Hauula Estate Rental Photos and Description

Koolau Country Gardens - Hawaiian Style Hales (2 and 3 bedrm)

SPECTACULAR TWO ACRE PROPERTY - Koolau Country Gardens is a magical hillside property in the Koolau Mountains, 2 minutes to beautiful, quiet, sandy beaches for swimming, snorkeling and surfing on the famous North Shore of Oahu.

OCEAN VIEWS - Koolau Country Gardens provides views of the blue Pacific, the majestic Koolau Mountains, soothing waterfalls, koi ponds and rock-wall terraces and tropical fruit trees and gardens.

3-5 MINUTES TO BEACH - Located on the Koolau Mountain hillside, only a short 3-5 minute walk to Hau'ula beach, it's the perfect location to enjoy lovely, sandy beaches for sunning and snorkeling, surfing. We even provide snorkel gear, boogie boards and beach chairs for our guests! Just ask us!

POLYNESIAN CULTURAL CENTER 5 MINUTES- Polynesian Cultural Center is 5 minutes away. A great way to spend the whole day visiting all the islands of Polynesia!

TWO PRIVATE GUEST UNITS - Koolau Country Gardens has two private guest hales (Hawaiian word for 'place to live' pronounced like "holly") that are available year-round . The Hibiscus Hale, 2 bdrm/1 bathroom, comfortably accommodates 4 people for $130 per night + tax + a one-time cleaning fee. The Koi Pond Hale, 3 bdrms/1 bathroom, accommodates up to 6-7 people for $160 per night + tax + a one-time cleaning fee.

LOCATED IN HAU'ULA - Ko'olau Country Gardens is located in Hau'ula, Hawaii, a small, ancient, fishing and taro-growing village on Oahu's North Shore. Hau'ula has the most beautiful, sandy beaches and no crowds!!

POPULAR ATTRACTIONS NEARBY - Turtle Bay Resort (beach, surfing, snorkeling and restaurants) the famous Roy's Beach Restaurant is now open at Turtle Bay Resort, Waimea Valley (botanical gardens, gift shop, restaurant and awesome waterfall), Macadamia Nut Outlet at Kualoa Farms (gift shops, cultural shows), Sunset Beach (big wave surfing), Pipeline, Haleiwa town (shopping and dining), Kualoa Ranch (horseback riding and movie tours, gift shop, restaurant), Gunstock Ranch (horseback riding), Hau'ula Loop Trail (great hiking trail), Kokololio Beach (sunning and snorkeling) and "Alligator Pond"(protected swimming pond for young children/keiki on south end of the park), Pounders Beach (boogie boarding), Chinaman's Hat (Mokoli'li Island), Bodo Temple (Japanese Temple), Kahana Bay (beach park), Kahana Valley (state park, hiking trails) and many other wonderful North Shore attractions.

HONOLULU AIRPORT 45 MINUTES - We are located approximately 45 minutes from Honolulu International Airport and Pearl Harbor and 60 minutes from Waikiki.

NORTH SHORE LOCATION - Hau'ula is on the North Eastern shore of Oahu, where the magical, evergreen, Ko'olau Mountains reach up and tickle the clouds and flow down into the sparkling, blue Pacific. The small, remote Hau'ula community (4,500 people) of single family homes, small shops (Chings Store- gift store is a great local treasure!), and local-style restaurants (Papa Ole's, Korean BBQ, North Shore Taco's), is very different from the high rise, busy retail tourism center of Waikiki. Hau'ula truly offers a glimpse of old Hawaii, slower paced , peaceful, with friendly people... with one of the largest Hawaiian/Polynesian communities on the island.

HAWAIIAN-STYLE GUEST HOUSE & GARDENS - We are confident that you will enjoy our Hawaiian-style hales, tropical gardens, fish ponds and remote, peaceful, country location.

Koolau Country Gardens has all the amenities at no extra cost, including spectacular ocean and mountain views, spacious private lanais with gas grills.

OFF STREET PARKING RESERVED - Reserved parking for 2 cars per unit ( no charge)

HOME GROWN FRUIT & FISHPONDS - Tropical fruit trees and fish may want to enjoy the ripe fruit when in season, just ask!

BEACH STUFF - We also provide beach towels, beach seats, boogie boards, beach chairs and snorkeling gear, just let us know!

FAMILY FRIENDLY - We provide a high chair, pack n play and sand toys too! Our grassy green, makai lawn has a swing set with a slide for our visiting keiki (children).

MAKAI LANAI - We created a new gathering area we call the "Makai (Ocean) Lanai" on the lower lawn. It's a lovely spot for small gatherings of 6-20 people. The Makai Lanai is furnished with table and chairs and a gas grill for barbecues. Please let us know if you want to reserve the Makai Lanai for your private gathering. There is no extra charge. The Makai Lanai is restricted for registered guests only.

PEACEFUL GETAWAY - The private, peaceful location of our Ko'olau guest house offers a sanctuary, hidden away from other homes and traffic noises. At Ko'olau Country Gardens you can experience the ocean breezes and hear the sounds of the waves coaxing you to relax and enjoy the magic of this unique, tropical paradise we call Hawaii.

OWNERS LIVE ONSITE - At Ko'olau Country Gardens the owners live onsite. We are family-friendly and love sharing our knowledge of plants, our gardens, local sites and attractions.

OUR GOAL - Our primary goal is to ensure that your visit to our home and gardens is filled with Aloha...the real magic of Hawaii.

We believe your stay at Ko'olau Country Gardens will be an unforgettable experience because of the beauty, peace and closeness to nature...a truly unique Hawaiian experience.

About Dotty Kelly

We are retired and have lived in Hauula 25 years. We purchased this unique and beautiful property with two homes and slowly made repairs and improvements to the homes and the property. In fact, this renovation process never seems to end! We live in one home full-time and rent the Ko'olau Guest House. The guest house is a Hawaiian, local style home that we have made improvements to provide privacy and lush tropical gardens that surround each hale. Our goal is to provide hales that are quiet and peaceful havens that fulfill the promise of beauty and aloha of Hawaii for our guests to enjoy. We love greeting our guests and making sure they are happy and comfortable during their stay. We try to offer our knowledge of our place that makes your visit here a wonderful, magical experience. We make a lot of new friends along the way and host people from all over the world.

Dotty Kelly purchased this estate in 1993

Why Dotty Kelly chose North Shore Oahu

Hau'ula is a village with 'real people' ... a truly spiritual place, on the ocean, with the most beautiful, private beaches in Hawaii. Hau'ula is home to many Native Hawaiians and other Polynesians. Ko'olau Country Gardens Guest House is located high on the hillside of the Ko'olau Mountains overlooking the small town of Hau'ula with spectacular views of the Pacific. There's not a better location on earth...we love it! We chose to live in Hau'ula because of it's people, weather, natural beauty and location...far away from the crowds of Waikiki and Honolulu. The pace is slower, life is more informal and people are good friends and neighbors.

What makes this estate unique

The property is agricultural with many tropical fruit trees we have planted on rockwall terraces. We have papaya, apple banana, breadfruit, coconut, star fruit, grapefruit, fig, logan, lichee, mango, orange, lemon, lime, chico, avocado and mountain apple. This is a great place to learn about tropical agriculture and plants.

Wonderful Place

  • 5 of 5

Last month we visited Oahu with a group of 11. We were there to celebrate our one year anniversary as well as visit a friend who lives on the North Shore. The beginning of our trip was a bit rocky as we missed our flight and missed a day, but Dotty was helpful through all of it. We stayed in both rentals and Dotty made sure that our groceries were all put away before we arrived, and everything was set for us to just relax when we got there. The property is off the beaten path a bit so you are out of the hustle and bustle of the city but a short to minute walk to the beach. Located in a small town and everyone seems very friendly. When you tell the locals where you have chose to stay every one of them told us what a great selection that was and you cant find a better place than Hauula. My husband and i had a bad renting experience on our honeymoon so I was a bit hesitant at first to rent another house but so happy that I did.

Owner Review

  • 5 of 5

I have not stayed at or viewed any of these two properties. We have decided on something else instead of the Koi Pond Hale. I am giving a review of the owner , Dotty. I emailed her recently to rent the Koi Pond Hale. There is a group of us who are coming to visit Hawaii. This email was followed up by a few phone calls . She was extremely courteous, patient , helpful and all around pleasant person. I had some trouble getting her emails and she patiently stayed on the phone with me while I searched for them. She went above and beyond to answer all of our questions about the unit. She also provided us with many helpful tips about traveling the Hawaiian Islands , what we may need to bring and what to expect while we are there.

I am writing this review because while searching for a unit I have encountered many rude owners who just want your money and just don't care about you , your stay, your question or their rental. So I like to give positive people the praise they deserve. It is always to easy to only complain all the time . Thank you for all your help Dotty. We really appreciate it.

Perfect place to stay while visiting the North Shore area

  • 5 of 5

After spending 5 days in Honolulu, it was such a pleasure to arrive at Koolau Country Gardens. The drive up was beautiful! We stayed in the Hibiscus Hale, and it was just as advertised. Being able to sleep with the doors open, listening to the birds and the rain, and having that wonderful breeze was pure relaxation. The screened lanai is now my "happy place" when I think of my time on Oahu! We took a helicopter ride out of Turtle Bay, spent a day at the Polynesian Cultural Center, drove to Waimea Valley and shopped in Hale'iwa. Dotty was great to work with, and made our trip planning less stressful. Having a washer and dryer was nice, no packing dirty laundry home! I would most certainly stay here again. Mahalo

Wonderful place to stay with or without children!

  • 5 of 5

I'm sad that I only get 2500 characters to write about our stay at the Koolau Country Gardens. Although the floorplan is a bit quirky and the bedrooms are a bit small, the beautiful lanai of the Hibiscus Hale and the personal attention from the owners Dotty and Peter Paddock more than made up for what the unit was lacking in space. The lanai looks out over an acre of well-groomed gardens, with an unobstructed view of the ocean. At night you can hear the waves crashing against the beach. Dotty and Peter went the extra mile in every possible way to make sure our stay was comfortable and pleasant. They live nearby and provided lots of helpful suggestions for interesting things to do and places to see. They don't throw away little things left behind by other guests like sunscreen and insect repellant so that these items are available for the next guest to use if needed. They thought of everything to make our stay comfortable. They provided boogie boards, noodles, beach umbrellas and sand toys for our grandchildren! The lanai was large and comfortable. We ate all of our meals there in the peaceful atmosphere with the ocean breezes blowing through the three-sided screened-in porch The location was perfect for the places we wanted to visit. It was close to the Polynesian Cultural Center, the LDS Hawaii Temple, BYU Hawaii Campus, and the North Shore. Though the bathroom was small, it was adequate. Those looking for a five-star hotel should go to Waikiki Beach. We loved the small-town feel of Hau'ula. The drive along the Kamehameha Highway was beautiful! On mornings when it rained, we sat in the lanai and breathed in the clean air, while watching the waves crash on the ocean shore. It is a short three-minute drive from the ocean with nearby parks and beaches perfect for a family outing. It seemed to be a beach where only locals visited, which was perfect for us - uncrowded and peaceful! If you are looking to get away from the crowds and the commercial tourist places and see Hawaii in its natural beauty with unspoiled vistas, the Koolau Country Gardens in the place for you. The Hibiscus Hale is the room to get with the lanai that looks out over the ocean. We give this place 5 and 1/2 stars!

Excellent place for a family

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights with our young daughter in the Hibiscus Hale. It is a quaint room with everything you need. Although there was AC in the living room area, we did not need it this time of year. With the fans and opening the windows, it stayed relatively cool. The beds were firm (more than we are used to) but we still slept great. We would definitely stay here again since it is a very affordable accommodation. It was so nice to have our own kitchen while traveling with a little one. Dotty was even kind enough to ensure we had a pack n play as well as a high chair!

We stayed at the Koi Pond Hale and loved it. I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else. We loved escaping the tourism of Waikiki and enjoying the paradise and culture the Windward Coast offered. I loved wandering the property at sunrise and sunset. The homestead ambience is perfectly captured here. Everything you might need is provided and you are close to the beach, Polynesian Cultural Center, and North Shore. We never interacted with the property owners. It wasn't required. It's nice to feel like you have privacy, but that they are available whenever you may need them.
