The McKinley Retreat offers unique eco-friendly Adirondack vacation rentals nestled directly into the Adirondack forest approximately 30 minutes from the village of Lake Placid. Our rentals are designed to provide the privacy and tranquility you seek in one-of-a-kind 'camping-alternative' experience. You can also choose from several available backcountry ‘luxury’ options to temporarily transform a piece of our forest into your personal back-to-nature hideaway - only without many of the normal hassles associated with getting back-to-nature!
You have three rental options to choose from: 1) The rustic Hilltop Log Cabin site with a beautiful mountain view, has electricity and some appliances. Also, outdoor fireplace, hot outdoor shower and portable toilet 2) the Forest Cabin site snuggled under the tall pines has a covered outdoor kitchen area, screened-in seating area, and fire place. No electricity but drinking and wash water are provided. Has nearby portable toilet 3) the back-to-nature forest sites where you bring your own sleeping accommodations or we can set up a traditional ‘tent’ for you to experience.
We have recently added an office building located at the base of the mountain, near the parking area, with modern showers and flush toilets available for your use 24/7. The office part of the building is open daily for coffee, information, and a charging station for your electronics.
We welcome last minute availability inquiries – although the options will be limited. We also love pets at the McKinley Retreat so be sure to ask about the options to bring your pet. We do require a small refundable pet fee.
Please note this is a 'rustic' back-to-nature adventure and is only ideal if you are truly searching for a unique Adirondack vacation in the heart of the woods.
The Hilltop Log Cabin is an excellent choice for larger groups who share the same back-to-nature vision. The cabin itself can sleep at least 8 (more if you are really good friends!). And there is room to place a few small tents nearby on the Hilltop site for those in your group who prefer a little more privacy.
The McKinley Retreat is not for everyone and therein is part of the secret to its beauty. Visit our website for details or contact us and we will let you know exactly what to expect.

The property is beautiful! We stayed in the hilltop cabin, and the view from up there is gorgeous! The picture does not show it, but the back side of the cabin that faces the mountains/valley has several very large windows. The inside of the cabin was very clean and cozy, and much attention has been given to details. There is a fridge, stove, coffee pot, toaster oven, microwave and sink. The fire-pit outside the cabin was perfect! They had boxes of newspaper and kindling, and a large supply of logs. We roasted marshmellows while enjoying the stars and the view! The toilet and shower are attached to the cabin, and you walk outside the length of the cabin to get to them. This could be inconvenient if it was very cold or rainy, but I actually enjoyed the outdoor shower a lot! The owners are very friendly. The land has been in the family for decades, and there are two cabins and several campsites they make available for guests. I got the sense that they cared more about us enjoying the property than about making money. It was the prefect place to recover from a week of backpacking in the Adirondacks. I highly recommend it!
My husband and I along with our two dogs wanted to get away and go camping for a few days. We had an amazing time here! Everything was really well thought out, even more than we could imagine! The outdoor kitchen was perfect and had everything we needed. The hiking trails were perfect for our dogs. We checked out the bigger cabin on our hike and plan on going up again with our friends! I would highly recommend the McKinley retreat!
My girlfriend and I stayed for a long weekend in the Hill Top Cabin and it was simply wonderful. You're given all the privacy in the world and the view is just spectacular. Clear days and starry nights are just stunning. The cabin was rustic, clean, and has electricity. The outhouse and outdoor shower were also very clean and I never thought showering outdoors would ever be that stellar but it was sublime. The walk to the cabin was not difficult but it is, almost obviously, uphill. However, if you are unable to do so, the people there are very helpful and are happy to accommodate. There are plenty of trails onsite if you are looking to get some exercise as well! If you are looking for something off the beaten trail, the serenity of seclusion and the great outdoors in it's purest form, this place is for you.
We booked the forest cabin for a one night weekend getaway. It was just two of us and being from Manhattan, we didn't know what to expect and weren't too prepared for camping, but we had amazing stay as the Forest Cabin had everything we could possibly need. Despite no electricity or running water at the cabin, the main house is a short walk away where you could use a flushable toilet and shower. Everything was very clean and extremely organized, and the "kitchen" was well-equipped with a grill, sink, pots & pans, flatware, paper plates, etc. We had a cozy stay and awoke to only the sound of birds chirping. Karen was a great host - so sweet and accommodating. We plan on returning soon.
We stayed in the forest cabin. It was a quiet get-away for just the two of us. The accommodations were well thought out. Everything we could possibly need was provided. The cabin was clean and cozy. The cabin is nestled amongst tall pine trees and was quite serene. We also enjoyed near-by Lake Placid and the top-notch restaurants close-by. We are planning to return again soon.
Our get away from the hustle and bustle of the city could not have been any better! Karen is sweet, nice, and exteremly caring. She was always there when arranged and catered to any of our needs. The cabin was beautiful, clean and very functional, cozy and every little detail thought out. There is no electricity and frankly you don't need it as you are provided with multiple lights, flash lights, and candles. You can also take a hot shower at the office! As for the "ladies room" wow! I haven't seen anything so clean ... ever! The location is also perfect as it is easy to get to and you the grounds are so large, it is just you and nature. We could not have had a better stay :)
Thanks for everything Karen! We just loved your place so much, we did not want to leave!
