A grand farmhouse perfect for a countryside retreat

About Debby Manz
We have lived in Le Marche permanently since 2004, arriving with 3 small blonde children, to a derelict house and to the great interest of a small village's residents who then thought we were a bit odd but now have accepted and befriended us.I'm English, my husband is German and our 3 children, all born in Uk but schooled in the local schools here consider themselves to be European. We have successfully run a business here lemarchehomeservices.com for some years and take care of many holiday homes in the area. We also own a property in the nearby village of Montedinove( a must see beautiful place) where we are based in the summer months. We have seen the area wake up a little to tourism but it is still very much authentic Italy here, and there are many attractions to life here and indeed for the visitor - great beaches 1/2hour away, skiing 1 hour away, art and culture, endless charming villages and one of the days I will get my dream classic open top car to really enjoy the beautiful countryside here...
Debby Manz purchased this Villa in 2004
Why Debby Manz chose Montalto delle Marche
We drove through Tuscany( too full of foreigners and overpriced) Umbria, Emilia Romagna, Abruzzo and Le Marche...the latter left a big impression on us and looking for houses we drove past Casa Montalto to view a ruin at the bottom of the hill, asking if this property was for sale.....the position is one of the best, the house itself imposing etc etc.... a year later, after many ups and downs we moved here, sympathetically restoring the house since then...a labour of love..
What makes this Villa unique
Nestled in a hillside, what first caught our eye was the symmetry of the house, the high ceilings, the central stairway and as we opened the broken shutters the views from every window either across the valleys to the sea, or towards the mountains or up to the majestic Montalto cathedral. We could see the potential and from then on it had to this house or nothing.

A place in paradise
From the very first minute we felt at home in the house, had a warm welcome by the owner, saw the stunning views and never wanted to leave again. On top of that we left the area with a feeling that we had a relationship with both the people and the area of Le Marche.
Thank you and so nice to host such fabulous guests.
A beautiful property in a beautiful location. Wonderful.
Thank you and hope to welcome you again!
Amazing Villa set in lush grounds and views from infinity pool in the centre of beautiful Marche
Can't recommend this Villa enough, the views are amazing, relaxed, effortless self catering especially if you have a very good chef as one of your guests as we did. Loads of fresh tomatoes and veg/salads to pick from garden as well as courgette flowers (my favourite, deep fried with ricotta filling). Great Moroccan style corner to relax, especialy at night with candles. The infinity pool at night as well as day is amazing. We saw a red moon above the hill towns that surround the villa with their light; like ships in the distance.
On to more practical details; there are two fridges and two freezers which is great; one fridge very cold for drinks and one normal for food. Lots of room for ice and gelato in freezers. Lots of shaded parking space for three cars.
The bedrooms are just so, with two ensuite and two sharing the best in the villa.
Nice local towns and 30 min drive to beaches and lots of good suggestions in house book for activities to get up to.
Great local wines to taste especially Pecorino (white) and local reds and fantastic local dessert wine.
Debby was very responsive to any request prior and during our stay. Go on treat yourself say here, we will be back.
My family and I stayed at Casa Montalto for 2 weeks in July 2018. This was our home base from which we did day trips to Fermo, Acquasanta, Civitanova, Offida, Pedaso, San Benedetto, etc, etc. The rooms are spacious with high ceilings. The high ceilings were especially practical during the hot weather in July. The house remained a comfortable temperature despite the 30+ degree weather outside. There are 3 full bathrooms with 1 half bathroom. We were 5 people total (2 kids ages 7 and 13, 2 parents and a grandparent). With 3 generations being together in the same space for 2 weeks I had concerns about being able to get away for some of my own downtime (kids, husband, and my own father for 2 weeks?! One roof?!) Moms, rest assured we all had ample space and privacy. There is space for everyone and Moms, you'll like this place because there's a TV and dvd player for the kids, and an outdoor fridge by the pool for your wine. There was something for everyone! Even my 13 year old, who doesn't like anything, didn't want to leave. Our host, Debby Manz, is lovely. She helped us arrange some outings such as an afternoon making pizza. This was so much fun! She knows the area very well and makes some great suggestions. There are 3 cats who live outside - they became an instant hit with my family. If you are not a cat lover, or are allergic, keep in mind that they live outside and keep pests away. This is a farmhouse situated in the stunning countryside of Le Marche so there are lots of animals living just outside the door. The 3 cats, a family of little fallow deer, and a hedgehog were practically a part of our family by the end of our stay. The kitchen is well stocked, there are cleaning supplies, dishwasher and washing machine for clothes washing (hang dry outside). Bring your own soaps / shampoos for all the bathrooms or someone will become the runner for conditioner which gets annoying when the whole family is getting ready to go out at the same time. The bathrooms are stocked with hand soap and toilet paper. We prepared our own meals for most of the stay using fresh produce from the garden outside or the local butcher and fruit market. There is a weekly market that offers some good finds such as porchetta. Part of the fun is getting to know the speciality of each of the surrounding towns (i.e. best bread, best bakery, best butcher, best porchetta, etc). The only complaint we have is that 2 weeks wasn't long enough! Next time we will book a longer stay!
Thank you for such a detailed review! Hope to welcome you back in the future. Really appreciated the house being left immaculately...
We do provide a body wash/ shampoo in all bathrooms normally but I’m just looking into some eco toiletries! Next time they’ll be there.
Great area, great villa, great pool
We have visited many villas in Tuscany and Umbria but this was the first time in Marche. There is nothing wrong in Tuscany or Umbria but this region in Marche beats the both with the views which are spectacular and the sea is also close if you want to spend a day on a beach. This is just the place where a people should live (or at least visit). The greenery and fields of mountains, hills, valleys and their gently shapes in different natural light in the morning, during the day and specially a bit before the sun set are adorable to watch. The Casa Montalto is also the absolute place to stay. Specially we loved the spacious well equipped kitchen, lovely infinity pool and peacefull bedrooms on the first floor. We tryed to figure out if there was something which you would miss when you are on holidays but could not. There are also good choice of books, dvd's and books available as well as traditional board games. Highly recommended. And the owners are really helpful. We met only Debby but she was really kind when we arrived and booked us a couple of restaurants during the week. Extra bonus was three good behaving cats who lived by the house but not in it. They just popped out when they wanted to have some petting. We are truly going to miss the week in Casa Montalto and hope we are able to visit it some day again.
A marvelous villa in a terrific location.
We had a two-weeks stay which couldn't have been better. Debby and Thomas were helpful and kind, as was Jo. Yoga on our terrace with AnneMika, excursions to Lago di Fiacra and the little towns close by. The villa itself is exquisite and well-thought out. Everyhting is there you could possibly need or want, and no matter what it is, bed linen or the pingpong table, it's perfect. When we arrived, the jasmine and roses were blooming and it was pure aroma-therapy. The view from the swimming pool into the Marché hills is a dream.
Casa Montalto is located in Southern Le Marche, halfway between the Adriatic coast and the majestic Sibillini mountains, where you can walk, mountain bike, swim in a cool reservoir or ski in winter.
The landscape of rolling hills and medieval hill top villages is reminiscent of Tuscany and Umbria but without the tourists. This is ' the real Italy' with friendly people, good value restaurants, old fashioned piazzas and a slower pace of life. The old town of Montalto and the impressive cathedral are well worth a look around. The next village along the valley, Montedinove has a lovely, concentric old town which feels lost in time, with a pretty piazza.
'The main towns of Ascoli Piceno with its travertine architecture and Macerata are well worth a visit as is the pilgrimage site of Loreto. Other towns are Fermo and Offida. Fermo comes alive Thursday evenings throughout summer when it's beautiful main piazza hosts a flea market.
The beaches are half an hour away and truly Italian in style with sunloungers and beach cafes and fantastic seafood! The nearset beaches are Cupra Marittima and Grottamare and we have secured a 10% discount with one of the beach chalets which hires out sunloungers and umbrellas and has a super restaurant. Next to the sun lounger sections are free beaches with more space for children to run around and have safe, warm sea and sand perfect for sandcastles!
The amazing Frassassi Caves ( huge underground cavern full of amazing stalactites and stalagmites) is approx two hours drive away. Outdoor markets and shoe/clothing outlets provide shopping opportunities.
If you enjoy a glass of wine there are some wonderful cantinas locally who are happy to let you taste the wines. We can arrange for guided tours of cantinas with an English speaking guide.
