About Fiona Koops
My husband and I have lived in East Sussex for the past 30 years where we run our own small building business, specialising in the renovation and restoration of historic and listed buildings.
Fiona Koops purchased this House in 2001
Why Fiona Koops chose Escueillens-et-Saint-Just-de-Bélengard
Friends introduced us to this very special part of France many years ago and we immediately fell in love with it. We were very lucky to find Les Lavandieres in Escueillens and bought the house from a delightful French family who we have kept in touch with over the years. The house has a lovely feel to it and has become a very happy second home for our family where we have enjoyed many happy family holidays during the last 16 years. We have made many improvements to the house and garden in order to create a comfortable home from home which we are delighted to share with our guests. We hope that you will appreciate and enjoy the house as much as we do.
What makes this House unique
We love the fact that the house is in the heart of the village and yet you can enjoy real peace and tranquility as well as the spectacular rolling countryside that surrounds it with all the vineyards and fields of sunflowers. There are beautiful walks in the surrounding countryside and the famous GR7 path passes right by our village on its way down to Spain. On a clear day the views of the Pyrenees are breathtaking, particularly in early spring when they are still covered in snow.

Great place to holiday.
The property was perfect for our family. It was clean, nicely decorated and the boys loved having a pool. The village was lovely with very little noise.
For the second time we had a terrific vacation in Escueillens. The house is not only charming but also very well equipped.
Another lovely stay
We have visited this lovely home 3 times now and it is as good as ever. The house is situated in a peaceful local village and when we visit in June the sun is always in the garden. The garden really is a sun trap and the pool was a lovely temperature. The house is very well maintained and has everything you could need. A bread van also visits the village most days now. We look forward to visiting again!
Lovely home in a traditional quiet village
Recently returned from a lovely stay in this beautiful traditional house. Everything was as described by the owner and the house was immaculately clean and the pool well maintained. The house is very well equipped and there is nothing missing. The very private garden area is a sun trap and is protected from any breeze. The village was very peaceful and quiet. Although there is no shop in the village this probably helped keep it so quiet and it was only a short drive to the excellent baker in the nearby village which also had a shop (open Sunday mornings) and a pleasant pizza restaurant. The house is very well located with many amenities within 20 minutes. We especially enjoyed visiting the market in Mirepoix and for a longer journey (2 hours) we would highly recommend a trip to Andorra where the duty free prices have to be seen to be believed! We look forward to having the chance to visit again.
We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay and hope very much that you will return again soon.
Beautiful home in small friendly village
The house was even better than described, with large rooms, comfortable beds with gorgeous linen and a great outdoor area by the pool. There is everything you could need for a fabulous relaxing holiday. Spotlessly clean and beautifully furnished, the house was a delight. A nearby village has a bakery and the towns of Mirapoix and Limoux have great markets and restaurants. We couldn't find a coffee within walking distance but Fiona has all the makings in the house. A great holiday.
Thank you so much for your very kind review and we are delighted that you were so happy with the house and had such a wonderful holiday. I hope very much that you will return one day.
Les Lavandières is a typically French end of terrace house in the heart of this pretty hilltop village situated in the heart of some of the loveliest scenery in this region known as the Razés. The village of Escueillens is situated in the Aude and our house offers you a comfortable and warm welcome, providing an ideal base from which to explore this beautiful and very varied part of France. With the two World Heritage Sites of Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi within 30 minutes drive of the house, whether it is boating on the Canal du Midi, cycling or walking through some of the most beautiful countryside in France, canoeing down the river Aude, exploring this land steeped in heritage, or relaxing on the beach and swimming in the warm Mediterranean, you will find all this and more in the Aude region. For keen walkers, there are plenty of beautiful walks locally and for those who prefer to cycle, bicycles are available to hire locally. For those who enjoy sailing, boats are available to hire at Lac de Montbel to the south or Lac de la Ganguise near Castelnaudary. You are ideally placed to visit the incredible fortified city of Carcassonne (about 25 mins), Montsegur and other Cathar mountain fortresses. Andorra and Albi are within reach, as is the Mediterranean coast and 15 minutes away you will find Mirepoix, one of France’s prettiest medieval market towns. Beyond Foix (45 mins) is the longest underground river in Europe where you can take a boat trip through the stalagmites and stalactites. Relax along the tranquil Canal du Midi which wends its way towards the Mediterranean, perfect for walking, cycling or hiring a boat for the day. Local wines can be tasted at most of the Domaines and especially recommended is the Blanquette de Limoux – a sparkling wine made by a process older than that of Champagne. Whether it is relaxation, activities or culture, you won't be disappointed.
