Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms + Huge Loft, 2 Baths, Sleeps 10-12, Mountain Views, Walk to Ski Lifts

This is the #1 Rated VRBO in Taos Ski Valley! Situated at over 10,000ft and just a short walk from the base of Chairlift 4, the Alpenglow Chalet is waiting to become your family's favorite getaway. One of the newest accommodations in Taos Ski Valley, this vacation property offers *unmatched* views of Kachina Peak and the Sangre de Cristo mountains surrounding the ski area. Thanks to its height in the valley, sunrise and sunset paints a special glow on the mountains, hence the name 'Alpenglow Chalet'.

This property has all the extra touches to make your vacation memorable. Downstairs it has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, plus plenty of storage for your outdoor gear. Heated tile floors take the edge off the brisk mountain temperatures and the fireplace in the middle of the floor-to-ceiling windows is the perfect setting for a night of stories, cards, and laughs. Also, enjoy the large, flat screen TV above the fire for movies or satellite TV. The kitchen is open and has plenty of counter space for cooking big meals for the large groups that fill our condo. Upstairs, you'll find comfortable couches, a TV for DVDs, and dozens of movies and board games- it's perfect for the kids or young adults. Additionally, there is one queen, one standard, and three twin bunks in this spacious loft area.

If you don't feel like cooking, you're in luck! The highly-acclaimed Bavarian Restaurant is our neighbor. You will find delicious homemade German meals and the finest imported beers served in a beautiful and rustic Bavarian lodge. No need to drive, it's just down the trail!

In the summer, the Alpenglow Chalet is the perfect headquarters for all your outdoor adventures. Adjacent trails lead into protected Wilderness Areas and onto the picturesque Williams Lake. Towering above the condo is Wheeler Peak, the highest peak in New Mexico, and a great place to hike. We also neighbor 'Northside', a collection of mountain bike and hiking trails for all skill levels.

During the winter, a short 5 minute walk takes you to the base of the Kachina lift, where you can skip the crowds by putting on your skis or snowboard starting your day on the fresh backside snow! The easy access to and from the condo means you can have a hot lunch in the well stocked kitchen, or sit on the deck and watch your family and friends ski the Kachina bowl and trails.

Roads are well maintained in the summer and plowed in the winter, however chains (available w/ most car rentals) or a 4x4/AWD is strongly recommended in the winter.

About Rob & Lesan Marshall

We met serving in the Air Force. Mark & Heather were married while stationed in England, where they shared a mutual friend, Rob. The three of us have traveled the world together and shared many amazing memories. Mark and Rob still serve in the Air Force and climb mountains together in a charity program. Mark and Heather have three kids that are quickly growing up to be amazing skiers and rock climbers. Rob recently married a beautiful woman from Amarillo, TX, Lesan, who loves skiing and hiking with their mountain-dog Callie.

Rob & Lesan Marshall purchased this condo in 2007

Why Rob & Lesan Marshall chose New Mexico

We LOVE the mountains and that is why we bought this property. It is perfect for our families and we hope you are able to experience the stunning sunsets and unbeatable views. Each morning we wake up in the condo puts a huge smile on our faces! Give it a try- we're willing to bet you'll love it too.

Since we are moving all over the nation/world, we wanted a place we could always meet at and call 'home' together. So, while stationed in Albuquerque, we purchased this beautiful property! Now stationed elsewhere in the nation, we still meet up there at least 2-3 times a year in order to share more good times in the mountains and keep involved in our friends' and families' lives.

What makes this condo unique

WE HAVE A HEATED SINGLE GARAGE WITH SKI/SNOWBOARD RACKS FOR GUEST USE! Plus, we love how close it is to Chairlift 4 AND the Bavarian. It gives us time to have a leisurely breakfast before walking w/ the kids to the chair lift area. Plus, having a beer at the Bavarian is nice b/c we can just walk back to the condo and not ever worry about driving our entire vacation (once we reach the condo, of course).

In the summer we like to enjoy our coffee on the deck, then head out for a hike along the creek (just a stones throw away) or get our discs out for the free frisbee golf course.

At night we love to cook large meals and feed big crowds of friends and family, then gather around the fireplace for card games that last late into the night.

If it's winter, we make sure to go out for at least one night of moon-lit skiing in the backcountry above Lake Williams. It's a magical experience. (But we don't recommend it unless you are an expert in backcountry travel)

Guestbook comments from the owner

“WOW! Words cannot express how awesome this place is. Because it sits in front of forest land, you can see nothing but unbelievable views out the back with no civilization in sight. And out the front, from the deck, you can see the ski resort and the Kachina lift. The amenities are also unprecedented. The kitchen was fully equipped and we ate in almost every night. That gave us more time to enjoy our family, the roaring fire, the heated floors and the many games that were there. My husband taught our 4 year old nieces how to play poker and lost most of his money. The upstairs loft was the perfect commune for my Brother, Sister-in-Law, nieces and 3 month old nephew. They couldn't have been happier. As for Taos Ski Valley... absolutely unbelievable. The ski school was so awesome that my nieces were able to go up the "big people" lift on the last day. Also, I don't think we waited in a lift line the entire time we were there. Priceless memories were made. We are so grateful to our host for sharing this slice of heaven!”

We had a fantastic time using this property for our family ski vacation!

  • 5 of 5

The condo is nestled high on the mountain very close to chair 4. It literally feels like you have your own mountain home get away. The unit was very clean and well stocked with everything needed for our trip. The heated floors throughout were a treat along with the private garage. It was great for storing gear. We would absolutely love to rent it again soon. Thank you for sharing it with our family!!!

Magical!

  • 5 of 5

This was such a lovely, comfortable and convenient place to stay. It is enormous! When we first walked in, we noticed it was warm and inviting. Everything was clean and comfortable. Really, top notch for a rental property. Our 8 year old immediately ran upstairs - 8 year olds love stairs - and was absolutely delighted to find bunk beds! In the loft there are in fact 2 sets of bunk beds and a double bed. Downstairs there are two large, private bedrooms and two bathrooms. We cooked in the kitchen, which was fully stocked with any utensils and kitchenware that we needed. But the really best thing was the balcony. It faces the mountain peaks and was just a never ending delight. We also took advantage of the books and DVDs available. We watched Puss N Boots, and Daddy Day Camp. If you have kids, you understand. It was nice to have kid options. We poured over the birthday book and then we looked into 1,000 places to go to before you die. That was great fun! Oh, we also met some neighbors and everyone was friendly and welcoming.

Along with our 8 year old, we also brought our dog. The condo is on the third floor and only accessible by stairs. He was afraid of the bottom three stairs going to the condo, which are metal grates. However, by the second day, he'd learned to just leap over these last three stairs. Taos is very dog friendly, and it was easy to have him with us. If you're thinking about bringing your well-behaved dog, you should. If you bring your dog, the only place to dispose of poop is the garbage can at Williams Lake trailhead, which is about 1/8 of a mile from the condo.

The ski area wasn't opened yet but there was plenty of snow to sled and ride powder surfers. We went to lift 4 and played around, but the best place to go was right out back of the condo. The trailhead to William's Lake is right by the condo, so we also hiked up there for a ways and played around.

The stars at night put on the best show. There is nothing better than seeing that velvet sky full of dazzling stars.

This was such a wonderful place to spend a few days. We feel so fortunate we were able to book it!

Owner's Response: Melissa- What a wonderful dose of feedback you've provided. We are looking out the picture windows at Kachina Peak right now, smiling at the lovely description of your adventure! I'm psyched your dog found Taos to be such a welcoming place... it's true- dogs are welcome all over this area. We've been hard at work updating the property this week, including fresh holiday lights on the balcony to add to the winter flare (and new bedding, art, lighting, and more!). I only wish we had the new ones in for your 8yo to enjoy! Last night I saw a beautiful shooting star and I'm hoping you saw a few as well. There is no better place than here at 10,200ft with a 180 degree view to watch the stars (unless you are airborne or camped on a mountain top!). Also- Thanks for taking care of the property, you were very considerate guests. Come back in the summer and try the horse back riding, frisbee golf, hike to Williams Lake, and ride bikes along the lower paths and trails. Those, and just walking through Taos town center, are some of our favorite snow-free adventures. Happy Holidays to you and thanks for sharing in the spirit of Taos Mountain and our Alpenglow Chalet! --Rob

Breathtaking Views and Amazing Location

  • 5 of 5

This condo was great. The views are amazing and the location is key. The condo is within walking distance to the hiking trails and ski lifts. Rob was awesome, accommodating, and really easy to work with.

I highly recommend this property. We will be heading back in the winter to use it for ski season.

Owner's Response: Matt- Thanks for the awesome feedback. I'm glad to hear you guys had a grand time in the mountains this fall and that you'll come back to our getaway for some snow and skiing fun. It's a totally different feeling when the mountains are covered in feet of snow- the property feels even cozier and the hot spiced wine at the Bavarian warms the belly just right. We offer discounts (on top of any advertised special as well!) for returning guests, so we look forward to having ya'll back soon. Cheers- Rob

Owner's Response: Kimberly- We're psyched you had such a great stay. Those views really are exciting to wake up to, aren't they?!? A cup of coffee and the mountains calling me out of bed is a way I could start every morning. "Yes Please!" Well, thanks for your feedback. Let us know if you're coming back for some winter or summer fun- our returning guests always get a discount, since we love the idea of a few families making an escape to the Alpenglow a part of their family. --Rob

Frisbee Golf, Mountaineering, Trail Running, Relaxing, and Mountain Biking abound in the summer.
