I would like to introduce us. My name is Celia, my husband is Enzo (short for Vincenzo), and our daughter is called Isabella. We are an Anglo Italian family and Le Mura is our country home. We split our time between Lucca and Benabbio. We have lived and worked in the area for many years having met and married in London. I have been very lucky to have a unique experience, as I have always been treated as a local by the village and in our Piazza in Lucca. We are very happy to help our guests in any way to make their holiday as perfect as possible.
Celia & Enzo Cammarota purchased this villa in 2000
We chose Le Mura for many reasons, first and foremost for the beauty of the house and its magical position. We bought the house as a family home not an investment therefore the good road up to the property was a big plus especially in winter. The fact that the house is a few minutes walk from a village that has a very active community was important for us because we didn’t want a village without a stable population. Benabbio is one of the few villages of its size to have bars and restaurants and a wonderful food shop as well as newsagent not to mention the ruins of a castle. The house itself has lots of space and large rooms and the farmhouse kitchen complete with fireplace and stone font that I always dreamed of. The views from every room and the fact that the house had been conserved rather than done up meant that all the character was still there and the rooms are large giving lots of individual space when friends visit. Le Mura’s position near Lucca, Florence and Pisa was also very important as we could enjoy the beauty of the countryside with easy access to important centres. This area has so much beauty that I will never run out of places to discover. My husband wanted our daughter to speak a pure Italian and this part of Tuscany is still unspoilt but not remote. Enzo being the Italian chose the area and balanced rural living with access to cities to airports. Lucca our local city is a delight.
Le Mura Villa is your quintessential stone Tuscan Farmhouse with terracotta floors and chestnut beams. The farmhouse kitchen for me is the hub of the house. It was love at first sight. The rooms are large and all share the most amazing view of the Garfagnana national park and Carrara Mountains. The position near Florence, Pisa and Lucca and therefore hubs of transport and city life. Secluded without being remote, near a village which is full of year round residents with lots of families with small children. The joy of being able to walk to the village for shopping and restaurants but be far enough out to have privacy. The perfect position for the pool, shade as well as sun in the grounds and of course our very own olive grove and vines. I love to sit by the pool and watch the sunset over the mountains and dine with the fireflies dancing around while on a summer evening. I also love to curl up by the wood-burning stove in winter with a book and lock the world out.
I actually do not know where to start – but like you (maybe) we looked at the pictures of Le Mura and thought wow! But honestly when you arrive it was much more than wow, I was emotional with the beauty of it all! The views are incredible and after the drive up the mountain with a number of tight corners in a brand new hire car, Le Mura was more than welcoming! The roads are fine and you do get use to them, but I would be careful in a large or prestige car!
The welcome by Celia, Enzo and Isabella was so touching, there warmth, knowledge, kindness made us feel at home immediately in their home. We had a take away dinner pre-ordered from the local restaurant which was delicious and very reasonable, Celia kindly picked this up for us so all we had to do was cook!
We had a mixture of ages in our party, the youngest 9 our eldest bought her boyfriend, there was plenty of space for us all. The bedrooms were all gorgeous and traditional with sumptuous Italian bed linin that I wanted to take home with us! The kitchen is the best equipped kitchen I have seen. We all love food and I am a keen cook, so loved using the big saucepans, marble tops to make kneading bread that bit easier!
We spent a lot of hours by the pool again with the most amazing views! Celia and Enzo have placed an amazing dinner table which at lunch is in the shade so was perfect for our lunches!
The grounds were amazing and we loved picking fresh figs, pear’s, peaches!
We walked the shepherds path twice to the local restaurant and dancing underneath the stars which so lovely!
One of the highlights for us all was the afternoon in which Enzo taught us how to make fresh pasta with 2 beautiful sauces, his knowledge, passion and enthusiasm for authentic Italian food was inspiring. Celia made the most amazing chestnut cake for dessert where the flour has to be pre ordered and is still hand ground by stone by a villager of 92! We all ate together and shared stories under the stars of Le Mura. We had the most amazing holiday, so lucky to have met Celia, Enzo and Isabella and really hope one day we can visit the very special Le Mura again.
If you are looking for a wonderful, magical experience read on. I loved the movie Under the Tuscan Sun, and I wanted that experience. When my husband said he wanted to go to Italy for the month of June I began to look into Tuscan villas and I found a gem, Le Mura!
We spent a month at this 1600 year old farm house. The house is spacious and welcoming and the grounds are beautiful. We gathered at the large farmhouse table in the kitchen for food and conversation, sat in the living room discussing our day, and retired to the comfortable bedrooms with the cool mountain air blowing through the windows.
Le Mura is close to a mountain village called Bennabio, just a short walk on the path behind the house. There are two great restaurants there and a market. We walked there for dinner many times and hiked to the twelfth century church up above the village. Bagni di Lucca is right down the hill and Lucca is a short drive away. We also drove to Chinque Terra and the beach in Viareggio. Train travel from Lucca to Florence, Rome and Venice is very easy! Many days we just stayed and relaxed at the Villa.
The views are breathtaking from all the windows throughout the house, majestic vistas to gaze at. I loved cooking in the kitchen looking out at the hilltop villages.
The gardens at Le Mura are charming, fresh herbs, roses, hydrangeas, lavender, olive groves, fig and cherry trees. The cherries were wonderful! The pool area is a lovely setting looking over the mountain ranges. My husband and I spent many mornings out there with our coffee. We all enjoyed swimming or sun bathing and it was a great spot to gather and relax.
We had family and friends join us each week we were there. Everyone loved the views, pool and spacious rooms. Our grandchildren found books and games to play with too.
Do have Enzo prepare a meal for you. We had wonderful, Tuscan dinners at the large farmhouse table on the lawn overlooking the mountains watching the sunset.
Enzo and Celia are a beautiful couple. They welcome you and make you feel right at home. They answered all our questions from where to eat, how to get to the train stations, directions for our excursions and where to buy groceries. They were always available if we needed them.
Le Mura was a home away from home for us, our expectations were more than met. Thank you Enzo and Celia, you have become great friends. We loved Le Mura and we will be back.
Le Mura was exactly what we were looking for when we began planning our first Tuscan vacation.
This 15th century farmhouse villa has been carefully maintained to preserve its original character and charm with just the right modern additions.
The first time we drove up the approach hill through many hairpin turns,we wondered where we were going, but on arrival at the villa, there was no question that the privacy and views were perfect. Dreamlike!
The nearby towns, Bennabio and Bagni di Lucca are charming and unspoiled, with other day trips, including the beautiful city of Lucca, which has all that you need within its walls, only about an hour away.
An additional treat was meeting our wonderful and helpful host family.
Le Mura is a beautiful and unspoiled home that compliments this beautiful and still unspoiled part of Italy.
Le Mura was exactly what we were looking for when we began planning our first trip to Tusacany. This 15th century farmhouse villa has been carefully maintained to preserve its original charm with just the right modern additions.
The first time we drove up the hill through many little hairpin turns we wondered where we were going, but on arrival there was no question that the privacy and views were perfect! Dreamlike.
Both the nearby towns of Benabbio and Bagni di Lucca are charming and unspoiled, with other day trips including the beautiful city of Lucca only about an hour a way.
An additional treat was meeting our wonderful and helpful hosts!
It is a beautiful, authentic and unspoiled part of Italy which is perfectly complimented by staying at Le Mura.
Six couples got together at La Mura to celebrate a milestone birthday and we couldn't have chosen a better place. La Mura was spacious enough to give everyone their own space and when we wanted to get together the huge kitchen with the oversized table was the perfect spot. It was a little cool one night so we started a fire in the kitchen fireplace and it was magical. The beautiful pool was our other go-to spot and we spent many hours there procrastinating day trips because--why would we want to leave? The little village of Benabbio was a ten minute walk away along a scenic path, the perfect place for a morning cappuccino or as it turns out, a memorable dinner. We celebrated the birthday at a wonderful restaurant in the village and the food couldn't have been better or the people more welcoming. The villa was steeped in history and the views were even better than advertised. And then there was Enzo and Celia, our hosts. They went over and above the call of duty to answer our questions and make our stay as seamless as possible. When we thought we had left a cellphone at a restaurant in Lucca, Celia turned the city upside down to try and find it. So not only did we come away with memories of an idyllic vacation , we made two great friends as well.
Villa Le Mura is a really beautiful house in a stunning setting with fantastic views. It is wonderfully spacious - huge kitchen with lovely long table - with a magnificent long rustic table outside from which the glorious views and sunsets can be enjoyed. Inside the house is very relaxed, very comfortable. The short walk to the historic village of Bennabio is very enjoyable, through the olive groves with more lovely views. In the village you have an excellent restaurant where we ate twice - great food and very good value. The village shop is also well stocked, excellent salami and cheese as well as fruit and veg, and all the basics. There are lovely circular walks from the house. Getting to Bagni di Lucca is easy and from there you can reach Lucca, Florence and Pisa easily by train. The three students in our party had a great day trip to Florence. At Bagni you can have a steam bath in cave with a natural hot spring used by the Romans. The gardens at Le Mura are a delight, and the generous decking and patio by the lovely pool have room for multiple sun loungers. If you like old stone walls, herbs in the garden, roses and jasmine, sunsets, views and access to lovely Italian villages and towns, don't hesitate! Celia and Enzo were also very kind and helpful on arrival, giving us lots of suggestions for things to do, and local history.
