Located a short 10 minutes off the 101 Highway and only 20 minutes from downtown San Luis Obispo, Mission Plaza and Cal Poly, The Windmill House offers travelers a comfortable and relaxing place in the country to call home. The Windmill House is located in the quiet countryside outside of the historic town of Santa Margarita, tucked in a peaceful canyon of the Las Pilitas Valley. Outside there is ample off street parking for vehicles, campers and RV's. The large front yard has an L shape lawn shaded by an ancient Oak tree. The back yard has concrete patio areas with tables, chairs and umbrellas and a Weber charcoal grill. There is an elevated landscaped area with fruit trees and rock roses.

About Berenice Parsons

Rock Basin Guest Homes Mission Statement: To be stewards of the land and its productivity while providing opportunities for guests to connect with the fruitfulness of the earth and the beauty and harmony of nature.

I purchased the 4 acres the Windmill House occupies with the 80 acre parcel next door where The Vista House and the vineyards are located in 1979. I had the Windmill House built in 2003 and used it as a month to month rental for 1 year. After attending a class at Cal Poly University on Agri-Tourism, I realized there was an unfilled niche for my home in the vacation rental market. I joined VRBO in 2005 and have enjoyed much success and many satisfied and returning customers during my many years of operations. Book your next getaway at The Windmill House and see why so many of my guests book their next visit before leaving.

Why Berenice Parsons chose Central Coast California

I converted The Windmill House from a month to month rental to a vacation rental to fill a demand for vacation rentals in a rural, country setting. Guests enjoy getting away from it all out here while only a short 20 minute commute from downtown San Luis Obispo and 30 minutes from the wineries of Paso Robles and area beaches. For summer visitors, our fog free weather is a welcome change to the cold beach house rentals and our mountain elevation keeps us cool at night. Guests can enjoy complimentary wine tasting at nearby Soaring Hawks Vineyards and Ancients Peaks Winery in Santa Margarita and several other nearby wineries.

What makes this house unique

The Guest Homes are clean and well maintained with all the modern conveniences including WiFi and Satellite TV. Guest are supplied with oak bark and charcoal for the Weber BBQ, foil, ziplocs, paper towels and toilet paper so you don't have to bring these bulky items with you. Seasonal fresh herbs grow from March - October in the garden and the fruit trees in the backyard provide fresh peaches, nectarines and plums. The Guest Homes are some of the closest housing for visitors to Santa Margarita Lake Park or events at Santa Margarita Ranch, Spanish Oaks Ranch and the Pozo Saloon. Book your stay now and enjoy the luxury of a true home away from home for your next vacation.

Beautiful quiet retreat

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful side trip to the Windmill house with our 5 children. We were visiting California from Connecticut. We were looking for a place that would allow us simple access to Hearst castle, beaches, and countryside. The home was very clean, had everything we could possibly need for food preparation, and had a great yard for the children to play in. The internet worked perfectly for us, our cell service (Verizon and AT&T) was a little spotty, but we were able to make calls through wifi without any problem. The children were very happy with all the channels they found on the 3 TVs (that gave my husband and I time to enjoy the patio). We loved the outdoor tables, wildlife (bunnies, frogs, lizards, squirrels), horseshoe pit, and peaceful atmosphere. Miss "B" is incredibly thoughtful and made us feel welcome (as did her 2 sweet dogs). We would definitely come again. The pictures truly do not show how great this place is!

Owner's Response: Phoebe and Family: Thanks for your review and for choosing the Windmill House for your family's California country experience. I'm happy to know the house provided all the features your family needed and that you were able to relax and enjoy the peaceful quiet of my natural setting. While the house is on a large ranch in the countryside, it's just 20 minutes to San Luis Obispo, 30 minutes to most of the beaches and a little over an hour commute to Heast Castle. I look forward to hosting your next visit to the West Coast.

Excellent Stay

  • 5 of 5

Me and some of my friends come back to SLO about once a year to meet up and this is the second time we've stayed here. The house is roomy (three bedrooms, pull out couch) and is really nice. There was a heat wave (over 100 in SLO) and it was really nice to have central air! Berenice is always super accommodating and helpful. There's free Winery coupons provided and we took advantage of those and had a really nice Saturday. It's been awesome both times we've stayed, would definitely suggest it!

Owner's Response: Jordan: Great to see you and your Cal Poly grad friends back again for your annual reunion. You were smart to book early for the 3 day Labor Day weekend as I have been booked every weekend this summer. Thank you travelers! It's too bad the weather was so untypically hot and humid during your visit. 105 in San Luis Obispo was record setting on Sunday as was the rain that followed on Sunday night into Monday. I'm happy to know that you all enjoyed your time together regardless of the weather. I look forward to hosting your group again next year.

Owner's Response: Debbie and Family: Thanks for your review and for letting me know you enjoyed the food from the Taco Truck in Santa Margarita town on Friday night. The Truck is a local favorite found in front of either Dunbar Brewery or the Range Tavern on weekends. It's another dining option for our little town with two cafes and a dinner restaurant. I hope to have you back for a longer stay next time.

Planned a guys' getaway for the weekend and we all very much enjoyed our stay. While there we saw deer, hundreds of tiny toads, rabbits, and lizards, the sky was so clear at night and the stars were beautiful. The house was comfortable and Ms B was very welcoming.

Owner's Response: Ryan and Guys: it was great to meet all of you and chat for a bit. I'm glad you had a chance to enjoy the night sky as the moon was dark during your stay, making the stars that much brighter. The south swell from the lingering tropical storms made for some good waves for your last surf-out together before Matt ties the knot this fall. I hope to see you back for your next surfing safari, perhaps with wives and families, too.

Great place to get away

  • 5 of 5

Berenice's house provided a great time for my group of friends and was a nice place to get away as it is located in a secluded area. It was very nice to see all the stars at night since the house is located away from light pollution. Berenice is a very welcoming host and made the stay very pleasant.

Just loved it!

  • 5 of 5

Our family really enjoyed our short stay at this home. It was very clean, tidy, comfortable and roomy. We loved that it was out in the country ... quiet and beautiful ... and the short winding road to the house was pretty and fun. And it was still close enough to SLO to be convenient. Bereniece was very helpful to make sure we had everything we needed. We were sorry to have to leave so soon!

Owner's Response: Dear A and Family: Thanks so much for letting me know you all enjoyed your brief time here. I heard you had flight and freeway delays getting here for the wedding you were attending, so I am sorry you didn't have a little more time to spend enjoying the property and the area. Perhaps on your next visit.
