Not Quite What We Expected

  • 2 of 5

We were looking for a secluded cabin in Northern Michigan to spend with our dog who doesn't get much of a chance to run in our apartment complex. She loves the beach so this rental seemed perfect.

Unfortunately, this is packed in to houses on all sides (the pictures don't show this well). The beach is TINY and was packed with locals. The photo of the beach is the entire beach. Also, dogs aren't allowed on the beach. The cottage isn't on the lake, so views aren't great either (there is another row of houses between the lake and this cottage).

The yard is mostly dirt and there was dog waste around from what I assume to be a previous renter. Most of the beds were unmade with all of the bedding on the floor, so we weren't sure if they had been cleaned or not. We also used the grill, but it had tons of bugs in it. It took some work to clean them out and get it ready to use (igniter doesn't work, must use lighter or match).

There is no AC (or if there is, it wasn't working) and we had serious trouble trying to cool the place down. Even with doors open and fans blowing out we couldn't get the temp to drop under the high 70s even when it was in the 60s at night. Luckily, there are plenty of fans to keep you cool.

Colleen was very friendly and accommodating before the trip, and we were only there for a single night so we didn't bring up any issues during the stay.

This would be a decent place to stay if you wanted to use it as a "home base" to visit the surrounding areas... we often stay on Torch Lake and in Traverse City and there are a ton of beautiful areas to visit within an hour or so. However, you'd probably be better off staying closer to those areas. Kalkaska (the city about 5 miles away) provides a good place to grocery shop if needed, but that's about it. I would not recommend coming here as a "destination." There simply isn't much to do.

The home itself is not bad. Technically you could sleep 8 people here, but it would be very crowded. The kitchen was very clean and for the most part so was the rest of the house. The DVDs were a nice thing to be able to do a at night (there was absolutely zero cell service and no wi-fi... which is fine for a vacation house, but it's been so long since I've been to a house without it!).

Unfortunately, this home wasn't for us... but I appreciate the owner's flexibility and helpfulness when we were planning our stay.

Had a wonderful visit. Colleen was very accommodating and very responsive. I would stay again if I needed. No cable but lots of movies. Who goes up north to watch tv anyway?

Incredibly unsatisfactory. Spider infested and could not drink or use the water! NO GOOD.

  • 1 of 5

We bathed and drank and brushed our teeth with bottled water b/c of sewage smell from the well. The water coming out of the faucets was not usable and drinkable. My dad literally got sick and a fever after attempting to drink the water. We killed probably 7-8 spiders while we were there a short time and lots of webs. Oddly enough my brother while sitting on the couch reading the book that people sign when staying etc. saw that we were not the only ones that had spider trouble while being there. Would not recommend the house or the owner and would suggest finding somewhere else to stay. Plus no cell service-so no way to call the owner and let her know about any issues while at the house.

Owner's Response: I immediately took the 4 hour drive to cheek out this complaint. There was no sewage smell. (When cottage is first opened there can be a slight musty smell because it's by the water, but that goes away) The water was the same as always. (It is well water) We use it all the time; no one has ever complained before or has gotten sick. I did not see any spiders either, but know that this is a Cottage, and we are by the lake. I contacted VRBO and reported on this renter because of threats made.

the cottage

  • 3 of 5

The cottage has some nice decorative touches like the head of a rake as a rack for cooking utensils. A nice quilt covering the sofa, wicker rocking chair. The area is very quiet. The lake is quiet. We enjoyed the peacefulness. The kitchen is very well equipped for cooking. The size was perfect for 2 people even though there are 3 bedrooms and you can sleep 8. With 1 bathroom, I think that would be difficult. I would like to recommend a new carpet in the living/dining area. Other than that improvement, we enjoyed our stay.

Not Bad, Not Great, Very Clean

  • 3 of 5

The cottage is a really nice place where you feel at home. It was very well kept but basic. It's not on the water but you can see the lake in between the houses across the road. The purpose of our trip was to go fishing. The rowboat had no anchor and was too small for the choppy lake most of the weekend. I specifically asked about boat rentals in the area but received no response. We ended up driving from Charlevoix to Traverse City to Elk Rapids trying to find some "shore" spots to fish. The cottage was just a nice cozy house to sleep, and one night had a little campfire out back. The entertainment during the campfire was the loud neighbors across the way. Definitely has the "cottage" feel.

We left new logs in the fire pit for the next guests.

I'd stay there again

  • 4 of 5

The cabin was nice to stay in. It was clean and warm. There were four things that would have made it better. I found out when I got there that trash bags, towels and dvd player weren't furnished. The driveway wasn't plowed so we had to park on road. All in all everything worked out okay. I'd use it again.

Owner's Response: Hi Gordon. I'm so sorry about the misunderstanding about the drive, so I have refunded you a free night stay. We had a bad storm up there, and I lost my fridge, microwave and DVD player. I have replace the fridge and microwave, but I still need to bring a new DVD player up. Sorry. Hope you enjoyed the VCR! Towels are not provided (In contract), but you should have had garbage bags; I will look into that. Hope you come stay again. Take care Colleen
