Overview

About the property

Ideal location, 1 blk to beach, 1 blk to river, serene, immaculate and charming

Bob Vila, of the celebrated PBS series This Old House, recommended "15 Beach Bungalows for Your Next Vacation" on his popular website. Scout's Cottage was listed as one of these fifteen vacation beach bungalows. The list included such popular vacation spots as Australia, Florida, Hawaii, and California to name a few. He describes Scout's Cottage as, "Not only is the cottage lovely, but it's rife with historical flavor...ideal." He also states it possesses, "..comfort, affordability and above all, close proximity to a fun and restorative beach."

Historic Scout's Cottage. The entire beach home is yours! A century-old unique 1,065 sq. ft. Historic Cottage. One of a kind collections, original artwork and souvenirs in every room. Immaculate!

Fantastic location. Our beach cottage is located on a dead-end street. Serene. Lovely neighborhood with no motels, hotels, or condos; just a wonderfully friendly neighborhood close to everything.

Our cottage is beautifully maintained inside and outside. Professionally landscaped front and backyard. Hot tub. One minute to beach. Downtown is 2 minutes away by car. Close to Estuary. 2 blocks to Promenade.

I'd be delighted to help you plan your get-away to Oregon’s oldest family beach resort, Seaside. Relax and have some well-deserved fun! I'm Kay and my husband Ron and I own and manage this special beach home. This is definitely a ‘mom and pop’ run business. And that’s just the way we want it. No middle person to deal with, no large management team adding extra fees to pay for a rotating staff’s salaries.

Here's some recent compliments Scout's Cottage has received from our guests' reviews. “Charming and comfortable! The beds were absolutely amazing. The towels were divine. Highly recommend." "Absolutely wonderful time. So cozy. Had everything we needed. In the perfect location." "All the resources Kay sent ahead of time were so helpful. I can't thank her enough. We used them as our guide for what to do and where to explore."

THE COTTAGE:

Large country-size Kitchen and spacious Living Room. A sunny Sun Porch. A Back Porch with washer/dryer. Generous-sized Bathroom with claw-foot bathtub. Two delightful Bedrooms upstairs. Perfect for up to six guests. Three real beds. There is also a queen size sofa-sleeper in the living room.

DETAILS OF THE ROOMS:

Sun Porch: Open the front door to Scout's Cottage and the first room to welcome you is the Sun Porch surrounded with large glass windows, shiny hardwood floor, glossy white wood walls, books, sofa, chairs, a wooden doll house, toys, games, umbrellas, and even walking sticks.

Kitchen: Spacious, sunny and unique. Our guests say this is their dream Kitchen! A large glass-front cupboard is filled with a wide choice of colorful vintage dinnerware, ranging from 1950s restaurant dishes to 1960s promotional plastic ware. The Kitchen's highlight is the stainless steel six burners gas Decor stove. All the expected modern appliances are here, including a microwave, coffeemaker, full-size refrigerator, and dishwasher. The specially designed shelves hold vintage souvenir salt & pepper shakers; on the walls are brightly colored 1950s fruit chalk-ware, Oregon coastal memorabilia including the beloved Oregon Pixie Kitchen, a reclaimed neon bakery sign and a large country table which seats eight.

Bathroom: Downstairs, spacious with a combination claw foot bathtub/shower combination. All the toweling, shampoo and hand soaps, hairdryer and mirrors are provided.

Living Room: Large and comfortable. The walls are filled with historic photographs, original artwork and a reclaimed local mural. The original dark-wood paneled walls with 9 windows open easily to let in the refreshing ocean air! A large red enamel gas fireplace keeps you warm through any changes in the coastal weather.

Want to relax and watch a movie? Our film library holds over 400+ movies and is curated by the owner of Clinton Street Video Store in Portland. We also stock a wide variety of CDs for music fans. There's a library of novels and non-fiction reading, including books about the Lewis and Clark Expedition along with local authors.

Collector's Bedroom (upstairs): The bed is queen size with cotton sheets, blankets and quilts to keep you warm. We reclaimed a large painted mural that originally hung above a long-time favorite souvenir shop in downtown Seaside. In the middle of this painted local landscape is the word 'Collectors'. This describes the room perfectly! There are dozens of historic photographs of Oregon shipwrecks, Oregon coastal maps, and local photographs taken of the town and its people over a 100 year period.

Another wall is covered with dozens of 1940s vintage wooden plaques. If you've never seen these whimsical images you'll surely enjoy reading what is carved or written on them. Very popular in the early part of the 1900s up to the early 1960s, these souvenir plaques were one of the first vacation souvenirs that families would pick up as they traveled in their cars from state to state.

Paradise Bedroom (upstairs): The other section of the painted mural resides in this pretty room. It has the painted word 'Paradise' on it. Paradise describes this room quite nicely. Homemade quilts are on each of the beds. There is a double-size bed and a standard-twin size bed in the bedroom. On one wall is a collection of vintage souvenir state plates, on another wall are turn of the century tin-foil artwork known as reverse painting with tinsel and dates back to Victorian time.

Back Porch: Contains the washer and dryer, and washing supplies. Iron and ironing board. No coin operated machines here.

Yard: Fully landscaped backyard with hot tub, patio furniture, large oval patio, and gas BBQ gives you additional extended space to enjoy both day and night.

LOCATION:

Quiet closed-end street. However, within a minute you can be at the beach (1 block), on the Promenade (1.5 blocks), or at the 12th Avenue Bridge overlooking the Necanicum River (1.5 blocks). The Convention Center and Downtown are within walking distance or a 2-4 minute drive.

Scout's Cottage is located next to charming Historic Birdie's Cottage (VRBO #410151). You can rent both cottages which accommodate up to 9 guests. Our cottages are over 100 years old, with a combination of unique vintage 'souvenir' collections and modern conveniences in every room.

"Enjoy the clear ocean air of one of the world's most beautiful beaches." NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC. Seaside is THE seashore destination for experiencing popular year-round attractions. And staying at our cottage will complete your perfect vacation or weekend getaway.

About Kay Slusarenko

We are a Portland Architect and a Portland Artist who have owned this special cottage (Scout's Cottage) and a smaller cottage next door (Birdie's Cottage) since 1976. The cottages are over 100 years old. We have loved caring for them and have been especially delighted that our passion for our two cottages extends to our guests' cherished visits to them over the past years.

Kay Slusarenko purchased this house in 1976

Why Kay Slusarenko chose Seaside

CLOSE TO PORTLAND, Seaside is perfectly located to give visitors immediate access to a tremendous variety of activities. White sandy clean beaches, whale watching sites, historic cities (Astoria), historic landmark lighthouses, and a nearby Bird Estuary are just a few of the reasons our family is passionate about this coastal paradise.

In 1970, we moved to Portland, Oregon. One of our main reasons for picking Portland was the ability to get to the coast and to the mountains in 1-2 hours.

We often traveled with our children up and down the Oregon Coast, but our favorite coastal town was Seaside.

We all fell in love with the community and the variety of activities that was suited to us individually and collectively as a family.

In 1976, we purchased the cottage which had originally been a part of a popular Drive-In Motor Court. It had served as the manager's home. Unfortunately, a fire ravaged the majority of the motor court's buildings in the mid-50s. Our cottage and a smaller structure survived.

Over the years we have remodeled it and equipped it with our own style of furnishings and collections. And now we proudly share it with you.

What makes this house unique

BESIDES THE OPPORTUNITY TO STAY IN A UNIQUE SEASIDE COTTAGE, adventures of historical significance and current outdoor activities abound in Seaside and nearby areas. You never have to go far to find an adventure or activity that is awe-inspiring! In Seaside you are surrounded by biking and walking paths both in the nearby forests and along the oceanfront; the Necanicum River, the Pacific Ocean, clean sandy beaches, the famous promenade, the downtown shopping area plus the factory outlet (NO STATE TAX!) is just a nod to all the possibilities.

Seaside is where you can rent a surrey or a mountain bike, build sandcastles, throw frisbees, fly kites, play soccer and volleyball in the sand and dip your toes into the cool Pacific Ocean under the watchful eye of the summer lifeguard -on-duty.

Watch the surfers or join them, find the best trails, the best food, the best clam chowder and fish and chips. Paddle boats, kayaks are waiting to be rented just a few blocks from the cottage. In fact, 90% of all these above-mentioned activities are within a few minutes walk or drive from our cottage! Last but not least is the importance of soaking up some historical information that makes the history of Seaside and the area come alive. Recognizing that Lewis and Clark walked through our neighborhood to reach the nearby ocean is pretty inspiring and nearby towns like Astoria are filled with museums and historical Victorian homes opened to the public. The Fort Clatsop Park and the hike from the Fort to the Sea Trail is only the beginning of a deeper understanding of our country's west coast history. And after hiking, shopping, eating, walking, surfing, body boarding, feeding the seals, playing in the sand you always have the perfect beach home to return to and soak in the hot tub, watch the sunset, decide which of the 400 plus movies from the video library collection you wish to watch and best of all to relax, enjoy and recharge.

We loved our stay at Scout Cottage in Seaside. Kay was so helpful with suggestions before we arrived and the house is perfectly set up for an amazing stay. It is clean, comfortable, and in a great location to enjoy Seaside and other surrounding coastal towns.

Adorable cottage with all the amenities!

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriends and I had a Beach Bachelorette getaway and we had an amazing weekend! Kay was so helpful and kind with planning. The historic house is immaculate and so cozy we loved the plush beds and private hottub. We had all the comforts of home with the ability to make blended margaritas and fish tacos on the gas range!

Owner's Response: Dear Lauren, Thank you for sending me photos of the party for your dear friend. The decorations were so cute! You did such a great job of respecting our home and taking great care not to damage or alter any of our belongings. It didn't even look like you had been there!! I hope you'll all return together again or separately in the future. You all will definitely be welcomed to either of our cottages at anytime. With gratitude, Kay

Coziest Dream Cottage on the Coast

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Scout's Cottage for two nights for a romantic getaway from the city. The price was right and I was immediately encouraged by the quick, friendly, and thorough responses from owner Kay Slusarenko.

The cottage itself is like a dream. We could not have been happier with it. Each part of the house has a different personality and they are all captivating. The kitchen is fully stocked with every tool and gadget and spice and oil you could need and has a giant gourmet gas stove that is a joy to use. Plus there's coffee in the freezer! Pull the blinds and let the red neon Bakery sign be the only source of light in this brightly painted from full of interesting knick knacks (including a charming Salt and pepper shaker collection), and you can totally forget the outside world exists.

The upstairs bedrooms are cozy and feel like a walk back through time. There are a host of images serving as reminders of the area's history. Also the sheets are very very soft and cozy!

The living room is the coziest of all, with dark stained wood and exposed beams and a warm cast iron gas "wood" fireplace. The collection of DVDs supplied by Clinton Street Video and CDs from Jackpot Records are well curated and provided hours of entertainment! There was a peace and calm to the room which melted any worries away!

We didn't take advantage of the hot tub but the lights surrounding it were very inviting and the instructions for use are easy to follow.

I very strongly recommend Scout's Cottage!

Owner's Response: Aaron - you have written such a lovely heartfelt review which I'm sure readers will be delighted to read. Thank you for sharing with others. My family has their favorite times to visit Seaside and ironically none of them are the same. One son enjoys the summer with all the activities that he can travel to and take advantage of; another son is adamant that the best time to visit Seaside is in the Fall with the smell of Autumn in the air and the more relaxed ambience found in Seaside as well as in nearby Astoria. And our youngest son and his wife love the opportunity to bring their school-aged child to the coast during three days mini-getaways in the early spring. He says it allows him to get away from the pressures of his work schedule and to recharge. For his family it is a time to just have FUN.

Owner's Response: Patrick - Thank you for being a wonderful guest. Winter visits to Seaside can be absolutely delightful with all the fun of exploring and the opportunity to enjoy our comfortable beach home as you would encounter during any of the other seasons! And with the great advantage of not having to deal with crowds and long waits which naturally occur during the summer months. Kay

Great Location

Scout’s Cottage is an ideal place to stay - quiet neighborhood, historic building and meticulously clean. It’s close to the boardwalk ... we could walk anywhere in Seaside, and Kay provided us with great information. Her recommendations were so appreciated — don’t miss Camp 18 and Astoria!

Owner's Response: Pat, You are such a great guest! I hope to have you return often. Thank you for complementing the information that you received from me. I believe that one of the most important things I can do for every guest is to have as much relevant information available as is possible. That is why I write my monthly "Seaside and Beyond Guide". There's always so much to see and to do. It doesn't matter if you visit in the middle of summer or the middle of winter, there are always places to visit, new experiences to encounter and more restaurants opening! So thank you for such a nice compliment. I love hosting and I continue to say that we have THE BEST GUESTS who choose to stay with us. My sincere thanks, Kay

Cozy cottage

  • 4 of 5

This is our 3rd time staying at Scouts. We always enjoy the homey feel and the close proximity to the beach. They have added some nice touches to the back yard recently.

My only disclaimer is if u are claustrophobic or over 150 lbs the shower can be quite the experience! It's a darling claw foot tub with shower curtains surrounding both sides, and they have a tendency to stick to your back and/or front side while showering. Also, I was there with my 76 yr old mother who found it hard to climb into the claw foot without slipping or losing balance.

Having said that I do recommend Scouts as a nice vacation getaway.

Here's a few suggestions of must-do activities in Seaside for the entire family. But please know this is just a hint of what is possible!

I write a newsletter monthly that spells out the events of each month, suggests adventures of historical significance and current outdoor activities and the very best of indoor pleasures. In Seaside you are surrounded by biking and walking paths both in the nearby forests and along the oceanfront; the Necanicum River, the Pacific Ocean, clean sandy beaches, the famous promenade, the downtown shopping area plus the factory outlet (NO STATE TAX!) is just a nod to all the possibilities that I write about.
