Overview

About the property

Newly Renovated! On 2 Acres, Surrounded By Nature And Gardens. 20 Min From GGB

This cottage is one-of-a-kind. It's lovely, quiet and in an incredible location, central to everything. A perfect base for exploring the Bay Area! San Francisco is 30 min to the south, wine country is 45 min to the north, and all of Marin surrounds you. The cottage is 20 minutes from Golden Gate Bridge, 5 minutes from highway 101 and easy walking distance to brunch or pizza in sweet downtown Kentfield. But here's the kicker: it feels totally removed, a secret oasis. It's on a 2-acre gated property covered with woodlands, redwood groves and gardens, and feels totally private. It's a wonderful place to come home to after a busy day.

The cottage is sweet, spacious and serene. It is newly renovated with brand-new floors and carpeting, and fresh paint throughout. The living room has a new Restoration Hardware queen sleeper sofa - very comfortable for sitting and sleeping. The dining area seats 4. The large flat screen TV comes with a premium cable package. Off the living room is a large redwood deck with Weber grill, very private and lovely. You'll see deer on the lawn outside the front door and hummingbirds off the deck almost every day. A new heating/ AC system will keep you comfortable in any season - though Marin is so mild that you'll mostly just throw the deck doors open and enjoy the fresh air!

The kitchen is simply equipped with all the basics: dishwasher, new fridge, microwave, toaster, pantry essentials.

The bedroom boasts a beautiful new queen-sized solid acacia bed with premium Sealy Posturepedic mattress and high-quality new linens. It has large windows and lovely light.

The bathroom is older and needs renovating, but is clean. It has a shower (no bath), sink and new toilet. The unit also has a separate laundry room with washer/ dryer.

The owners live on the property, in the main house, and are usually available to help with anything you need.

PLEASE NOTE: This unit is down a short set of rather rough, rustic steps. Those with mobility issues should consider this when deciding whether to book.

About Jenny Israel

I am a native of Marin, and love everything about it! Hiking, beach barbecues on Muir Beach, Mountain Home Theater, burritos in the Mission, Fairfax Scoop, wine tasting in Napa... the list goes on and on.

I love Marin even more as I took a long detour from it. Our three children were born and raised in NYC, and I persuaded the family to move back here just last August. Quite the change, brownstone Brooklyn to nature-filled Marin! We love both but are so happy to have landed here.

I am an architect, an artist, and a stay-at-home Mom. I love yoga, hiking, hanging with the family, reading on the porch, and dinner with friends. My husband Sandy is a professional musician and teacher. We are a relaxed, creative family.

My motto? I guess it would be: 'Don't sweat the small stuff.'

Why Jenny Israel chose The Bay Area

A huge attraction of this property is Marin County itself, one of the most magical places on earth. Marin is famous worldwide for it's astounding natural beauty and the huge amount of land protected for public enjoyment. There are few places on the planet where you can hike, mountain bike, surf, sail, horseback ride and camp on thousands of acres of untouched wilderness, all within an hour of a major city. The variety of fun to be had in the area is unmatched: all the restaurants, museums and shopping of SF, the stunning beauty and outdoorsy lifestyle of Marin, plus wine country just 40 minutes north.

Kentfield is a charming little town in central Marin, an area with the mildest, sunniest, most lovely year-round weather you can imagine. It has several very good restaurants, a gourmet market, bike paths, a school with a big field to kick a ball around, and loads of small town charm. It's one of a string of such small towns along the Ross Valley, all very special. I grew up the next town over, in Ross, and have always wanted to come back. Can you tell I love this place?

What makes this cottage unique

I first became intrigued with our property - a main house and two cottages, on two acres - when I heard of it's unique history. The main house was built in 1903 and originally served as a retreat for Catholic nuns and laypeople: pews filled the living spaces, and nuns ate at the long narrow dining table. When I visited, I could feel the serenity that permeates every inch of the property.

The cottages, including the Studio, we're built in the '70's during a very different phase of the property's life. Apparently it became something of a bohemian commune, and these cottages were built to house the overflow of friends and travelers. They are quite wonderful in their relaxed feel, total privacy and serene surroundings. We have tried to retain the sunny, casual vibe of these units, and are happy to be carrying on the tradition of welcoming travelers into them!

A cottage in the town. Super sweet and secluded. Nothing fancy, yet truly elegant in its position

Already thinking of when I could come again to spend more time here. First day upon arrival met up with a beautiful deer munching bushes outside my bedroom window. Quiet. Simple. Perfect.

Nice and spacious cottage, sense of serenity and privacy, yet at a convenient location with easy access to nice restaurants in San Rafael and hiking activities around Mt TAM.

A few corrections would make a big difference. Fix the lock, more silverware, replace chairs

Since there were some very specific instructions about parking, entrance to our unit and rules of use, we had read the check-in information several times. Our parking area provided 3 spaces, one for each unit - should be easy, right. However there was a large security gate to negotiate when backing out of this area, so it was important to keep that in mind. When we arrived, another car was already parked in our area so we parked next to it.

A short walk down a nice path and a few steps down to our unit. I grabbed the door knob after removing the key that was left in the lock for us, and it nearly fell off the door. We found that the only way to secure the door was to use the lock with the key - the knob was non-functioning.

The unit was clean, airy, bright and had a deck off the back door, with a view of a wooded area behind our unit. (We later saw several deer grazing which was wonderful).

Our instructions had stressed that our owners were conscientious about water use and requested that all garbage be separated into four different bins for recycling. The garbage disposal was to be used for liquids only - all edibles were to go into a compost bin or bag. If you are used to serious recycling and composting, this is easy, but some folks may not want to spend the time with it. When we checked out of the unit, we had to carry the various bags up to the parking area where the garbage bins were lined up, and overflowing. We had to just leave them in front of the bins.

We spent several days taking the local commuter bus (there is a bus stop just a few blocks away) into the city and enjoyed the various tourist-type attractions. However, two days in a row we received a text that we needed to move our vehicle, as it was in the wrong spot. We couldn't as we were in downtown San Francisco, and after several text messages back and forth, things were apparently ok. We were very frustrated that something as simple as 3 parking spaces could create so many problems. As the parking area is surrounded by fence, perhaps some distinct marking showing the designed parking spots would be appropriate.

We never met the owners although we texted numerous times.

We used the kitchen several times, but with only silverware for 4 and a request to be water-wise, we used their dinnerware as little as possible.

Some furniture in the unit was shabby and torn and uncomfortable.

We ended up leaving two days early.

Functional, clean and great location

  • 4 of 5

Cottage is one of three on the end of the street. A bit hard to find. Stairs are dark and uneven to the cottage. Inside it is bright, functional and equipped with the basics (minus a hair dryer). It is a short (steep) walk to Woodlands.
