We came to Manchester-by-the-Sea after 5 days in New York City. This location was the polar opposite of where we had been. It was perfect for us. After a week in a cramped hotel room, it was excellent for the three of us to have our own space in this lovely home. The two bedrooms were fantastic and it was also nice to have a living room to meet up in for mornings and end of day.The laundry was also a plus. It was great to not have to go home with all dirty clothes!
Maureen was awesome about giving suggestions as to places to go for our needs. She was quick to answer our questions and give information.
This was the perfect location to base our Massachusetts week from. It was an easy drive to Gloucester for our Whale Watch Cruise and to Salem to sail on the Schooner Fame. The house was close to the beach which had incredible sunrises and sunsets. (The mosquitoes however were quite large, so I do suggest that anyone who goes takes insect repellent with them.)
Our family very much enjoyed our stay in this Summer St condo. The unit and entire property were very well taken care of and very clean and it was very well equipped with all quality essentials for a rental. Beach passes were included which was nice. Great location, easy walk into town. Parking is very tight and limited but otherwise we were very satisfied.
Our family really enjoyed our brief stay at 86A School Street. The apartment was recently renovated, had all the conveniences you'd expect and was a short walk to shops, restaurants and the beach...plus the owner was so accommodating and easy to work with. We highly recommend it -- 5 stars!!
The apartment was very clean and wonderful to stay at. Maureen was very nice and always available for questions or concerns! We stayed during the 4th and were able to watch the parade go right by the house. She also put air conditioning units in for us which was great. I would suggest this house to anyone looking to stay in the area.
We booked just two days before we arrived -- and were incredibly glad we did! Maureen is probably the most thoughtful owner we've ever worked with (and we've rented quite a few vacation homes). She arranged for local parking and beach permits, which saved us $45/day. She gave us flowers from her garden when we checked in and later brought a guidebook to local homes and extra blankets (without being asked - simply because she thought it was a bit chilly), made check-out very easy and even mailed us a little gift after we returned home.
The apartment is completely renovated and very clean. The kitchen in particular is just beautiful! I wanted to take it home with me! :) Rental includes dishes, pots and pans, sheets, towels, beach towels and most household supplies such as toilet paper, dishwashing soap and so on. There are a few beach chairs and toys to use if desired. There are window air conditioning units in the two bedrooms, but we never needed them.
We loved Manchester by the Sea! Gorgeous public library, nice grocery store, interesting shops and places to eat. Spotted at the Stock Exchange, a really nice consignment shop: $25 cashmere sweaters, $20 Italian leather shoes, Limoges teacups from Paris--and a fast-changing collection of furniture, paintings, books, jewelry and more. Singing Beach is gorgeous, especially on a sunny day when the water, although cold, sports a stunning shade of blue. (And it's fun to be a "local"!)
We visited the odd little town of Salem, went whale watching leaving from Gloucester, visited Boston, Lexington and Concord, the tourist area of Rockport, Bear Neck - and caught a fantastic jazz concert at the Shalin Liu Performance Center there, where a wall of glass overlooks the harbor. We enjoyed some great sea food and tasty New England dairy products (try Hood ice cream - available at the grocery store - delicious!)
More details: There is only one bathroom, with a sliding door separating the toilet area. The master bedroom (with great king sized bed) is right on the street, so there is traffic noise. You can also hear people from upstairs (high heels or children jumping). It wasn't a problem for us, but if you are noise-sensitive, you might be a bit unhappy. The train station is about 15 min. walk, so it would be possible to get by without a car, but not ideal if you want to travel around as trains are not that frequent.
In summary, we whole-heartedly recommend this lovely apartment and destination!
Myself, husband, seven year old son, and 15 year old niece stayed in this property for five nights in August. It was a stab in the dark of what area to stay in, I just knew I wanted to be north of Boston to tour the Cape Ann area, enjoy the shore and visit Boston one day. I never dreamed it would work out as well as it did.
Maureen, the owner, helped me finalize the plans via email. She was prompt and very easy to work with as we worked around my shift work schedule and other complications (on my end). She had great suggestions for the area and was available for questions or concerns while we were there. She even got us passes to the beach and a temporary resident sticker so we could easily park.
The house was lovely and the city of Manchester, even better. It was a wonderful town with tons of charm. It has a gorgeous beach with great sand, a nice local grocery store, and numerous stores and restaurants. We spent time walking the neighborhood, visiting the harbor, Coolidge Reservation, exploring the almost 50 acres of woods in the preserved powder house area behind the home, and driving to Rockport and Gloucester. I really enjoyed the fact that Manchester had all we needed with out the traffic and congestion of a more 'touristy' area.
The house was super clean (hurray!) and furnished nicely. It was a wonderful treat to come back to a place with nicer furnishings than you would find in a hotel, comfy beds with good sheets and big fluffy towels. The place had everything we needed, and more. I did not expect Maureen to have beach towels for us, but she did. She also had chairs and a few toys for the beach plus a very nice outdoor grill that we cooked on most nights.
The only unexpected thing I found was that it had one toilet and I expected two with a 1.5 bath description. The bathroom has the ability to be split with a sliding door; with the tub and sink on one side, and toilet and small sink on the other. The master bedroom is on the front of the house so you do hear traffic, but it was not a problem for us. The kids shared the room with twin beds, which worked, but we knew we could put someone on the pull out couch if needed. It was nice to not need the couch for sleeping so we had a room to gather in.
It was a great place, coupled with Maureen being so easy to work with, I don't hesitate to recommend this property. I look forward to going back but I will stay for longer than 5 nights, it is a winner!
