About bob wankmuller

retired, enjoys relaxing in the presence of God's beautiful creation experiencing His peace. enjoy scuba diving, remodeling houses, traveling and family outings. we have a wonderful family and houseboating lake Shasta and visiting Maui are our favorite activities.

bob wankmuller purchased this condo in 2003

Why bob wankmuller chose Maui

Menehune Shores is more secluded than most places on Maui, seeing the ocean and palm trees right in front of you is awesome. it is uncrowded compared to Kaanapali, and offers more private enjoyment of the unobstructed views of the ocean and adjacent islands

What makes this condo unique

you're right there on the ocean, in fact you can't get any closer without getting wet. the quietness of the condo is very restful. the heated pool is a great plus. sleeping on the Lanai to the sound of the ocean, seeing the stars and the moon across the ocean is fantastic.

Good location / nice condo

  • 4 of 5

No. 411 is a nice one bedroom condo in an older building with comfortable furnishings, bed and a fabulous view of the bay. Travelers will find it a respite from the crowds in the Kams. It is close to many wonderful beaches and snorkeling spots, great restaurants, public golf courses, and touring companies. If you Roku, it's possible to connect to the TV. Read the Roku instructions first to make sure you are able to do so (We didn't ) Wi fi is good; appliances in good working order. Two weeks go by quickly. The owner is helpful and goes the extra mile for his renters.

Great view from the private lanai

  • 5 of 5

This was the nicest vrbo experience we've had so far. The condo was clean, uncluttered and the furniture was very comfortable. We spent a lot of time on the lanai. The view was wonderful. We spotted whales, turtles and a couple rainbows.

The condo is centrally located on the island.

We appreciated the responsiveness of Bob and his family to our questions and requests. We plan on returning next year.

Life is what you make of it

  • 5 of 5

Overall, the condo was great and well equipped for our needs.

View:

The view was greater than 180 degrees, elevated about 30+ feet off the ground. You are only 30 feet or so from the ocean as well, so it's all right in front of you. The only issue I had with the view was that the fronds of a palm tree sits right in the middle of it all. I'm sure in 10 years the tree will be taller and thus not block the view, but it is currently a little annoying.

Pool:

Not heated, so it was much cooler than the ocean. Many permanent residents like to lay by the pool during the day, using up almost all of the chairs and making me feel guilty for bringing my 3 year old to splash around for an hour.

Beach:

Great beach. The fishpond protects the beach on premise very nicely. It acts as a barrier for the big waves and leaves nice gentle waves no matter which direction or how hard the wind is blowing. The entire fishpond is walkable, as the deepest I found it was up to my chest (I'm 5'7"). The sea turtles that live in the fishpond are fun to watch, but I would hope that people respect them and keep a certain distance.

Bed:

We found the bed comfortable, though I can see how some might find the mattress pad too soft. If you don't like it, you could always just take the pad off and put it back when you leave.

Futon Pads/No Fold Out Couch:

My assumption was that the couch was a fold out for sleeping, but it turns out there are futon pads in the closet for sleeping on. For an adult, they were not very comfortable. Thankfully it was perfect for my kids, they didn't mind. Just know that as of our time of stay, there was no fold out couch and the pads are somewhat thin.

Lack of AC:

Some have complained that the unit got too hot. There are many fans as well as ways to open windows. If you open the window in the bedroom, it gives some great cold air at night. Yes, outside that window is the walkway, but such is life. My advice, just open some windows, leave your winter pajamas at home, and enjoy the weather, it's why you're there.

Condo Extras:

The condo had beach toys for our kids, some nice beach chairs, some basic kitchen necessities, binoculars, and some basic bathroom necessities. It was nice to have those ready and waiting for us.

Location:

Central to pretty much anything you would want.

Condo Overall:

Yes, it needs some updates and the carpet has some stains. It's still a nice condo and I highly recommend it.

Thanks Bob!

The property was in a good location and the view was great

  • 2 of 5

The first impression we had was the fan in the bedroom would not turn on. We contacted the owner and finally got the fan working(they offered to have us buy a fan and they would reimburse us. The carpet had big stains in it, the couch had no support left in it. With no air conditioning and 87 degrees out it was not easy to sleep and the bed was very soft which we weren't used to. If the unit would have a sleeper couch so you could sleep in the main room it would have been better as there is no cross ventilation unless you open the window by the bed and people walking by can look in. in closing I would not rent this again

Owner's Response: October was unseasonably warm this year and I'm very sorry you had trouble with the fan. The switch on the wall is a bit complicated. I will have that replaced. The couch isn't very old and was from Costco. I love the reclining feature. However, we just had to replace the same couch two months ago in another condo. I will get this one replaced as well. The pathway outside the bedroom doesn't get much traffic and the window has horizontal blinds that allow privacy if you want the crosswind in the bedroom. In the closet there are mats and bedding provided for those who want to sleep near the lanai or on the lanai and listen to the ocean. I appreciate that you brought these issues to my attention.

Spectacular View, Great Accommodations, Good Value

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this lovely Condo October 1-10, 2016. The view absolutely takes your breath away. It is on the 4th floor (accessed by elevator) and is in about the center of the complex, giving you the perfect panoramic view. It's like you have your own private palm tree....which sets the scene for some post card-like pictures of beautiful sunsets and sunrises.

The lanai is a wonderful place to eat, hang out, or take a nap on the futon mats that are provided. Sleep out under the stars if you want....and listen to the ocean all night. One word of advice, if you're prone to getting mosquito-type bites, you might protect yourself with a little bug spray after sunset. I got quite a few bites, my husband didn't get any. So, there ya go....

The kitchen is fully equipped and all the beach & picnic items you'll want are provided as well (except for snorkeling gear). Bob was very responsive to our one tiny little maintenance issue, and it was fixed promptly. There is a book shelf with information about the island including "Maul Revealed" and a "tour" CD that can be played if you take the road to Hana.

The BBQs down by the pool are very handy...we used them 3 times. There are more on the rooftop, although we did not use them. The stairs at the front of the property literally step down into the water, and with a few steps to the right you are on a small beach. There is a group that can take you out in the outrigger canoes every MWF at 7am, and only asks for a small donation to the Pacific Whale Foundation.

But the best kept secret (and our favorite) is the "fish pond" as the locals call it. It is that area you see in the photographs that is a semi-circle of rip-rap rock. The "pond" is very shallow (between knees and waist) with a total sandy bottom. Take your snorkel gear out around the inner portion (and outer portion if you want) and you will likely see a number of turtles along the rocks (fish too). Be careful if you are walking around without the benefit of a mask, because you might step on them, as they look just like rocks when they are resting on the sandy floor. My husband and I went out twice, and saw several each time.

We had a wonderful time. We were so sorry to leave, and will definitely be back!

Great condo, owner is fabulous to work with!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 3rd time staying here and once again it did not disappoint. Incredible views, easy beach access, quiet and relaxing pool, close proximity to local gems, and a fully stocked condo that makes you feel right at home. The accommodations are very comfortable and the new aerobed was a fabulous upgrade! Bob, the owner, is truly a joy to work with and always makes us feel like our satisfaction is his top priority. Thanks Bob for providing such a great place for us to enjoy paradise. Mahalo!
