HONOLULU AIRPORT 45 MINUTES - We are located approximately 45 minutes from Honolulu International Airport and Pearl Harbor and 60 minutes from Waikiki.
NORTH SHORE LOCATION - Hau'ula is on the North Eastern shore of Oahu, where the magical, evergreen, Ko'olau Mountains reach up to tickle the clouds and down into the sparkling, blue Pacific Ocean. The small, remote Hau'ula community (4,000 people) of single family homes, small shops (Chings Store- gift store is a great local treasure!), and local-style restaurants (Papa Ole's, Korean BBQ, North Shore Taco's), is very different from the high rise, busy retail tourism center of Waikiki. Hau'ula truly offers a glimpse of old Hawaii, slower paced , peaceful, with friendly people... with one of the largest Hawaiian/Polynesian communities on the island.
HAWAIIAN-STYLE GUEST HOUSE & GARDENS - We are confident that you will enjoy our Hawaiian-style hales, tropical gardens, fish ponds and remote, peaceful, country location.

We are retired and have lived in Hauula 25 years. We purchased this unique and beautiful property with two homes and slowly made repairs and improvements to the homes and the property. In fact, this renovation process never seems to end! We live in one home full-time and rent the Ko'olau Guest House. The guest house is a Hawaiian, local style home that we have made improvements to provide privacy and lush tropical gardens that surround each hale. Our goal is to provide hales that are quiet and peaceful havens that fulfill the promise of beauty and aloha of Hawaii for our guests to enjoy. We love greeting our guests and making sure they are happy and comfortable during their stay. We try to offer our knowledge of our place that makes your visit here a wonderful, magical experience. We make a lot of new friends along the way and host people from all over the world.
Dotty Kelly purchased this estate in 1993
Hau'ula is a village with 'real people' ... a truly spiritual place, on the ocean, with the most beautiful, private beaches in Hawaii. Hau'ula is home to many Native Hawaiians and other Polynesians. Ko'olau Country Gardens Guest House is located high on the hillside of the Ko'olau Mountains overlooking the small town of Hau'ula with spectacular views of the Pacific. There's not a better location on earth...we love it! We chose to live in Hau'ula because of it's people, weather, natural beauty and location...far away from the crowds of Waikiki and Honolulu. The pace is slower, life is more informal and people are good friends and neighbors.
The property is agricultural with many tropical fruit trees we have planted on rockwall terraces. We have papaya, apple banana, breadfruit, coconut, star fruit, grapefruit, fig, logan, lichee, mango, orange, lemon, lime, chico, avocado and mountain apple. This is a great place to learn about tropical agriculture and plants.
I have not stayed at or viewed any of these two properties. We have decided on something else instead of the Koi Pond Hale. I am giving a review of the owner , Dotty. I emailed her recently to rent the Koi Pond Hale. There is a group of us who are coming to visit Hawaii. This email was followed up by a few phone calls . She was extremely courteous, patient , helpful and all around pleasant person. I had some trouble getting her emails and she patiently stayed on the phone with me while I searched for them. She went above and beyond to answer all of our questions about the unit. She also provided us with many helpful tips about traveling the Hawaiian Islands , what we may need to bring and what to expect while we are there.
I am writing this review because while searching for a unit I have encountered many rude owners who just want your money and just don't care about you , your stay, your question or their rental. So I like to give positive people the praise they deserve. It is always to easy to only complain all the time . Thank you for all your help Dotty. We really appreciate it.
After spending 5 days in Honolulu, it was such a pleasure to arrive at Koolau Country Gardens. The drive up was beautiful! We stayed in the Hibiscus Hale, and it was just as advertised. Being able to sleep with the doors open, listening to the birds and the rain, and having that wonderful breeze was pure relaxation. The screened lanai is now my "happy place" when I think of my time on Oahu! We took a helicopter ride out of Turtle Bay, spent a day at the Polynesian Cultural Center, drove to Waimea Valley and shopped in Hale'iwa. Dotty was great to work with, and made our trip planning less stressful. Having a washer and dryer was nice, no packing dirty laundry home! I would most certainly stay here again. Mahalo
I'm sad that I only get 2500 characters to write about our stay at the Koolau Country Gardens. Although the floorplan is a bit quirky and the bedrooms are a bit small, the beautiful lanai of the Hibiscus Hale and the personal attention from the owners Dotty and Peter Paddock more than made up for what the unit was lacking in space. The lanai looks out over an acre of well-groomed gardens, with an unobstructed view of the ocean. At night you can hear the waves crashing against the beach. Dotty and Peter went the extra mile in every possible way to make sure our stay was comfortable and pleasant. They live nearby and provided lots of helpful suggestions for interesting things to do and places to see. They don't throw away little things left behind by other guests like sunscreen and insect repellant so that these items are available for the next guest to use if needed. They thought of everything to make our stay comfortable. They provided boogie boards, noodles, beach umbrellas and sand toys for our grandchildren! The lanai was large and comfortable. We ate all of our meals there in the peaceful atmosphere with the ocean breezes blowing through the three-sided screened-in porch The location was perfect for the places we wanted to visit. It was close to the Polynesian Cultural Center, the LDS Hawaii Temple, BYU Hawaii Campus, and the North Shore. Though the bathroom was small, it was adequate. Those looking for a five-star hotel should go to Waikiki Beach. We loved the small-town feel of Hau'ula. The drive along the Kamehameha Highway was beautiful! On mornings when it rained, we sat in the lanai and breathed in the clean air, while watching the waves crash on the ocean shore. It is a short three-minute drive from the ocean with nearby parks and beaches perfect for a family outing. It seemed to be a beach where only locals visited, which was perfect for us - uncrowded and peaceful! If you are looking to get away from the crowds and the commercial tourist places and see Hawaii in its natural beauty with unspoiled vistas, the Koolau Country Gardens in the place for you. The Hibiscus Hale is the room to get with the lanai that looks out over the ocean. We give this place 5 and 1/2 stars!
My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights with our young daughter in the Hibiscus Hale. It is a quaint room with everything you need. Although there was AC in the living room area, we did not need it this time of year. With the fans and opening the windows, it stayed relatively cool. The beds were firm (more than we are used to) but we still slept great. We would definitely stay here again since it is a very affordable accommodation. It was so nice to have our own kitchen while traveling with a little one. Dotty was even kind enough to ensure we had a pack n play as well as a high chair!
We stayed at the Hibiscus Hale and had a wonderful time. It was close to the places we wanted to visit and the view and scenery was amazing! The beds were very comfortable and the necessities in the kitchen were even more than what we needed.
When I got home I realized I'd lost my wedding rings and Dotty sent Peter over to scour the place to look for them, to no avail. I must have lost them elsewhere. But that was so nice of them to do the search!
What a perfect place for our family. We stayed at the Hale Hibiscus and had a wonderful Lani where we ate with our family with a gorgeous view of the ocean and the countryside. We were so close to all the places we wanted to visit...the Polynesian Cultural Center, the LDS Temple, BYU Hawaii, Turtle Bay, The Dole Plantation. The beautiful drive along the north shore to all our destinations was an event in itself. Dotty was a great hostess and we had everything that we needed to make our vacation wonderful. The sound of the birds in the morning and the clean, quiet country atmosphere was priceless.
