Ruidoso Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 9-10)

Jane and Steve built this log cabin as a family project doing almost every bit with our bare hands. We love the peace of the great outdoors and the romantic atmosphere of a real log cabin.

We bought some land in a quiet neighborhood hidden in the Lincoln National Forest in Ruidoso, NM. Our friends already had a home in this neighborhood so we knew it was a great spot.

We then traveled to Sacramento California for a Log Home Expo and studied techniques and materials of different log suppliers. After evaluating the value and engineering of many suppliers, we chose Kuhns Bros and flew to Pennsylvania with our oldest son. Here we visited the log mill where the rough materials were kiln dried. At the mill, the log cutting was performed by young Amish, skilled in the art of handcrafting logs. The rough materials were packed onto two trucks heading off to Ruidoso. It was so exciting to be a part of the whole process when the trucks left and later when they arrived at their new home.

Well, five years and who-knows how many weekend trips later, we finally finished building. All the while, our family grew older, and ok, the boys refused to leave El Paso (and their friends) on the weekends anymore. Steve's parents helped with construction and gardening during their annual vacations West.

We are happy to share this experience with other families and hope you will all have a chance to enjoy this peaceful environment.

About Steve Thomson

Steve is an automotive engineer and Jane is a dental hygienist. Together we ran a Boy Scout troop and got to love the outdoors while our 2 sons made Eagle Scout.

Steve Thomson purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Steve Thomson chose New Mexico

We loved visiting Ruidoso for the peaceful environment, great restaurants and fresh mountain air. We decided to build our own place because it was hard for us to find a real log cabin that we could afford to rent for a weekend AND that was not in a congested area of other cabins.

What makes this cabin unique

This location is so quiet, less than a dozen cars go by in a single day. And still, it is only a 3-mile drive to all the shopping and restaurants that make Ruidoso great!

Nice property and enjoyed overall stay

Nice property and stay. The only complaint is that property was not clean on arrival. We called owner and cleaning crew arrived in 2 hours.

Nice cabin, comfortable overall, nice porch to sit and enjoy, inside and kitchen good

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the cabin. The location was great. The overall stay was really good and all of use (4 adults) found the place comfortable and pleasing. It was cozy and the kitchen and appliances were good. We spent much time on the deck and found it comfortable and relaxing. Overall we were very happy with the cabin, the value we got for what we paid and would recommend it to others. The cabin was out far enough so there was little traffic but there still was some road noise on the deck when a vehicle passed by. We had an issue finding the fan control the first day and found it the second day on a picture frame on the wall and so the first night was a little warm in the loft. The loft window did not have a screen so we could not open the window in the loft at night. The second night was comfortable as the fans did a good job cooling the cabin. The owner was very responsive to emails and responded very timely to respond up to time we arrived. The rule of no shoes seemed confining at first but we had no problem going with no shoes inside. My brother brought some paper slippers for all of us and it was not that bad. We did not have Wi-Fi so we texted and used phones for internet while at the cabin. The cabin did not have Wi-Fi but our other part of the party had a cabin that did so those that needed it had a way to do what they needed. As of this writing I have not confirmed any other fees and we left the cabin cleaner than when we arrived less bedding/bathroom laundry. Again, I think this is a nice place to stay and recommend it to others if you do not require Wi-Fi.

Amazing time in Ruidoso

  • 5 of 5

My family had a great time in this beautiful cabin. The internal space and distribution is perfect to get nice gatherings. My kids really enjoyed the deers around the cabin even staying close to them. It is close to the town and everything you need to get a great time. Steve nicely provided us good recommendations about the local attractions. We would love to be back soon.

Cozy Log Cabin

  • 4 of 5

Our family of 4 and another family of 4 recently stayed here over Spring Break. The cabin is conveniently situated near the town and the slopes, with trees all around and daily visits by deer. There is no internet, but some of us had cell phone coverage although it was slow. The kids had fun sleeping in the loft, but it was a bit nosy in the morning since the loft is over the adult bedrooms. The kitchen was well stocked, so we were able to have many meals in the cabin. Overall we had a great time!

Amazing Cabin

  • 5 of 5

We rented this cabin for a winter break getaway with our friends. We had 4 adults and 4 kids ages 6-10. The house is situated just out side of town and was easy to get to. If you are travelling in a 2 wd vehicle you may need chains to access the house if there is ice on the road. We were there during the major snow storm that shut down a large portion of roads in NM, so I am sure the roads were worse than normal. We did not leave the cabin for 3 days and had a wonderful time. The kids played in the snow, we brought sleds and they sled down the nearby street after it was plowed. The loft area was perfect for the kids to hang out in and even had a small tv. Firewood was provided, data signal on AT&T was pretty good, the kitchen was well stocked and we were able to easily cook our meals. There is a washer and dryer. Make sure to bring coffee supplies if you are an avid coffee drinker. This cabin was the perfect getway at a great price. The neighbor feeds the deer and birds and we saw quite a bit of wildlife up close! The owner was very responsive to all of my questions. It was a great place to make some great memories.
