2 Bedroomed semi-detached rural cottage in a charming village with pool.

The recently (2008) restored semi-detached rural cottage is in a delightful country village, about 45 minutes north of Lisbon easily reached from the main A1 motorway. Located in a typical Ribatejo village with 2 restaurants/cafes, it is ideal for touring central Portugal. There is a small garden with some mature fruit trees (lemon, pomegranate, kaki, walnut) and a magnificent linden tree under which you can spend a lazy summer afternoon by the 6m x 3m swimming pool. There is an open sun deck area with a barbecue and pool shower and a covered area for relaxing or eating outdoors. The house was completely refurbished in 2008 keeping the original façade but the south side of the house is in glass and rustic bricks, which prolongs the kitchen/dining area and the living room into the garden. It is a great location for touring, and Santarém (known as Portugal’s Gothic Capital) is 4km to the South with plenty of shops, cinemas etc and direct motorway link to the beaches 30 minutes away. The cottage is fully licensed with the local Council under the Alojamento Local scheme which ensures compliance with safety standards.

Enjoy a lazy and relaxed afternoon in the hammock by the pool before a soccer table match or a ping pong game with your party. If you prefer some action, nearby there is a small horse riding stable providing lessons and carriage rides or play in one of the several golf courses in the area ( Óbidos - 35 mins, Rio Maior - 30 mins. Campo Real and Bom Sucesso - 50mins and 6 courses in Lisbon - 50 mins.) The beaches are about 30 minutes away however, the journey is very easy with a good motorway link.

Great cottage with excellent facilities. Cottage was clean and tidy. The boys loved the pool and the table tennis was a welcome addition. Lots of shaded space to take a break away from the sun. The locals in the village were extremely friendly, we felt right at home!!! .

Lovely convenient villa in rural Ribatejo

Located in an apparently sleepy village, the villa is ideally placed for the motorway network to get around central Portugal and to Lisbon, and close to the beautiful town of Santarem - there is a wealth of interesting sites to visit nearby. It also turned out less sleepy than it looked, with what seems be the regular village fete at weekends at the nearby square, providing lively local character well into the night if that is what you are seeking!

Helena made us very welcome, and the villa was found in very good order; it is well equipped and perfect for a family of four or two couples, with the pool and all amenities, up to an including table tennis table and baby football, and with plenty of space to spread out. It is great for just relaxing, as a base for sightseeing, has both character and convenience, and can be recommended unreservedly - we shall be going back at some point soon!

Very pleasant and comfortable house

We had a very pleasant and relaxed holiday in this house. The house is very clean and the garden is nice with a lot of shadow. The house is 5 minutes by car from Santarém which is a nice old town with good restaurants.

Lovely holiday in Azoia de Baixo

We spent a delightful 2 week holiday in this gem of a house. It was true to the description, roomy and pleasantly decorated, clean and well maintained. It has everything you need. The garden is a real haven and the pool much apreciated in the summer heat. The village is quiet but easily accessible(you need a car) are the lovely nearby town of Santarem and many other towns, historical sites, the coast and Lisbon. We particularly enjoyed visiting the medieval festival in Obidos and bellyboarding at the coast. This area of Portugal has a lot to offer and the people are pleasant and very helpful, Stay in this house if you want to relax in the sunshine but also like to explore the places Portugal has to offer. You won't be disappointed with either.

Lovely villa - recommended

The villa is situated in a small village near to the town of Santarem and within a short distance of a major motorway junction, so road connections are excellent. Santarem is great with excellent places to eat (down market but very good), a daily farmers market and a biweekly travelling market which sells quality shoes and clothes at bargain prices compared with the UK. The village of Azoia de Baixo is very sleepy with a daily bread van, a cafe which occasionally serves people and not much else. Barking dogs are a nuisance but not enough to spoil the holiday. From the village there are interesting walks in all directions on road and across fields but if your sense of direction is as bad as mine then take a satnav. From Santarem station you can park for free and take the train to Lisbon which is definitely worth doing.

The villa has high walls on all sides, so you're not overlooked, and a great pool. This means swimming costumes are optional! There's a nice place to eat outside and the small garden has a very relaxing feel. Inside the villa everything is as you'd expect with a well equipped kitchen, two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a sizeable lounge. No internet and only four Portuguese language TV channels means this place is not for techno freaks (though my company blackberry worked fine through the cellular network, sadly).

If you want a base to visit and explore central Portugal then this villa is perfect. The only factors which knocked it down from 5 stars were the night time barking dogs, the paucity of activity in the village and a minor problem with the hot water which the owner is now addressing. But none of these things detracted from thoroughly enjoying the holiday and recommending this villa to anybody who wishes to visit this part of Portugal. We'd happily go again.

Santarem cottage great value

We really enjoyed our stay in this lovely cottage. Very light and cool, the pool was brilliant for the children in the hot weather. Friendly village and great place from which to explore Fatima and Lisbon, as well as being only 1 hour from the beach and within easy reach of Santarem and Obidos. Arrangements with Maria Helena were very smooth and she was helpful and available to offer advice. Would thoroughly recommend it.

Perfect summer holiday property

Two families +55, sister & brother.

We spent five wonderful days visiting nearby places. Late afternoons perfect relax on the pool, garden and terrace. Everything clean and well maintained except few corners of the terrace. Accurate pictures and description of the property. Communication with Helena was excellent, many thanks. It is one of the best property which we rented in the last years. We already recommended it to our best friends.

Azoia de Baixo is a perfect location for touring as it is very close to many places of interest like Santarém, Lisbon, Fátima, Óbidos, Tomar and Coimbra inland and Nazaré, Peniche, Aveiro etc. on the cost, all within 1 hour driving. Porto is also only 2 hours drive away, and the Algarve has direct motorway access and is about 3 hours away. Santarém also has very good train connections and the trip to Lisbon only takes 45m which enabling day visits.The cottage is in the Ribatejo region, on the Tagus river north of Lisbon. It is known for its farming, horses, bull-fighting and wine production but is also a region steeped in historical monuments. The countryside is ideal for walking and cycling. This is not an area of mass tourism. The people in this region are very friendly and you are assured of a warm welcome. The regional food is excellent. There are open markets every weekend somewhere close by, and the towns have large supermarkets and all the likely needs for your stay

Other Activities: bird watching, grottos, Jurassic area, open salt mines.

The house is suitable for children although the pool is NOT fenced - parents should bear this in mind if considering bringing small children. For those with mobility problems, please note that access to the garden is by small two steps. The rest of the property is on one level. The garden furniture comprises a teak table and 6 chairs, pool lounging beds and chairs. The garden has an automatic irrigation system and the property is walled, providing privacy. Please bring your own towels for use in the pool or on the beach. The pool is 6m x 3m and 1.20m deep. There is an attractive old well, which is duly protected. The property will be cleaned at the end of a week and towels and linen will then be changed. Please note that clothes and dishwater detergent and toiletries are not provided. The grass and pool will be looked after on a fixed day each week. Please abstain from smoking inside the property.
