periods of the year in the nearby towns there are many 'sagra' (typical town festivals with fireworks, live music, medieval representations). There are typical family owned restaurants close to us (in Vico d'Elsa, S. Appiano, Petrognano, as well as Barberino Val d'Elsa, Tavarnelle and San Gimignano) where you may taste the Tuscan food, or even take a cooking class, if interested. Wine tasting tours are a must! I am Guido, the manager 'factotum' here at Castello di Pastine.
I was born in Florence on 1975. I spent all my childhood in Firenze, growing up with my brother Nicola, who is now a priest. After High-school, I had the opportunity to go abroad and study in Boston, at Boston University, School of Communication, where I got my bachelor on 2001.
Back in Florence, I felt in love of an Italian girl, who is now my wife. We got married on 2005, in a beautiful Church, near by Pastine. Now we have 3 marvelous children, who are our joy.
Among my greatest passions/hobbies are: board games and theater (I am an impro-actor, and I have an amateur theater company).
I am behind Castello di Pastine since 2004/2005. And I love my job.
Mr. Guido purchased this apartment in 1989
Castello di Pastine is like an island. Being on top of an hill, and surrounded by its private park, our estate offers breathtaking views that can not be described in words, and can not get in their entirety in a single photo. You need to come to understand what I mean. The atmosphere is particular. The estate is surrounded by a forest that works as a big lung, offering fresh air every day. The main building is very old, and dates back to 1500. But there is the evidence of Etruscan architecture (700 b.C.), as well as many prehistoric fossils (shells), that reminds us that millions of years ago, Pastine was about 15-30 meters underneath the sea level.
Castello di Pastine was an investment made by the old company of my father, back in the late 80s. At first it looked like the 'sleeping beauty' castle, since it was was surrounded by brambles and ivy-covered. It took many years to restore it. It was open to holiday rentals starting from the mid 90s.
When you get to Pastine you cry two times: when you arrive, and when you depart. You cry when you arrive, because things are different here...we are not perfect, I have to be honest; there are many things here that could work better (in Pastine, and in Italy), or that could be treated in a different way, with a different system. But this is part of the discovery, I guess...of the beauty of traveling, and knowing something different from your home.
Then you will cry when you depart...because after a while you get used to all these little differences and imperfections ... and you begin to love them, since they are the very ones to make this place unique.

Guido and his family are incredibly good hosts who obviously love what they do. They were very easy to deal with, and the apartment was spotless. We arrived late(ish) on Saturday evening and Guido advised us to shop before we arrived to make sure we had provisions - even telling us where to find a convenient supermarket.
Mansarda is dark, being at the top of the building, but since most of our time was spent outside either by the pool, sightseeing or on the roof terrace this really didn't matter. The rooms are very comfortable, though be warned - the two single rooms have very low ceilings.
Castello Di Pastine is easy to find by following Guido's instructions; it's set in very tranquil surroundings and both Florence and Siena are an easy 30-40 minute drive away. San Gimignano is well worth a visit (arrive early to get a parking place!) and of course the pool onsite is a great place to while away the time.
A great place to stay, with very helpful hosts.
We very much enjoyed the location and would stay again. Guido was extremely helpful and the views, sunsets, sunrises, location were all part of a relaxing holiday. We would recommend that gals with long hair bring a hairdryer as none was part of the amenities. If WiFi is important, another apartment than Mansarda might serve you better. All in all, we were very happy.
My girlfriend and I stayed at Castello di Pastine last week. A perfect experience! We were welcomed by Guido after a long drive. Guido answered every question we had about our sightseeing trip into Siena and our plan for biking. He gave us maps and advice for the rest of the days suggesting the right place to see. His maps were better than our GPS on my iPhone!
We were led to the mansarda, beautifully decorated in warm Tuscan colors. The view from the terrace was simply amazing!
After we settled in, Guido told us of a little deli nearby to get some food that we asked about. The dinner at "Il Paese dei Campanelli" was wonderful. We had appetizers, a delicious bistecca and we got a special Chianti wine. We could have stayed there forever.
The next day we experienced our first breakfast in the kitchen, It was lovely! After that the first bike ride: such a wonderful experience. Only few cars and a wonderful sightseeing to Certaldo.
Val d'Elsa is our lovely place to stay and seeing the beautiful Tuscan hills just outside our terrace or from the wonderful garden would have sufficed, but these people, Guido and his family, greatly exceeded our expectations.
I've been several times in Toscana, and this is the only place I'II warmly recommend!
Castello di Pastine is situated in an excellent position a little over 30 km from Florence and Siena, both of which can be reached within half an hour. About 11 km away is the fascinating town of Certaldo, a medieval fortress and the native city of Boccaccio — one of the fathers of Italian literature and the author of the Decameron. San Gimignano, the well-preserved medieval city of towers is just 15 km away, while Volterra, a historic Etruscan city, can be reached driving along 43 km of the most beautiful roads in Tuscany, part of the Volterrana: the legendary road for people who love to drive through the countryside, by car or by bike! Then, if you want to taste or buy some excellent wine, you don’t have to go very far to visit the wine cellars where the most famous red wine in the world is made, Chianti Classico. Throughout the year the Tuscan towns are animated by fairs, festivals, theme-celebrations and historic re-enactments with street markets, suppers, tastings and fireworks.
Other Activities: cooking class, volleyball, sightseeing, air ballooning, wine tasting tours
