Very comfortable and great location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed one week in the condo. I liked the set up. Having a nice sized living room away from the bedroom allowed for one person to sleep while the other watched tv, like during election night. The laundry room was awesome. Parking is provided behind the house which made it safer. Also, condo C is in the rear which eliminated all street noise. The Hominey Grill, just across the street was very good and we ate there three times. Walked downtown several times, takes fifteen to twenty minutes and we are in our mid sixties. The visitors center is about a thirty minute walk. A car is necessary and convient to visit Plantations outside of town. We opted to get take out a couple of times and brought it back to the condo. Went to some Low Country ethnic restaurants and brought it back. Felt very safe walking. Most people were very friendly and don't be afraid to say hello. If you do a walking tour of Charleston, which we highly recommend, use Two Sisters, excellent, Mary Helen was awesome.

The owner will respond immediately to any problems. We needed down free cushions and he corrected the problem immediately. No five star but it's good four star.

Relaxing stay in Charleston

  • 5 of 5

We had a very relaxing stay in Charleston at the Rutledge Inn apartment C. Although we didn't cook any meals here, it would have been very easy in the well equipped kitchen. The bedroom was a bit small but the bed was very comfortable. There were several restaurants close by. We ate dinner at Five Loaves, it was very good and just a short walk around the corner. We ate breakfast one morning at Hominy Grill. It was ok, but you must go for dessert and have the chocolate pudding. Unbelievably delicious! We took long walks around Charleston, especially the Market Street area. All in all a really nice getaway.

Those extra details that make the difference

  • 5 of 5

Having never visited Charleston before, we selected Matt's apartment purely on the strength of the description in his listing. The apartment is just as described. The place is airy, spacious, and clean, but there are some additional features that we came to value even more as we got into our stay. The apartment (one of four in the building) has its own parking space - always nice. The TV cable package is extensive and includes CNN and BBC - critical during the Presidential debate season. We made good use of the washer/dryer combination and ironing equipment. The doors have a keyless entry, and you can punch in your own favorite code after the initial opening.

There are three great restaurants literally steps from your door. We tried two - Fuels and Hominy Grill. A 10 minute walk (or a free bus ride) to King St. gets you to shops, bars and restaurants. The first one you hit is "The Ordinary" (same folks who own "Fig"). It is a great seafood place in an old bank building - the kitchen is in the vault - the flounder for two is special.

Walking around Matt's neighborhood gives you a sense of Charleston both old and new. We were there just days after Hurricane Matthew and got a good sense for the amount of effort homeowners were putting into getting their structures and landscaping back into shape. Both prior to our arrival and during our stay, Matt kept us apprised of the latest weather developments, and after our departure, returned our damage deposit promptly. We enjoyed our stay immensely, and do not hesitate to recommend Matt's Rutledge apartment.

Comfortable and clean

  • 5 of 5

We were so pleased with our accommodations, after arriving tired and road-weary, that we could relax right away. Everything was provided to make our stay comfortable. Location was good, not great, sort of on the edge of some sketchy areas, but you can see that lots of renovating is going on. You have to take some kind of transportation into the actual touristy sites. Bed was comfortable, plenty of linens, kitchen completely stocked for eating and cooking.

I would not recommend the Hominy Grill, as others have, for either breakfast or dinner. My breakfast was dry pancakes, so dry they actually crumbled, and my husband had eggs with some kind of homemade sausage that tasted like ground beef with a few sad spices. My bacon was burned, and the replacement bacon was slightly less burned. Dinner was a flavorless piece of overcooked flounder with a tasteless cornmeal coating. Very disappointing.

On the other hand, Fuel was wonderful, and we loved the atmosphere. We had a great breakfast at Kitchen 208 (I think that's the name).

Loved Charleston and if we return we will hope to stay in Matt's property again.
