About Mary Kraft

Settlers Mountain was created to share the wonderful Great Smoky Mountains with friends and family. What started as a personal retreat turned into a family enterprise. Bert and Mildred Kraft loved the mountains and its local people so they settled in Bryson City and built Settlers Mountain (circa 1959). Bert, being a very industrious person with the love of architecture, built the homes on the mountain and refurbished a hand-hewn chestnut log cabin built in the 1840's, one of only five left in the area. Settlers Mountain is owned and operated by the Kraft Family and is enjoyed by five generations of Kraft’s. We welcome you to make Settlers Mountain your retreat and create a lifetime of memories.

The Kraft Family

Mary Kraft purchased this house in 1959

Couldn't ask for a better location, accomodations, and view

  • 5 of 5

Wasn't sure what to expect and once we arrived we realized it was picture perfect. The views are incredible and recharge you whether morning or evening. Loved having coffee on the deck watching the sun come up and drinks in the evening with family when the sun went down. The hiking trails are fantastic and a good bit of exercise. Staff is friendly and ready to serve. The houses are not only cute, but really affordable. Overall, you couldn't ask for a better bang for your money. Activities in Bryson City or surrounding towns give you more than enough to do the entire time. A definite revisit very soon.

My husband (papa), myself (nana), our daughter in law, 2 teenage grandchildren and two of their friends all stayed in this lovely home. Plenty of room. Upstairs has one shared bath with two bedrooms (1 King and 1 Queen). Dnstairs has one bedroom with 1 King and 1 Twin and adjoining private bath. Home had central air and each bedroom had an additional window unit. Home temp was perfect during stay. Mornings and evenings were spent on the porch with the beautiful sunrise and sunset views. Three person porch swing was used by all. Plenty of parking for the trailer we pulled. Road up to house was gravel but easily negotiated and drive was concrete. Very Private location. Kids had room to run and included water balloon fight around the grounds. Outside park like grill - would have preferred a regular gas grill. One suggestion would be a designated area with fire pit for hot dogs, smores etc. Had issue with fridge not cooling but it was due to temperature settings not being set correctly and after correction it worked perfectly. Kitchen was stocked but bring storage containers and/or ziplock bags. We brought our own clothes detergent/softener as it was not provided. Overall wonderful time and experience. Would definitely recommend!

Wonderful Views!

  • 4 of 5

Great house, great location and million-dollar views. Very convenient to destinations. With little ones, we rode the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, played at the local park, ate at great restaurants and shopped over our long weekend. The only major disappointment was the bedding-faded and worn with lower quality sheets than expected/on the web page. Other very minor things were: decor needing updated, chipped dishes, no coffee mugs, no books/puzzles/games in-cabin. A rec area down the drive may have had those items, but we did not explore. The on-site caretakers were available for any needs. The best surprise was outside- the wonderful swing and rockers on the porch and the outdoor cook area. Our family enjoyed the sunsets, hiking the jackrabbit trail and making s'mores! It is one of the best cabins we've ever stayed in. We hope to return!

Great place, another great vacation and great memories

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at View Point for two weeks this summer, our hosts Tom and Susan were very helpful and knew a lot about the area attractions and whatever issues we've had, they were quickly responding and taking care of business, the place was biiiig and accommodate us very well, the wrap around deck offered very nice views of the surrounding areas, the morning coffee or beer after dinner with the sun going down on the horizon. the close proximity to town and all the attractions, Gatlinburg an hour drive across the mountain, Nantahala river with the White water rafting, zip lining and all other nice activities, Nantahala and Fontana lakes with boat rentals, fishing or just relaxing, listening to birds chirping. One word to describe this rental: AWESOME

We would definitely go back any time.
