During the summer it is host to innumerable festivals, and has the largest and most spectacular firework display in France on the 14th of July. With the spectacular fireworks in July, the fairs and festivals the apartments are perfectly located.
Cathar Country: The region around Carcassonne is world famous for the Cathar history, and for the many castles that were built from the 12th to the 14th century. Many of these have survived and worth visiting especially for anyone interested in the legend and myths of the Holy Grail. The number of places to visit in one week is almost unlimited and there is plenty to occupy you in Carcassonne alone for a week.

Carcassonne has a number of Michelin starred restaurants as many superb bistros especially in the old town and la Cite. For those with a car we can recommend several wonderful restaurants in the surrounding region.

Pipa and Alex moved to France with their young family in 2003. Having been often disappointed with the quality of holiday apartments where we had stayed, we decided to start our own business in Carcassonne providing holiday lettings for visitors to this historic City.
We bought this town house in 2008. At the time it was an almost derelict building. Today it has been patiently and lovingly restored keeping the character of a 18th century town house but with all modern conveniences. The ground floor is now a delightful and bright wine shop and art gallery.
We have lived in France for 10 years, brought up six children and want to share our love of France and Carcassonne with our friends and guests. The apartments were first rented out in 2010; the final part of the project has been the restoration and opening of the boutique wine shop in December 2012 which also a gallery and tasting room. Located at 38 rue Barbes on the ground floor, this wonderful and warm locale has quickly become a favourite meeting place for guests and customers alike. We live in the heart of the Minervois countryside about 15 minutes form town but we are always on hand. This family run business is on hand to help our guests make the most of their holiday.
Alex and Pipa Francis purchased this apartment in 2008
Rue Barbes is close to the centre of old Carcassonne town. It is an historic district with lots of shops, and the street itself is rapidly up and coming with new boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and a chocolatiere. The main market is a few paces away and it is safe and friendly place with lots of bustle. We love the atmosphere, the sound, colour and local characters, the wonderful bakeries and delicatessens and outstanding bistros and cafes are all with minutes of the apartments.
If you like wines or just want to learn more this has to be the best location for your holiday. In our shop on the ground floor we have an excellent selection of wines from local growers plus wines from further afield in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal with some new world wines joining us in the Spring. We are partnered with several wine tour companies and the local wine school who offer days tastings and courses.
We stayed in Rue Barbes from 25th - 29th March the second floor
apartment, which was ideal for two, very clean and well equipped. The
apartment is very central and a car is certainly not necessary - in fact we flew
from Bournemouth airport and within 2 1/2 hours we were at the door to the
It was also very close to the railway station and therefore travelling around
was very easy, and it also gave my husband the opportunity to have one
more glass of wine, which if you enjoy the odd tipple couldn't be easier as
the owners also own the wine shop downstairs! Not only were they
extremely friendly but also very knowledgeable.
I certainly would return should I be in Carcassonne
A security deposit by cheque is required of £100 or €100,00 on arrival which will be returned on departure.
Linen and towels are included.
There is a charge of €28 per rental for cleaning of the apartment for guests on departure payable at the time of booking.
Additional sets and changes of linen are charges at €13,50 per set or per change.
This was an interesting renovation of a block of apartments in the old town of carcassone. Very traditional but wouldn't describe it as romantic!
The location was good for exploring the city but we we found it very noisey due to cars and people up and down the street until 2 am and then the street cleaners waking us up at 6am together with all the people buying cigarettes from the tobacconist next door. Sadly the renovation also meant we also heard those on the floor above us walking around the apartment.
3 bottles of wine was much appreciated as was the iron and the hair drier.
The location is terrific -- close to restaurants, markets, museums and there's a cute little trolley to the Cite. Look for free concerts at the Church of St. Vincent, and don't be shy about asking the proprietors for assistance. They run the wine shop on the ground floor, are charming and friendly, and sell a fabulous selection of local vintages.
We were met and warmly welcomed by Miranda who was our helpful contact throughout our stay.
The apartment was very "French" functional and clean.A little tired and a bit of an unloved feeling about it.It was sadly lacking in crockery plates chipped only one wineglass! Although there were champagne glasses,a good excuse to drink the local bubbly.Complimentary wine on arrival was appreciated too.
It was very hot when we visited so hard to sleep even with the fan provided and the noise from the street being incessant.
The best thing about this flat is it's location being so handy for Place Carnot and the Cite.We also spent a lot of time in Place Gambetta watching the world go by and enjoying the sculptures ,it is right at the end of the street,
The Epicurie was a lovely restaurant in an old stable, food was great, garden peaceful.
Really enjoyed Carcassonne and the property.
One last thought though was that Miranda ordered a taxi for us returning to the airport which never turned up,so left standing on Rue
Barbes for ages,so best make your own arrangements for that!
We stayed in Alex's property for 3 nights. We were by Alex briefly at the outset of the stay. He was very hospitable and kindly provided some guidance about the local area and other information.
The property was given to us in a clean and functional state. The place has clearly been carefully and thoughtfully designed. There is even a useful 'manual' available in the flat which provides useful advice on getting the most out of one's stay.
Overall we were very happy with our experience. The only 1 gripe preventing 5 stars would be the shower function. The shower is high quality however the hot water runs out so quickly that it is difficult for two showers to be had one after another. Otherwise fantastic. Thank you.
We had a lovely stay at the apartment which was warm, clean and light - a very successful mixture of period and modern and very comfortable. The welcome was great; especially as we managed to get lost in a Carcassonne that was pretty much closed off to vehicles for Xmas and so were a bit later than expected and in fact had to be "found" some way away! If you have a car I recommend parking it in the underground car park at Gambetta - a minute's walk away but very good value at Euro20 for the week.
The apartment has absolutely everything you need for a good self-catering holiday and is only seconds away from a good market and bakery, or from good bars and restaurants if you don't want to cook. The only downside with the apartment for me was that there is only one bedside table and light which makes bedtime reading (a favourite holiday occupation) impossible and finding your way to the bathroom at night a little problematic. Be warned, Carcassonne never sleeps, once the bars close, the city starts cleaning so it is not the city for you if you absolutely must have quiet at night.
With Carcassonne airport only 10 minutes away with flights from London, Bournmouth, Edinburgh, East Midlands, Liverpool and Belgium, Frankfurt and Dublin and Toulouse, Bezier, Perpignan and Girona airports a mere hour and half away Carcassonne is the perfect place for a weekend escape, short breaks and holidays. The apartments are located just off Place Carnot, the traditional market square of Carcassonne in the medieval heart of the fortified old town, the Bastide. For visitors to the town a car is not required but is recommended for anyone wanting to visit the region in full. For drivers there is long term secure parking close by. Here you can find a paradise of street cafes, excellent value restaurants and Michelin starred restaurants as well as markets and shops galore. For history lovers and readers of Labarynth there are Castles, and Cathars, for gastronomes the local wines and food, for nature lovers some of the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside in the South of France.
