Situated in the beautiful Vale de Rodam, near Marvao and Castelo de Vide and within the Sao Mamede Natural Park.
'Montinho' farm cottage and 'Monte Raza' farmhouse are totally independent adjoining properties which can be let together or separately. The properties share a 12m (1.8m deep) saline swimming pool with lawn and gardens. Together they comfortably sleep 10, ideal for a large family or 2 family groups.
Guests at Raza will be given advice on the best spots in the area to see the different bird species, and you can arrange with Peter to go on a guided tour. A half day trip will cost you the price of the fuel and lunch! You can see a wide range of birds including egrets, vultures, eagles, great and lesser bustard, black-shouldered kite, azure-winged magpie, hoopoe, blue rock-thrush, bee-eaters and many more.
Walking the medieval tracks through the hills is a must, and we will provide you with details. Some tracks start from the house.
Guided walks can be organised as well as self-guided walking maps and notes, with lunches or picnics.
There are 8 mountain-bikes for guests use. The area has many quiet tracks to explore, and maps and advice can be given.
This area is very suitable for serious cycling with good road surfaces, quiet traffic free roads, good and long hill climbs and all amongst the wonderful scenery of the Sao Mamede hills, combined with a good climate and delicious local food and wines.
We can meet groups with their own equipment at Lisbon airport with a minibus and provide backup as required.
Swimming - besides the swimming pool a stones throw from your room, river bathing is available on the River Sever at Portagem and at various lakes in the area, the most convenient being Apartadura (6km) and Barragem do Póvoa (10km). There are superb municipal swimming pools at Castelo de Vide including an indoor heated pool.
Fishing - Bass and Carp fishing on the Caia and Apartadura lakes. Private fishing can be arranged on a 4 hectare Alfarofia lake near Elvas where the Portuguese record carp was caught this year, weighing 24kgs or 52 lbs! You will need a licence which can be obtained in Portalegre.
Horse Riding - Cordero the mule and Improvisto the donkey are residents of Raza and Montinho properties and can be ridden to explore the farm. Riding can be organized locally and a visit to the National Horse Stud at Alter do Chão cannot be missed.
Rock climbing and abseiling under supervision can be arranged nearby.
Montinho is a two-bedroom farm cottage between Marvão and Castelo de Vide within the São Mamede Natural Park. Situated in its own 60 Acres of pastures, oak forest, organic orchard and olive grove, the ground behind the house rises steeply to a rocky hill ridge. Wild boar are endemic to the area as are a wide range of birds of prey. The house sleeps 4.
Fully equipped kitchen with wooden dining table, comfortable sitting room with large stone fireplace and log burner, all under one vaulted chestnut wooden ceiling.
The property is absolutely marvelous for those who are in search for peace and silence. The owners know very well the region and can show you the best walks and tell you about the good restaurants in the villages nearby. The house is all furnished with confort and good taste. The swimming pool is really big (this is not normal in many of the houses we've been to recently) and there are wonderful views to Marvão and its castle. There are bikes available and the roads around are perfect for a ride. I totally recommend it! Last but not least (on the contrary!): Peter and Rosemary, the owners, are wonderful hosts.
We stayed in the cottage for two weeks in August. Our stay could not have been more perfect. The hosts have created an idyllic getaway, and a true home away from home. As comfortable and welcoming as the cottage is, we spent most of our time lounging by the pool and taking meals on the covered patio. It must be mentioned that guests are welcomed and encouraged to pick fresh fruits from the trees in the garden. Our hosts topped our vacation off by giving us a personally guided tour of the region, complete with nature walks and interesting history lessons of Portugal. Who could ask for more? And if you need more incentive, imagine watching a spectacular sunset, sipping a glass of local wine, and listening to the musical clanging of the sheep and goat bells as they are herded home. We could not recommend this more highly. The only note is that you will need a car to reach the wonderful markets, towns and restaurants in the area. And there are many!
The houses have spectacular views of Marvão castle and are situated in 60 Acres of pastures, oak forest, organic orchards and olive groves within the Sao Mamede Natural Park.
Other Activities: birdwatching, guided walks.
