Overview

About the property

Modern house with all amenities in fantastic location.

La Casa de Azules was completed in November of 2015. The project was a collaborative effort between myself (a custom home builder with over 30 years experience), renowned architect Donald Loria, and long-time Nosara builder Juan Bermudez and his team of talented craftsmen. The goal from the start was to combine the clean lines of modern architecture with the traditional use of local tropical hardwoods throughout. High end finishes like granite countertops throughout, stainless steel appliances, and furniture custom built by local artisans round out the house to make a serene oaisis in the jungle. It turned out better than any of us could've expected.

Having traveled regularly to Nosara since 1999, I've made numerous local friends and learned the idiosyncrasies of Nosara. Too often I stayed in hotels with low quality mattresses and bedding. All of the mattresses at La Casa de Azules are top of the line pillowtop with imported linens and more pillows than you could ever want. Water outages were a frequent occurrence so I installed a back up system to assure a constant water supply (there's nothing worse than coming home after a long day on the beach and not being able to take a shower or flush a toilet). To the water supply I added a softening system as well as a dedicated purification line to a special faucet at the kitchen sink and ice maker.

While generally safe with the use of common sense, petty crime and home break ins are unfortunately not unheard of in Nosara. As such the house is built entirely to the lot lines and with security in mind. There is a steel swing gate at the front entry as well as a steel roll-up gate to the front parking pad. There are 4 closed circuit security cameras and motion sensor lights at the exterior. Each bedroom has its own safe and the large storage bodega also has a steel door for large items like surf boards and bicycles.

Another thing I noticed in my travels was that there was no code enforcement in CR. Railings in particular gave me concern. It wasn't uncommon to see 2nd and 3rd floor balconies with the barest minimum of safety railings. All bedrooms at La Casa de Azules have a balcony and all balcony railings are built to US standards so there is no chance of a toddler crawling off the edge. The pool in the central courtyard can be closed off too.

The pool is the highlight of the house. While not huge it is perfect for the space and completely private, nobody from adjoining or nearby properties can see in. At approximately 8 feet wide and 19 feet long I designed so I could dive in after a long day of fishing on the ocean. When I'm there I also start and end each day with a refreshing plunge in the pool. The courtyard is open to the sky and dominated by a towering Guanacaste tree that plays frequent host to the local howler monkeys and tropical birds. There is an outdoor shower adjacent to the pool as well as another outdoor shower in the front yard with a foot wash for rinsing beach sand.

The house has a landline telephone for local calls, wifi internet, cable television (there is a wall-mounted 42" flat screen in the living room), and a Chromecast device on the TV for streaming Netflix and Youtube. There are a total of 7 ceiling fans throughout the house as well as an A/C unit in each bedroom and one in the living room.

Trip of a lifetime!!!!

  • 3 of 5

5 STARS!!! First of all John was amazing to work with. He gave us so much detailed information in preparation for the trip that we had no issues along the way. We flew into Liberia airport and had a shuttle bus waiting for us (booked through John's friend at Nosara Taxilicious). The bus was air conditioned and it took about 2 hours to arrive at the house. We stopped in Nicoya (as suggested by the property manager) at a larger grocery store to pick up some food and drinks. When we arrived at the house it was everything that we expected and more. The house is stunning, the pictures do not do it justice. It is light filled, open and airy. The split level of the bedrooms provides for a very luxurious feel. The attention to detail and finishes were awesome. The pool is perfect to cool off in and provides an excellent communal area connected by the balconies and outdoor dining area. The kitchen was fully equipped and the tap water was filtered (as I learned is true throughout most of the area). The air conditioners worked great and we barely used them (just at night while sleeping). The beds were very comfortable and there was more then enough extra linens, pillows and towels. Overall the house was exceptionally clean and comfortable and provided for a great home base. Once you leave the house everything you will need is within walking distance. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, shops within a few blocks. There is an awesome skate park that hosts evening parties around the corner. The beach is a short walk away and is truly breath taking. We opted for surfing lessons (Juan Surfo's is awesome) as well as yoga classes. We also made friends with some locals who took us on an excursion to a few of the other beaches in the area which are equally as gorgeous. We were able to snorkel and watch the sunset at a black sand beach. The food was so fresh and delicious and affordable. Between the gorgeous house, amazing natural terrain and amazingly friendly people this has been the best trip I have had as of yet! My group and I are planning on making a stay at Casa Azules an annual tradition. You can't go wrong with this place or playa guiones.

Owner's Response: Wow Maryam! Thanks for the great review. Not sure why it showed up as 3 stars though? It's especially rewarding to know that all the hard work I put into designing and constructing the house, as well as communicating with my guests beforehand to ensure a fun-filled trip, has come to fruition. This is my first rental property and I have found that I really love working and conversing with prospective renters who are as excited as I am about Nosara specifically and Costa Rica in general. I look forward to meeting you in person someday soon! Thanks again-John

Awesome house, beautiful beach!

  • 5 of 5

From the incredible jungle landscape and never ending stars after a gorgeous sunset over a warm ocean horizon, it became clear to me what a truly beautiful place I was experiencing! I had the pleasure of staying in a place that you could only dream of. Eight minutes walk to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world! Designed by John Maysak, the house was literally the talk of the town! With a swimming pool in the middle of the house, custom crafted furniture throughout the entire home, and spacious and comfortable rooms, it can only be described as breathtaking! Enjoy a fresh coconut on your way to the beach. Meet the many wonderful locals who become friends. Don't forget, the best fishing in the world! Casa De Azules is nothing short of the best place I have ever stayed!

Owner's Response: Full Disclosure: Eric is a very dear friend of mine who I have know for almost 40 years. He is also a master carpenter. He was part of a group of old friends and my brother that came down in November 2015 immediately after the house was completed to stay with me. We took the house for the inaugural test drive and kicked the proverbial first dent in the door. We both found ourselves walking around in the middle of the night checking out all the little details that make this house special. My builder and design team did an exceptional job. When planning a trip to Nosara I hope you will consider my house. I am happy and eager to answer any questions you may have-John

February

La Casa De Azuelas is one of the most tranquil places I've ever stayed. The home is comfortable and relaxing. It is centrally located to restaurants and the beach. The pool area is the best feature as we spent most of our days lounging by the pool in the sun after mornings of surfing. I would definitely return for another week as would the rest of my group. I highly recommend La Casa De Azuelas to anyone planning to stay in Playa Guiones.

Loved our stay here!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time at casa de azules! We stayed here with our two small children and found the house perfect for our family. The owner was not only responsive through the plan in process but helped us get our vacation together before we even arrived. So kind and helpful. We hope to return to the house again soon!

Great surfing vacations in Playa Guiones

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in Casa del Azules. We particularly liked the short walk to the Beach (around 8 mn) going through the small town, and how quiet the house was, especially at night. The design of the house is perfect for a summer vacation. The little pool inside the patio is especially pleasant. Was nice to take a dip after returning from the Beach to remove the salt from our skin. The lounging area next to the pool is also very welcome, we spent a lot of time there. The house is in perfect state, and the kitchen appliances are top notch. Rooms are also nice, with comfortable bedding, nice furniture and effective air conditioning units (can be warm at night sometimes). The small private courtyard before the entrance is most convenient and a secure place to leave the beach gear (umbrella, beach towels, game,etc...). We also left our three surfboards there at night too. Of note a very nice Restaurant opened next door in December, it is called La Casa and has a very nice offering of local product-based food in a splendid setting. We hope we can come back to Caza del Azules soon
