About Alexander Barnett
I built this house with my parents in 1994. We moved to Mal Pais from California and never looked back. I married a local girl and now have a daughter of my own. My wife and I own and operate Marys Restaurant / Organic Farm just 50mts down the road.
Alexander Barnett purchased this House in 1998
Why Alexander Barnett chose Malpais
I fell in love with Mal Pais and the people, the simple way of life and its breath taking beauty. https://youtu.be/jElt7nsrMhM
What makes this House unique
We are in a quiet, intimate, private cove in old town Mal Pais. Steps from the beach with wifi and all the amenities, yet away from the tourist noise. A 5-minute drive to Playa Carmen- Bank, Farmacy, etc.. A 2-minute walk to Marys Restaurant/Organic Farm and old town Mal Pais- the school, church, soccerfield, fisherman's beach... Surfing and swimming, fishing and tide pools, the ocean is an integral part of daily life. The house is also bordered by a stream- wildlife is everywhere, monkeys, birds, parrots, iguanas, etc.. Across the street is Marys Organic Farm!

We had the best time with our two girls ages 11 and 7. Such a perfect spot for a family vacation! Alex was great to work with and Mal Pais is a special place!
Peaceful and private!
A little piece of heaven. The view and beach are simply raw beauty. Comfortable and spacious accommodations. Plan to eat out more than eat in as there are wonderful restaurants in the area. There is no hot water but it's not needed...seriously! The property is unique and truly lovely. Alex respects your privacy and is there if you need him and is right next door.
Heaven on Earth
The word paradise only touches on describing this magical place. This breezy house of mahogany, awash with the scent of tropical flowers, this is the stuff dreams are made of. The abundant sunshine, the private beach just steps away, the chatter of wild parakeets that wake you in the morning, the breathtaking sunsets to wish you a goodnight, the magnificent tropical storms, the overwhelming sense of peace. All this and so much more make this place a true heaven on earth.
I stayed for two weeks with my 6 year old son. It was an enchanted journey that we’ll never forget. Alex and Mary were the most gracious of hosts who went over and above to make our stay unforgettable. I can’t recommend this beautiful beach house (or these people) more. This was not a vacation for us but rather a new family tradition!
A True Paradise
I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed my stay in this beautiful place.. From the moment we arrived I was in awe with how perfectly the design of the house flowed with the jungle.. Hearing the sounds of the jungle, the ocean and feeling it's breeze and smelling the fresh flowers that surround it. The space was open and extremely zen. I made sure to take advantage to all of the little spots they created to relax, from the lush hammocks to cute little benches on the beach to enjoy morning coffees or stellar sunsets. Alex and Mary put so much love in the details; from the fresh flowers laid out on the towels to all the staples you'd need to be comfortable and feel at home (awesome blender for morning/afternoon fruit shakes).. An extra bonus was Sarah, the housekeeper.. Always greeting us with a smile. It was so helpful not having to worry about sweeping/laundry so we could relax and enjoy our vacation. One of the most unforgettable experiences I've had.. Would go back in a heart beat!
I spent 10 glorious days here with my two children and their spouses. The ocean facing deck was our main living space. (Pictures do not include the relaxing hammock that also hangs there. ) Mornings were spent sipping coffee on benches at the end of the yard overlooking the beach, while evenings were spent in the same place with sunset cocktails.
Days were for excursions (loved Tortuga Island), swimming on the private beach and quad trips to Santa Teresa. The vacation can be as busy or peaceful as you decide. Be ready for monkeys, iguanas, wild horses and incredibly beautiful birds. The house was secluded and private, yet close to everything one could need. The restaurants were amazing, the food was fresh and delicious (especially Mary's).
Alex and his wife Mary were very helpful whenever we needed something and even set up early morning massages on the deck with Ruth. (best massage I ever had!) The locals could not have been any more welcoming and warm!
We can't wait to return! Pura Vida!
Authentic Costa Rica Experience!!!!
If you want an authentic experience this is the place to stay. It is truly fabulous! What you see is what you get. A beautifully designed and built home that allows you to feel like you are immersed in the wonderful elements of nature that Costa Rica has to offer. You can literally feel like you are outside all the time with the huge beautiful doors that open to the beach. It is very private and you have a beach to yourself (besides the beautiful horse that may gallop through or occasional couple of surfers that are great to watch...or join!) Alex the owner was beyond helpful with anything we needed. The town is a short quad ride down the road. We went in daily to get some food or explore. Mary's restaurant is a one minute walk across the road and is really handy when you don't want to go into town. The food is just fabulous! We probably ate there 3-4 times. We are people that have been to Hawaii many times and took a chance on Costa Rica...it is the laid back, real, authentic, "island feel" that Hawaii probably used to have. All we expected and more! Can't get much better than this!
Stand Up paddle board tours and rentals, snorkelling, tide pools, beach fishing, and coconut watching, bird watching monkey conversations, iguana chasing, tide pool exploring, she'll collecting, sipping a glass of wine at sunset while the breeze caresses you, winning....
