About Thomas Greenan

I relocated from LI NY to South Florida in 1996, where I currently reside. I live in Palm Beach Gardens and still get to visit our family vacation home periodically.

Thomas Greenan purchased this house in 1968

Why Thomas Greenan chose Central Vermont / Sugarbush / Mad River Valley

My dad purchased this property in 1968. It has been in our family since and would love for it to remain that way. I have spent the better part of my childhood and teenage years at this house and enjoyed all the outdoor activities that you would expect to find in an area like this. We hope to rent it to individuals that can appreciate the beauty of it and enjoy it as much as we do

What makes this house unique

The serene tranquility of sitting on the porch and simply taking in everything that Mother Nature has to offer is one of the pleasures that you can experience after taking in all the outdoor activities.

Not quite what we exected.

First, Thomas was great to work with, responsive and helpful - no issues there whatsoever.

On our expectation side of things, we were highly aware that we were staying in a cabin - nothing super fancy but necessary to avoid rainy days/nights in a tent with the amenities to make five days away with kids a bit more enjoyable.

It should be noted that the water is non-potable which is an important consideration (especially with kids) and that although the photo and description indicate a washer/dryer, there are none. The house was relatively clean all things considered, however, the "not seen" parts of the floor (e.g. - under beds, side of cabinets, etc.) were super filthy and lots of dust bunnies, etc. Again, I note this with the reality of having two children stay who tend to move beyond just the walking space! The personal items left out was a bit much to be honest given that it was a rental as well - from a tube of eye drops in the living room to a half empty bottle of soda in the kitchen - for us, honestly, it was just beyond the "lived in/homey" feel and more of an uncomfortable stay in the house of someone we did not know.

We did our best to spend the better part of the days out and about adventuring around Vermont rather than in and around the cabin. Most of our adventures took us between 30-130 minutes from this location - not the best/not the worst. The road up to the house was in super rough shape and with quite a slope. Thankfully. I had an all-wheel drive SUV - fairly certain a sedan of any sort would have bottomed out with the major ruts and washed away areas. Again, something to consider!

There is not much land around the cabin (thinking of kids being able to run around and stretch their legs a bit) and the stairs to the dock and dock itself were too narrow/steep to let them use. Likewise, as one of the comments mentioned previously, the water is not for swimming around the cabin...you would need to go to the public access around the bend.

Fairly loud at night between fireworks being set off two houses down one night to loud voices travelling over the water from the public access area until 9-10pm. The process to check in/out was difficult as the person in charge of this was not accessible by phone which made it tough.

I use VRBO a lot and I appreciated the owners speedy responses along the way and outreach to assist in our travel to VT, however, this would not be a location I would look to book in the future.

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

This little place on Curtis Pond was perfect for our week of hiking. Waking up to the beauty of Curtis Pond and returning for the sunsets was great. Quiet the whole time, convenient to Montpeilar, and very private. Wi-Fi worked great, but you really don't want to spend much time connected. A nice family aura.

Great location on beautiful Curtis Pond

  • 3 of 5

The setting of the cabin is lovely, tucked into the woods with lots of privacy. Walking distance to Maple Corner where, under one roof, you can find the Post Office, delicious pizza and sandwiches, wine, a variety of other foods, gifts and even a bar with local music! Morse Farm is only 15 minutes away and another 5 to Montpelier. The cabin sits up from the pond so there are steps to the dock which is narrow, not a dock to hold a few Adirondack chairs and watch the sunset. The dock also lacked a safe ladder into the water so we found ourselves going to the nearby public beach which was disappointing. The house itself is very roomy and a great space for family gatherings. We enjoyed hanging out on the screened-in porch and sitting around the fire pit in the evenings.

Peaceful, beautiful views

  • 5 of 5

We were in Vermont for our son's wedding and wanted a place to get away from the festivities and have our family all in one location. This property was perfect for that purpose. Rustic, yet homelike, we enjoyed cooking for family (the kitchen comes fully furnished), sitting on the screened porch, and making a fire in the fire pit. The property easily sleeps 9 (we had 6). There is a country store about a 10 minute walk away that is convenient if you forget a key ingredient. The best part is Curtis Pond. -- we called it "On Golden Pond." Amazing sunrises and quiet moments.

Pondside camp - great for families

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for a week in early July 2014 and didn't know quite what to expect before seeing it but it was spacious, clean, and fun. You walk in and think, what a great place for a family gathering! The bedrooms are all upstairs and the one bathroom downstairs so that's a little funky but it's a camp after all, not a luxury rental. I think the price is quite reasonable given the location with it's own dock, rowboat included! It's definitely a family house, complete with a lot of family stuff crammed into cabinets and dressers, but some of it (fishing poles) came in handy. The screened-in porch is an understated charmer and we spent much of our time on it, watching over our 6 year olds as they tromped up and down to the dock. The water is shallow by the dock, so relatively safe for children who have had some swimming experience, plus there are ample life jackets to wear when boating.

The owner, Tom, was really excellent about answering our questions and concerns and handled a potentially unhappy situation (dock in disrepair and needing replacement) with equanimity and graciousness and even extended our stay for a few nights so we could finally use the new dock that was delayed in arriving. So that was really super. My rating is 4 stars as I think the house could do with some cleaning out and tidying up of stuff and also some tree trimming to bring more sunshine onto the house and dock.

We are frequent visitors to Maple Corner and used to live in the area so our main attractions were our friends and family but the Maple Corner store now hosts a bar with live music (The Whammy Bar) which is such an awesome, walkable amenity! Plus there are community offerings such as a barn dance at the big blue barn, yoga at the community center, and swimming lessons in the pond in the morning (alas not a hit with my shivering children but they let us drop-in and check it out). It's very low-key and to find information about events you probably need to check the bulletin board at the store and the community center -- it's a lovely, old-fashioned place!

Magical

  • 4 of 5

We absolutely loved this camp. My husband and I were in VT for the week before our daughter's wedding, helping them to get ready. We needed a place near Montpelier and this was the perfect distance. The minute we walked in the house, I felt like I had lived there before. Nothing fancy but perfectly homey and comfortable. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen an adequate size to work in and the front screened in porch overlooking the pond was the best. Lots of stairs down to the pond but once there the water was great, the loons were fun to watch and listen to and our yellow lab thought she was in heaven. I imagine this is also a fishermen's paradise. We would recommend this to people who enjoy a rustic atmosphere and relaxed living. Can't wait to go back!

Owner's Response: Laura, Thank you for staying at our place. As you enjoyed it, I appreciated you being there. Sue was extremely happy with the way you left the place and has advised me that you were an ideal renter! Thank you so much for the kind words about our place. It means the world to my family that other families are able to enjoy the beauty that is Vermont and make memories as my family did growing up. Thanks again for choosing my place during your daughters special day! I look forward to having you back.. Regards, Tom Greenan
