We recently relocated to this beautiful community from the Big Island of Hawaii. We lived on the island for 35 years where we raised a family and fully enjoyed the island style of living. When we retired, though, we knew it was time for a change.
Back in California after all those years in Puna, Volcano, and Kona, we now enjoy the proximity of children, grandchildren and extended family.
Tim and Kathy Gaughen purchased this house in 2011
Like Kona, Fort Bragg is a spectacular Pacific Coast community. This property offers space, beauty, redwoods, wildlife, and comfort.
We stayed through Thanksgiving weekend with my husband, 3 teenage kids and my parents. The house had room for everyone and fit our needs nicely. Good location-not far from Fort Bragg and close to 10-mile beach.
The House: It truly is a home away from home! We arrived for our stay to easy access instructions, a super clean house and fantastic green scenery - including a huge succulent garden near the carport. The kitchen was larger than expected and had so many useful items like coffee filters, cooking oil and a plethora of spices/herbs. The bathrooms were sparkling and provided many items like a hotel would - hand soap and body wash! The hot tub is literally surrounded by a cluster of redwoods, the pictures do not do it justice! Completely magical. The TV offers cable, all the movie channels and a bunch of recordings to fit any person's preference. I highly recommend this place to any travelers - couples, friends and families!
Activities: You must check out Glass Beach - even though most of the glass has been picked through it still is beautiful. Definitely hit up Mackerricher State Park, literally down the street from the house. It has a great beach and tide pools! Point Cabrillo Lighthouse is awesome as well. The Botanical Gardens are fantastic. We enjoyed shopping at Tangents for eccentric items. Check out the Glass Beach Musuem too!
Food: Piaci Pizza - delicious!, Silver's on the Wharf - salmon yum!, Point Noyo - hello oysters!, Patterson's Pub - okay this one is a bit of a trek to Mendocino but well worth it! Super small place, you will wait for a table but amazing mussel/clam steamers, cocktails, oysters also and tasty fried food.
I not only highly recommend staying at Chateau Cleone but visiting Fort Bragg as well. It is a charming beach town with the best of both worlds, ocean on one side, forest on the other.
It was just what my family needed. Quiet, clean, accommodations for all ages and conviently located. Games and books galore, state park close by that had so much to see and hike thru. My only regret , we should have stayed longer!!
Our stay and Chateau Cleone was perfect. We really enjoyed the place and the easy access to the ocean or to Ft. Bragg. Everything we needed was at the place. Thank you very much.
Each year we rent a house for a week in the Fort Bragg area along with a small group of longtime friends we don’t get to see often. The house we normally rent had been put up for sale so we took a chance on renting Chateau Cleone and were very pleasantly surprised. The house is set in a beautiful greenscape with lots of succulents and bushes framing it and is backed up to very tall beautiful redwoods that actually encircle the hot tub. The house itself looks like a vacation home you might find at Lake Tahoe with the dark wood siding, a large wonderful deck and bonus wood-stove inside with firewood included. We were happy to find the house well maintained and clean with 3 good sized bedrooms complete with down comforters and fresh linens. There is room in one bedroom downstairs for a cot or futon mattress in the laundry area complete with a door that worked great for our teenage niece. There is also room in the upstairs bedroom for a roll-away bed or cot that is located in the closet. If need be additional cots/sleeping bags could be set up in the area by the wood-stove and the living room. The kitchen is bigger then the galley kitchen in the house we usually rent, so we were very happy about that but still very cozy maybe enough for 2 people to get around in. When more room was needed we used the tables for more counter space to prepare food. If your going to be cooking meals you may need to bring some Tupperware type containers, foil & Ziploc bags. For entertainment we barbecued and lounged on the deck and used the satellite TV music stations. There is also a portable CD player in the storage closet upstairs along with lots of games & tons of books in the living room. Our friends with Verizon had cell phone service, but those of us with AT&T service and had no service unless we walked or drove down to the little Cleone grocery store. Speaking of the store it was well stocked and great for last minute items but a little pricey for a lot of groceries. We really were happy with our stay at Chateau Cleone and plan on renting it again for our future Fort Bragg trips. We would definitely recommend it for anyone looking to get away but still have all the comforts of home. Thank you Tim and Kathy for having it available for our enjoyment!!
This is our second stay at Chateau Cleone and we love this space. The deck is delightful as is the sun room and we love having the kitchen. The entire space is very clean and neat and all of the bedrooms are a good size. One of our favorite parts is the hot tub, it's like being in a redwood cathedral.
The only down side was the bed in the upstairs bedroom was VERY squeaky, but they promised to have that fixed as it the damage done when the new carpet was installed and we would like additional comfortable-type seating in the sun or living areas as they both only accommodate 2 or 3 people comfortable seating and there are always at least 4 of us who would like to sit together.
