About Linda Risley

I grew up and still live on Mount Desert Island. I own Gordius Garage, lobster fish (that's my boat you might see it in the harbor when you stay at Captain's Quarters), ice race in the winter months, and enjoy Nascar.

Why Linda Risley chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

This property sits right on the shore of Bass Harbor where I lobster fish and race in the Bass Harbor Lobster Boat Races. It over looks the harbor and has constantly changing scenery based on the tide! Makes it a unique place to stay with ever changing views and delights. You haven't experienced Maine until you have a fresh cooked lobster sitting on the deck with views that are stunning in every direction. Sunrise and sunset offer quiet times for relaxing. This is the 'Quietside' of Mount Desert Island away from the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor but close enough to enjoy Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor with an easy drive!

What makes this cottage unique

Close to Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor with stunning views of Bass Harbor. Right on the shore with un-obscured views of the ocean and this working harbor!

Very nice location and accomodations

  • 5 of 5

We spent the week there for a "EASTERN" vacation as we live in Colorado. We greatly enjoyed our time there, particularly on the deck. Watching the boats come in and out, watching the tied go in and out, it was great. One must go south of the cottage to the lobster pound and meet the fellow who runs the place. He is right out of a Hemmingway novel!

Fabulous home in a wonderful area with breathtaking view!

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent a week at Captains Quarters and can't recommend it enough. It was so comfortable we had to push ourselves out to explore the park. Loved the gas fire, balcony was wonderful although being the end of season it was cold but that didn't stop us. Linda handled all my enquires efficiently and quickly. The bed was supremely comfortable and waking up to that view each morning was wonderful. We walked to Thurstons and The Ketch and enjoyed the shops in southwest harbor and did a number of good hikes. I would come back in a heart beat and was loathed to leave!

Seen Better Days.. Needs Renovation

  • 2 of 5

Our visit started out rather poorly. We showed up to a house full of cigarette butts and beer cans laying everywhere. Evidently the cleaning lady went on a bender the day we arrived or the night before and didn't bother to clean up after herself. She also left under garments and her cell phone behind. The fact that the cabin is a non-smoking residence was the least of our worries. We also came home one day and found the front door wide open after everyone watched as we locked it when we left. The state police showed up that night and took the report. Fortunately nothing appeared to be missing. I know you're probably thinking we should have gotten some money refunded but no offers were made. There are literally thousands of places to stay in the area so the Captain's Quarters is not one of my recommendations.

Owner's Response: This experience is not typical for our guests (please see our other reviews). We have never experienced this before in the over 50 years of renting this family property and, quite frankly; we’re shocked at both instances. The cleaning person has been let go, and we are gathering information about installing security cameras at the cottages. We reported to the State Police as soon as we learned of the incident. Unfortunately, they were responding to three accidents that night and arrived as soon as they could and apologized for taking so long. We have never dealt with anything like this before and are doing everything we can to insure this doesn’t happen again. We are very sorry for the inconveniences you experienced and thought you were satisfied with your stay outside of these two issues we resolved quickly. We would be happy to discuss some sort of compensation with you if you would like to give us a call.

Great views and proximity to Acadia without the tourists

  • 4 of 5

Great views and location. Sunsets from the deck are unbelievable. Everything there that you need to have a great vacation. Lobstermen start working at 0430 right outside the bedroom.

Great place to stay if planning on hiking Acadia. Close to many trails and not as "touristy" as Bar Harbor.

Captain's Quarters

  • 5 of 5

This is a clean and lovely cottage with windows that take advantage of the lovely water view. The living space is large and extends out to a good size deck complete with rockers and a picnic table. Oversized windows in the living room and master bedroom, along with three skylights and a windowed cupola, keep the entire space bright and fresh. The kitchen is small but functional and well equipped. Though we did no grilling, charcoal was stocked for our use. We appreciated the convenience of a dishwasher, washer and dryer. We were charmed to be greeted with a loaf of locally baked bread and jar of amazing blueberry preserves. After a quick phone call for an address we (and our guests) went to the nearby stand and bought out the preserves. Oh yeah, we treated ourselves to the stand's fresh baked cookies too!

We chose Bass Harbor in order to stay away from the hustle, bustle and traffic of the Bar Harbor side of the island and it worked out perfectly. We easily accessed a lot of hiking trails and entered the carriage trails (to bike) from western parking lots. The ferry to Swan's Island is a short bike ride away and we spent an enjoyable day there. Nearby restaurants and those in Southwest Harbor were quite good. If this sounds like a vacation you'd enjoy, by all means consider Captain's Quarters as your home away from home.
