About the property

Farmhouse, 3 Bedrooms , one bathroom. over looking Tlell river and meadows

A completly equiped three bedroom heritage farmhouse with an adult focus, located on the Richardson Ranch. This special place on the banks of the Tlell river is an easy walk to the beach.

This comfy littlle house is a labour of love, it was our Grampa and gramma's farm house. We have given it a face lift but have left the charm intact. We encourage our guests to poke around , open cupboards and draws, use Gramma's old cook books, play the guitar you find by the couch or do one of her jigsaw puzzles. Pick fresh herbs or vegetables from the garden, enjoy a feed of farm fresh eggs or catch a salmon or trout before breakfast. Walk to the beach to pick agates, explore the tidal pools or watch the Sandhill Cranes dance.

If your into cows, we raise polled Hereford cattle, often seen grazing from the kitchen window.

The house is fully functional with electric range, microwave and fridge along with a complete set of dishes, spices and linens. It can comfortably sleep five in two queen and one double bed. One bathroom with shower and the origional clawfoot tub may be the limiting factor! There is a washer and dryer in the house for your conveniance. Satelite TV and DVD player are provided for your entertainment. WiFi is now in house.

Located on the paved Highway 16, nearly half way between Skidegate ferry terminal and Masset, this site is ideal for ventureing out to explore both ends of Haida Gwaii.

Peaceful

OMG what a beautiful treasure!!!! We arrived and fell in love with your little peace of heaven. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would come back in a heartbeat. Peaceful setting to regroup and relax....so hard to leave. Thank you for sharing your farm with us. Loved watching nature at the doorstep. The cottage is amazing and had the best sleep on the whole vacation here. The fresh eggs were fabulous too. I would highly recommend this treasure to anyone looking for a comfortable place to relax. I can't say enough good things about the place. Grandpa's Guesthouse was like a home away from home. Thanks Leslie & Don

Amazing for Families!

  • 5 of 5

I honestly can’t imagine a more perfect rental for a family, on Haida Gwaii. The Tlell river is truly on your doorstep, and the ocean is just a few minutes’ walk away. Ranchers Don and Leslie are the nicest hosts you could ever have, and gave our 6 year-old ranch experiences she’ll never forget – helping to move cattle from pasture to pasture, feeding the horses, pony rides, collecting eggs from the chickens, running amok with the farm cats, fishing in the river, riding in a row boat, and more. The guest house is an original farmhouse from the early 20th century. It brings back memories for any of us who had family that used to farm, and yet all the modern conveniences are available, in humble measure (e.g. wireless access for us technology addicts, but don’t expect lightening speeds). I’ll never forget drinking wine out in front of the house, watching the sun set over the river, and having the horses meander over to “nose in” on what we were up to (the horses are often “free-range” and make great lawn mowers). For those of you that love natural beauty and can appreciate the priceless opportunity to share with your children what a working ranch is really like (cow pies and all!), I cannot recommend the ranch highly enough. The ranch is also mid-island and make for a great base camp for exploring all of what Haida Gwaii has to offer.

Tranquility

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four (including two children aged 11 and 14 years) have just returned from a vacation on Haida Gwaii. We were fortunate to stay at Grampa's Guesthouse for part of journey to this wondrous area. The Guesthouse has been tastefully updated, in part at least, by a talented local woodworker. It is clean, well equipped, and comfortable, including the beds. Its setting on the property is idyllic, with kitchen and living room windows overlooking the river and fields and the trees beyond them. Farm fresh eggs were a treat, as were the freshly baked cookies that magically appeared in the kitchen when we were out walking the beach our first morning after arriving, the recipe for which Leslie, our welcoming host, generously shared with us. Simply put, we were revitalized by our stay and will happily return here if the opportunity arises again. We travelled to Haida Gwaii by ferry with a vehicle, but even without a vehicle, there is much to do within walking or easy cycling distance of Richardson Ranch.

Amazing and relaxing guesthouse

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had the privilege of staying at this wonderful property for 3 nights and we highly recommend this guesthouse to family and friends. We enjoyed the quaintness of Grampa's guesthouse and felt right at home. The atmosphere took us back to earlier years on the farm. We enjoyed the fresh farm eggs that were provided and also enjoyed picking fresh greens for our salad. Leslie brought us over a delicious homemade oil/balsamic dressing and I was so happy she shared the recipe with me. We also picked up some delicious steaks (Richardson Ranch) at Crow's store down the road that were excellent.

The bed was very comfortable and it was so quiet and peaceful on the property. From the kitchen window there was a beautiful view of the Tlell river and the cattle grazing. On the other side of the highway which is an easy walk is the beautiful beach where you could walk for miles if you are so inclined.

The Richardson's lifestlyle is inspiring! From the Purebred Polled Herefords they raise, Vet Clinic, Pet/Feed Store, Kennel and Guesthouse Accomodations they provide is amazing. Leslie was never far away if we needed anything and she was very accommodating. We will treasure the memories! Thank you!

Holiday in paradise!

  • 5 of 5

I just got back home from a 1 month holiday on the Richardson Ranch in Tlell. It is seriously the best place I`ve ever been. The landscape is breathtaking. You have a river packed with cutthroats, Stealheads and Coho (in fall), you`got a beautiful beach and the rainforest, all within a few minutes to walk. There`s mountains, nice small towns (I can recommend Queen Charlotte), unbelievable Hiking Trails (check out the Anvil Trail!) and we even went octopus hunting. Since we travelled without a car we went shopping at "Crow`s nest" a small shop/coffee-house located in Tlell, a 30 minute walk by the beach. You`ll find all you need for your everyday-life there and they make a delicious cheese cake. The Richardsons are the friendliest, nicest people you can imagine, very helpful whenever they can, and an excellent food deliverer also. Check out the beef jerky they sell in their shop!!! Also I ate the best steak I ever had. I bought it from them, and even though I cooked it myself it was unbelievable, and I am seriously not the best cook... ;-) The house is great too, sleeps easily 6 people, is very clean and comfortable. It is perfectly equipped, you`ll find all you need. You wake up to the sounds of nature and have your coffee while sitting in the front yard, watching the beautiful River Tlell. I can totally recommend this place!

Wonderful Week :D

  • 5 of 5

I just returned from a wonderful week at Grandpa's Guesthouse. I felt like I had stepped back in time. The old ranch house was beautifully renovated, keeping the old fashioned styling yet had all the up to date amenities. I don't think I have ever slept so well. After spending the day walking along the beach, snooping through the local stores or just enjoying the fresh air, it was heavenly to crawl under the down comforter on a comfortable bed. All the beds even had homemade patchwork quilts. The kitchen was fully equipped for cooking and the BBQ was lovely for BBQing.

I highly recommend Grandpa's Guesthouse to anyone looking for a quiet get away to relax. BC Ferries and town is a short 35 min drive away. A small local stores is 5 min away for day to day food needs, and a hit of espresso too. The house is very quiet and comfortable. Perfect for reading on the couch or taking a well deserved nap. There was a TV with satellite but we never had a chance to make use of it. Too much relaxing to do. :)

The family was very welcoming and helpful. They are a wealth of information about the history of the ranch and activities to do in the area. They were also open to answering any and all my nosy questions in regards to the running of the cattle ranch. We had a blast watching the baby calves running through the fields. Way too cute! Farm fresh eggs was a nice treat as well.

I will most definitely be coming back again next year. I didn't want my week to end.
