on the area we wanted. Also the bar downstairs was not the best and most days on leaving the main apartment door there was someone leaning on the wall smoking from the bar which you could smell in the entrance hallway. All in all we were disappointed, I realise that you get what you pay for however I feel that I didn't even get that while staying in this apartment. We only stayed for 3 of the 4 nights and gave up on the last night and checked into a hotel....

Owner's Response: We are always disappointed when guest do not have the stay that they expected and if there are short comings that should have been address at the time. We have read Ms Green's review and would like to address the points she makes. We called John and Debbie the day of arrival to explain that check in would be made by our son as they lady who normally would be there was at the doctors but would come by at 1930. Our son did his very best but he not a local guide and he showed them the guide book we supply and internet access. When Laurence then came by at 1930 as agreed to check everything was OK she also explained some local details for them. That evening we received a very strange and rude email from John and Debbie saying "Rhubarb Rhubarb". Perhaps some kind of joke but not very pleasant. I tried to contact John and Debbie that night by telephone and text to check if everything was OK. In the morning I received a text to say all good and that Laurence had been to see them. 1) The kitchen is not very old and was not dirty. It was inspected in full before we left. It was fitted in 2010, is in immaculate condition. 2) Door handle to bathroom. Frankly someone has to really wrench a handle for it to come off the bathroom and this was cleanly snapped off. Even if did come off by accident it could have been replaced immediately but we were not informed about this until the guests had left. We have a maintain man available for accidental repairs. 3) The light switch on the landing outside the apartment was repaired on the 10th March and replaced with a motion detector this week, but at the time it should have been functioning. Again a quick call and our electrician would have been there to check. 4) We cannot legislate who stands outside the entrance to the apartment but frankly the customers from the bar next door are mostly polite and considerate and are part of the local character. 5) We are sorry that the shop was closed but we do have to travel for business and sorry that Debbie did not receive the bottle of wine she expected on arrival. 6) The windows and shutters close perfectly. We have had guests staying in this apartment over most of the winter when it has been very cold and without any complaint, just compliments, so we do not accept this criticism.

Light and bright. Very sweet apartment near the Place Carnot.

My husband and I happily stayed here for over a month. The apartment is ideally located in the old center of Carcassonne, the Place Carnot is only a few steps away. It is an easy walk to the historic Le Cite. If you have a car there is parking a couple of short blocks away and the metered parking fees are cheap! We thought it was altogether perfect for us. I highly recommend this as a place to stay.

Ideal location for seeing Carcassone and the surrounding area, and enjoying the cafes in the square

Comfortable and attractive apartment. Clean, very comfortable bed, and the place was generally clean,but the bathroom and kitchen needed a clean before use, probably not the fault of the owners. The location is superb; easy access to the Cité, the old town and square, the canal and parking.

The only problem was the noise at night, next time I would take earplugs.

Carcassone Hoilday

This city apartment was very nice and the same as shown in the photos. Clean and well stocked plus 3 bottles of complimentary wine provided.

The only problem we had was that the noise at night was terrible. We very nearly left after the first night but then bought ear plugs so it was bearable. We should really have done more research as it was Euro Sport football and we were in the city so should have anticipated it. So lour own fault really.

However we had a good time and there was plenty to do in and around Carcassonne and it was nice to be near to everthing as we could walk to most things and not use the car. The parking offered was efficient and only about 7 minutes walk to the apartment and only cost 20 euros for 7 days.

All in all a very good holiday.

Beautiful Apartment

We stayed in the Cartier Bresson apartment for 3 nights in April.

The apartment is very clean, well equipped and full of French charm. The bed was very comfy and the bed linen was so luxurious. We enjoyed breakfast on the sunny balcony. Also the Wi-Fi connection was very good.

The owners were very helpful and ready to answer any questions we had about the local area. Thank you Alex for the wine upon arrival, it was lovely.

The apartment is situated very centrally being near to restaurants, bakeries, bars and shops. It is within walking distance to the station and la cite, the medieval town. Bikes are available to hire (near the station) and we had a lovely day cycling along the canal du midi.

As the apartment is located centrally, there is some noise from the street below, but it didn't bother us.

We had a lovely time, just wish it had been for longer.We can highly recommend.

The apartments are located just off Place Carnot, the traditional market square of Carcassonne in the medieval heart of the fortified old town, the Bastide. For visitors to the town a car is not required but is recommended for anyone wanting to visit the region in full. For drivers there is long term secure parking close by. Here you can find a paradise of street cafes, excellent value restaurants and Michelin starred restaurants as well as markets and shops galore. For history lovers and readers of Labarynth there are Castles, and Cathars, for gastronomes the local wines and food, for nature lovers some of the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside in the South of France.
