Nirvana cottage is our Heaven on Earth. Just a hop, skip & a jump away from the ocean & beach. (nirvanahatterasDOTweeblyDOTcom) for details & rental procedure) This simple, one-family, cottage continues to be owned by the family that built it. Originally designed for a family of five with three daughters, this modest two bedroom home sleeps five (5). The sheltered screened front porch with rocking chairs continues to be a favorite. The towering observation deck provides plenty of space for star, sky & sea gazing. There's also the screened outdoors shower that makes it convenient to rinse the sand & salt off after a days play.
Rare to see on this part of the island, Nirvana's yard is wooded & alive with song-bird activity as well as a bird-bath and a place to sit among the trees to meditate or contemplate. . . .
Nirvana is 'old-time' with not a whole lot of gadgetry. Plan on hand washing the dishes and not doing laundry as there is no dishwasher & no washing machine. There are now a couple portable air conditioners that may be used as needed.Originally my folks thought people would spend their days at the beach so there was no central air-conditioning. High-set windows, dark wood paneling, wide over-hangs to shade the windows and a sea breeze that blows throughout the house with the windows and sliding-door open. The portable a/c units seem to help beat the heat. We have managed to obtain 'pool privileges' at a near-by sub-division for our Nirvana guests. With ceiling fans in each room, tiled floors and an ocean breeze wafting through, Nirvana is a wonderful nearly-hidden gem.
Check-in on SUNDAYS & check-out 10 a.m on SUNDAYS help lessen the 'heavy-traffic-volume Saturdays' that prevail on the Outer Banks. No-one enjoys the traffic-jam that occurs 70 miles up the road in northern Dare County. Or Nirvana is also available at daily/nightly rates too.
Simple, economical & easy to maintain. This cottage provides a place for rest & relaxation for you to find some peace at our beach haven.

Born in the scenic Hudson Valley of NY state & residing at Cape Hatteras, NC USA since 1982. That's me, at your service. . .
Marie purchased this cottage in 1964
My parents drove south from Orange County, New York until they 'liked it'. That landed Mum, Pop, 3 daughters & the irish setter in Nags Head, NC. Once the bridge was completed, my father drove us o'er to Hatteras Island & promptly purchased this tract of land that Nirvana inhabits. It was nothing but sea oats & sand dunes & wow, just look at it now! Over the years, Nirvana cottage has managed to be a treasure trove of nostalgic memories, now that our parents have passed on. My sisters and I continue to utilize & share this cottage with you. We try to uphold the principles & simplicity that our folks desired to share so a family vacation may still be with-in reach to others that wish to flock to the coast for their vacation needs.
This is a great place to be rocking on the porch. Listening to the call of the seagulls. Watching the pelicans fly formation over the waves. Beaching, surfing, walking the shoreside beach. Catching dinner while surf-fishing practically right out the front door. Hearing the ocean lulling you to sleep. Sleeping outside on the deck under the cover of a starry night sky. The aroma of beach bonfires in the salty, night air. Enjoying the wild birds as they flit around the trees on the property. It's a beautiful place to 'be'.
Always a pleasure to stay at Nirvana. The simplicity of the cottage; no distractions. The kitchen is supplied with everything you need to make scrumptious local seafood. The sound of the surf that lulls you sleep at night. Steps to the seashore where you can relax or walk the beaches. Look forward to my return!
This cottage is in desperate need of updating and yard maintenance. The bathroom is deplorable, the sink is rusty and pitted, and the bathtub is completely covered in caulk, and backs up no matter how many times it is plunged. Ants were everywhere. Shrubbery around the house was horribly overgrown, and what grass there was was not mowed. The only windows are small and high, and every room is dark, dated wood-like paneling...It was such a depressing place, we could not stay the entire week, and left after 4-days. This was without a doubt, the worst rental we have ever encountered.
We loved the peacefulness and morning light on screened porch in the morning, the tower (I always wanted a tree house!) and especially liked being able to rent for just two nights, not seven days! That was a find in itself! (We were in NC mostly to visit relatives in the Piedmont area.)The price was also very reasonable.
My wife and I had a few kid-free days to explore the Outer Banks and were happy to find a house across from the beach that was affordable and available for only 2 nights. Nirvana is basic as advertised but the observation tower was amazing (so long as you’re not afraid of heights). On our second night we appropriated cushions from the rocking chairs on the porch and went stargazing with a bottle of wine. Very romantic!
Other pluses include close proximity to the supermarket, well-maintained gas grill, a well-stocked spice rack, and a good assortment of pots/pans and utensils. Not providing towels or bedding is tough for anyone who travels by air as we did though.
Nirvana was everything they said it would be!! We had a wonderful escape with our family. We played on the beach and enjoyed the simplicity of our cabin. It was heaven!!!
My wife and I brought our baby daughter for her first trip to the ocean. We had a very nice and relaxing time. The cottage is situated close to the beach, making for quick runs to get any forgotten items, a cool drink or a break from the sun. We didn't miss the internet or cable our whole visit, and spent time on the breezy deck and porch reading, playing games, and spending time with each other. This little place was perfect for the escape we were hoping to have.
All of the basic needs are within a short distance from the cottage. Groceries, coffee shops, ice cream, and seafood are all very close. We recommend the Surf's Up Seafood Market near the Food Lion. They have very reasonable prices, great customer service, good selection, and the steam pot combo for two or four are a great deal compared to eating out.
I'd definitely stay here again if given the opportunity. It was convenient, well-stocked with the basics, comfortable and quite affordable. Definitely a great place for a simple, rustic-style visit to a great spot in the Outer Banks.
