This charming cabin, 'Deer Run,' is situated on a beautiful, private setting, surrounded by Hemlocks, Mountain Laurel, Rhododendron, and Holly Trees at 3,000 feet on the top of Black Knob Mountain. Located in Pisgah Forest Estates, the cabin is in a private neighborhood, secluded from the main house where the owners live.

About Sandra Whitaker

Thirteen years ago we bought 13 acres of land to build a cabin to vacation in with plans to later build a small retirement home and use the cabin as quest quarters. When we ended up building a larger house than planned, we decided to rent out the cabin.

Don is a retired Cardiologist, and Sandra is a retired teacher. We have hiked this area for over 30 years and knew that we would want to spend the rest of our lives here.

While we genuinely love hiking, Don is passionate about taking pictures of wild flower and nature, and Sandra is very active at Brevard Health & Racquet Club.

It’s great being able to walk out our door with our dogs to so many beautiful trails. There is so much wild life to discover.

Sandra Whitaker purchased this cabin in 2000

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful cabin with us. We appreciate how all the rooms are immaculate and beautifully appointed. I love the super soft blankets on the beds! We enjoyed the scenery, the musical DVDs, and the kitchen stocked with everything we needed for all our meals. It's hard to leave such a wonderful place.

Perfect little cabin!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in this cabin for a few days while vacationing in Brevard. The cabin was less than a 10 minute drive from some of the most beautiful waterfalls we had ever seen. It's super secluded! One night it rained for a bit, and the sound it made on the tin roof was like a symphony. The cabin was very clean and comfortable, and the owners of the cabin were very hospitable. We felt right at home.

Even though we're nature freaks and spent most of our time hiking, it was nice to have the town of Brevard within a short driving distance from the cabin. We went out one night for dinner, and the town itself was very charming, with a nice selection of locally owned restaurants. We even saw a white squirrel!

We will absolutely stay at this cabin again the next time we plan a hiking trip!

Thank you so much!

Awesome Cabin

  • 5 of 5

I stayed with my two teenage daughters for spring break and had a blast! The cabin is perfect - Cozy, Quiet, Peaceful, Beautiful. We were greeted the first day by one of the white squirrels the area is famous for. We used the cabin for a "base" to go hiking, tour the Biltmore, and snow skiing. My girls and I came from Texas and they wanted to play in the snow. It snowed and looked exactly like the pictures! Sandra offered a sled and the girls went sledding. So much fun!! The fireplace is an awesome way to end the day!

Quiet Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently spent three nights. The cabin was perfect for us and close to the trails we came to hike. The owner provided all of the basic necessities and then some which made our stay more enjoyable since we didn't need to leave the cabin for multiple grocery runs. Additionally, the owner was available for questions and recommendations but was never overbearing. It was colder than we expected while we were there but the cabin is insulated very well and we never got cold. We visited both Brevard and Hendersonville while in the area. Hope to rent this cabin again before the year is over.

Super laid back quiet retreat

  • 5 of 5

I find a place like this every year for my wife. She is a painter and she does her art all weekend while I cook and keep the dog out of her hair. Pisgah and Dupont Forests are nearby so Gus (our dog) and I had plenty of places to hike. The cabin has wonderful light for painting and is well furnished. Perfect size, with an upstairs loft for a couple more friends if needed. Sandra is great!

Cozy, quiet, and comfortable- a great little "home base" to come back to while exploring the area!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I absolutely loved our stay. The owner has it very nicely furnished right down to the kitchen.... one trip to the grocery store (15 minutes or so away) and we had everything we needed for our weekend meals. Lots of places in Brevard to eat out if you want to, we just prefer to "eat in". The owner lives nearby and met us when we arrived for a short welcome tour of the place... very nice people! Great area for hiking, biking, or just auto touring. We visited DuPont State Forest.... highly recommend that for a day hike. Four beautiful waterfalls in a 7 mile or so hike. If you're not up for that much walking, Hooker Falls is just a short walk from the parking area and is definitely worth seeing.

This property is not at all what comes to mind when you hear the word "cabin".... creaky floors, drafty, etc. This a very well built and well maintained cozy little mountain top cottage that is well worth the money!
