An island with many attractive assets: Ré is largely praised as a charming resort, which has succeeded in combining its image of trendy chic island with its natural and historic assets, as well as with some traditional activities which go back to ancient times (up to Antiquity) and steadily continue nowadays, like fishing, oyster farming, salt-marshes, vineyards or market gardening. Rather small in size (about 30km long and 5km wide, with a narrow isthmus of hardly 100m), it offers an outstanding variety of things to see and to do throughout the whole year, on land or sea.
The 85km² of the island, hardly rising a few meters above sea level, are criss-crossed by a well developed network of more than 100km of bicycle tracks, some of them stretching along the coast, or crossing picturesque harbours, woods, marshes with a bird sanctuary. Bike riding is therefore both the most popular transportation means for islanders and tourists, and one of the nicest activities to discover and enjoy the island.
3 Talassotherapy centers on the island.
An appealing resort all year through: With a mild climate all year through due to the ocean proximity, a nice breeze usually blowing during the hottest days, Ré stands as one of the preferred tourist destinations on the French West coast.
Summer is of course the most popular season, to enjoy the sun and bathe in the ocean. However Spring and Fall also offer pleasant and sunny conditions, with much fewer tourists on the seaside (about 100km of shore, mainly beaches) and in the inland villages (10 villages on the island, 16400 permanent islanders in 2009).
Winter provides keen sailors, fishermen, walkers, cyclists and horse riders with unique opportunities to freely enjoy the windy and invigorating fresh air from the ocean, the deserted beaches and inland trails, ... before savouring delicious fish & sea food! :-)
Even the Winter storms offer an impressive and unforgetable show, with this peculiar mix of striking colour contrasts, weird light, strong winds and the wild power of ocean high surf crashing against the shore.
What to do during your stay: All year long, many bird species can be observed on the island (wildlife reserve), and scenic sunsets over the ocean can be admired from the South shore (the beach just 200m away from the villa is a great spot to enjoy gorgeous sunsets!)
In addition to all the activities already mentioned, the island also offers many sightseeing possibilities : several museums (at least 5 in various places), the famous fortifications designed by Vauban, a military architect of king Louis XIV (see especially Saint-Martin citadel, registered as part of UNESCO World Heritage), the abbey 'des Châteliers', the wine growers cooperative (making and selling the famous aperitif 'Pineau des Charentes'), many small art galleries and craft shops, ...
Note that bikes can be rented from all villages, and it is highly recommended to do so, especially during high season, when the extensive use of a car is inadvisable anyway, due to heavy traffic on the roads causing some real congestions at some times & places.

Gem on the beautiful island of Ile de Ré
Our family with two teenagers had a fabulous time in this exquisite, spacious and well-furnished villa located in a quiet residential area close to the beach, forest and facilities of La Noue.
We spent our time exploring the lovely island with its picturesque small villages and the beautiful coast, doing bike tours on bicycle paths (a very safe way to travel through the countryside and along the coastline with its stunning views), walking through fantastic scenery and on long beaches during low tide (the villa is situated directly behind the dunes so that you have a short way to the beach), strolling on typical French markets, buying seasonal food and later cooking in the spacious kitchen. We loved to visit La Rochelle with its shopping malls, only half an hour away by car on the continent.
You do not have to be active the whole time because there are many possibilities to simply relax on different terraces or in the well-tended garden where you can enjoy reading a book.
There is good Wi-Fi, which is accessible in the house.
From the initial contact when I inquired about renting the property to the actual booking, the owners were helpful, always prompt with answering any questions. The villa is accurately portrayed and matched the online description. Our first impression of the villa was very good: the house was clean, well-maintained and functional, equipped with a dishwasher and washing machines.
There is a towel and bed linen service available if you arrive by plane. That was quite helpful for us.
All in all, we can highly recommend this property. It is certainly ideal for one family wanting comfort and space or for a larger family wanting to be close but not too close. A perfect gem!
A great property on a wonderful island
We were very impressed with this property. We were three families (5 young children in total) holidaying together for the UK May half-term holidays, and this suited us perfectly. The houses and pool were very clean, and a minor repair required for the bathroom was addressed on the same day with a quick e-mail to the owner's agent on the island. The owner and his agent were both extremely easy to deal with (both speak English), and our security deposit was returned without any quibbles very promptly at the end of our stay. Linen and towels are not included, although they can be rented from the owner's agent.
The pool does have a secure and very ingenious fence around it (not shown in the photos on the website!). Some of us sampled the water, although it was still a bit too cool in late May for regular pool use. There is good Wi-Fi, which is accessible in the lounge rooms of both houses, although not elsewhere (stand near the fence to get a signal initially!).
Dishwasher and washing machines made a stay with children that much easier. The houses had a good range of crockery and cutlery and self-catering was easy, with markets in La Noue and La Couarde and a good supermarket in La Couarde.
Ile de Re is a terrific destination. We hired bikes and cycled all over, using the extensive network of dedicated bike paths to visit Loix, St Martin and La Flotte, amongst others. The house is in a nice, quiet location - 5 minute stroll to a sandy beach, and about 10 minute bike ride from La Noue (two bakeries open for croissants and bread in the morning) and 5 minute drive to La Couarde. St Martin and La Flotte are also only about 10-15 minutes drive away.
All in all - a wonderful place, which we would recommend highly.
A perfect vacation home in a perfect place
We loved this house and hope to stay again. Our first impression was good; the house was clean, well-maintained, functional and matched the online description. There was nothing dramatic about it, but over time we came to appreciate just how perfect this house and its guest house are for a family vacation. First there's the size; it's small enough to be comfortable but large enough for everyone to have enough room. We found it mysteriously easy to keep clean and wish our own house were the same.
The guest house provides a great way for family to be close but not too close. It suited all of us from our 2-year old up to his grandmother. The garden and walls give a great sense of space and privacy. Sitting out back was perfectly relaxing.
The location is fantastic. It's a relatively quiet part of the island but an easy bike ride to three good town including our favorites, La Flotte and St. Martin. A decent beach was a short walk away and a slightly longer walk led to a world-class beach.
One note: the pool is safer for children than it may appear in the photos; it has a removable safety fence.
Relax and enjoy
We spent a delightful week relaxing on Ile de Re in this lovely holiday home.
As two families we enjoyed the extra space that the main house and the additional building gave us - and particularly the mezzanine bedroom for our teenager!
The properties were light and airy, and benefited from a choice of great beaches and a peaceful residential neighbourhood but only a short cycle ride from everything else we needed.
Definitely book the bikes, it made our holiday so much more fun, and the safe cycle lanes meant our extended family group could make the adventure together.
We plan to return to the island and the property!
Confirming all the other points for 2011
We would echo all the plus points people have already made, including the point that he photos don't do it full justice. Spotlessly clean, perfectly equipped, warm welcome. Ile de Re is wonderful and the property is so close to a surf beach and the facilities of La Noue. A good place to get on a bike. The property is very secure with the gates and pool fence perfect for our crawling and toddling grandchildren.
2 Families with 5 children (total)
We were absolutely delighted with this villa. The set up worked really well for us, one family in each section who could come together or spend time apart as needed. It is extremely well appointed, having absolutely everything you could need including wet suits and body boards for the kids. I can't recommend it highly enough!
The Ile de Ré is one of the jewels of the Atlantic coast. Sightseeing sites and sport activities for everyone, or just quiet places to rest and relax, depending on what you are looking for. Historic landmarks: Saint Martin de Ré with its Citadel (Vauban fortification, now registered as part of UNESCO World Heritage), Gothic bell tower of Sainte Marie or Ars, lighthouse of the 'Baleines' (whales in French), salterns... Sport activities: cycling, horse riding, roller blading, tennis, walking, and all kinds of water sports: sailing, kite surfing, wakeboard, jet ski (water scooter), motor boat... Even young children can practice sailing and windsurfing in safe conditions on a little lake separated from the sea. Nature activities : shrimping, bird watching (the Island is a bird sanctuary situated on a migration route), thalassotherapy / spa (nearest in Sainte-Marie, 5km). Cinema (nearest in La Couarde, 8km). The island is also linked to the busy port of La Rochelle by a 3.5km bridge. You can therefore enjoy this beautiful city with the largest pleasure harbour of the Atlantic, a famous aquarium... The Ile de Re is a glorious island of nature, culture and beautiful beaches just off the Charente-Maritime coast in western France. The population increases hugely during the summer months as families flock to the island for the magnificent climate and safe beaches and calming ambiance. Just 30km across, any Ile de Re property is a perfect base from which to investigate the sandy beaches, salt marshes and vineyards which have made the island famous as a holiday retreat in the sun. The natural beauty of the Ile de Re has been protected by strict planning controls keeping all Ile de Re properties and buildings under two stories high. Holiday properties in the Ile de Re tend to be low lying whitewashed apartments with coloured shutters and terracotta roofs. The beach is never far from a self catering Ile de Re holiday property or apartment, and the finest on the island are found to the south of the island, where the sand is soft, and there are plenty of idyllic spots to set your towel. The northern beaches are rocky and flat, with very shallow waters perfect for oyster and mussel cultivation. Ile de Re surfing holidays are great fun. The shallow beaches of Le Bois Plage and La Couarde are battered by huge Atlantic breakers, perfect for surfing. Ile de Re is home to a number of surf schools providing lessons for children who have never tried the sport before to refresher courses for those with a few waves under their belt. Waterskiing, wake boarding and kite surfing in the Ile de Re also thrive, and there are some exceptional places to go sailing, take a lesson or hire a yacht and discover your own spot of paradise on the Ile de Re. There has always been a strong connection between the Ile de Re and horses, and that continues to this day. There are a range of excellent stables on the island, as well as a maze of magnificent bridle paths taking riders to some of the most spectacular viewpoints on the island. Walking holidays from Ile de Re holiday properties are also very enjoyable. After a long day on the beaches or in the hills, there are three spa centres in which to get pampered. Regardless of the location of your Ile de Re apartment, a spa centre will not be far away, specialising in thalassotherapy, the use of the maritime environment for the benefits of your health. Whether you are feeling under the weather or not, an afternoon in a thalassotherapy centre from your Ile de Re villa couldn’t be more relaxing! The islands capital, St-Martin de Re is a stunning fishing port in the north of the island. Surrounded by 17th century fortifications, St Martin de Re has a glorious atmosphere, maintained by the street café culture and seaside location. During the long summer months, temperatures in the Ile de Re average over 25˚C (July and August), bringing swarms of tourists to self catering Ile de Re properties. For the rest of the year, there is a mystical feel to the Ile de Re, as the crowds disappear, despite average temperatures remaining above 10˚C throughout the year. The Airport La Rochelle – Ile de Re (LRH), lies just outside La Rochelle on the French mainland, and is connected to the Ile de Re by a 3km toll bridge.
