Unlike any vacation rental you've ever experienced! Large kitchen and comfortable living room. A sunny sun porch. A back porch with washer/dryer. Bathroom with claw-foot bathtub. Two special bedrooms upstairs. Perfect for up to six guests. Three real beds. There is also a queen size sofa-sleeper in the living room.

Historic Scout's Cottage is located on a quiet closed-end street. However, within minutes you can be at the beach (1 block), on the Promenade (1.5 blocks), or fishing and crabbing at the 12th Avenue Bridge overlooking the Necanicum River (1.5 blocks). The Convention Center and Downtown are within walking distance or a 2-4 minute drive.

Scout's Cottage is located next to cozy Historic Birdie's Cottage (VRBO #410151). You can rent both cottages which accommodate up to 9 guests. Our cottages are over 100 years old, with a combination of unique vintage 'souvenir' collections and modern conveniences in every room.

Fully landscaped backyard gives you an additional "room" to enjoy both day and night.

The Sun Porch: Open the front door to Scout's Cottage and the first room to welcome you is the sun porch surrounded with large glass windows, shiny hardwood floor, glossy white wood walls, books, sofa, chairs, a wooden doll house, toys, games, umbrellas, and even walking sticks.

The Kitchen: Spacious, sunny and unique. Our guests say this is their dream kitchen! A large glass front cupboard is filled with a wide choice of colorful vintage dinnerware, ranging from 1950s restaurant dishes to 1960s promotional plastic ware. The kitchen's highlight is the stainless steel six burners gas Decor stove. All the expected modern appliances are here, including a microwave, coffeemaker, full-size refrigerator, and dishwasher. There's specially designed shelves that hold our vintage souvenir salt & pepper shakers; on the wall are brightly colored 1950s fruit chalk-ware, Oregon coastal memorabilia, a reclaimed neon sign and a large country table which seats eight.

The Bathroom: Downstairs, spacious with a combination claw foot bathtub/shower combination. All the toweling, shampoo and hand soaps are provided.

The Back Porch: Contains the washer and dryer, and washing supplies. Iron and ironing board. No coin operated machines here.

The Living Room: Large and comfortable. The walls are filled with historic photographs, original artwork and a reclaimed mural. The original dark-wood paneled walls with 9 windows open easily to let in the refreshing ocean air! A large red enamel gas fireplace keeps you warm through any changes in the coastal weather.

We have a fantastic collection of movies to enjoy. We always have 400+ movies at the cottage and curate the collection once a year. We also stock a wide variety of CDs for music fans. There's a library of novels and non-fiction reading, especially books about the Lewis and Clark Expedition along with local authors.

Collector's Bedroom: The bed is queen size with cotton sheets, blankets and quilts to keep you warm. We reclaimed a large painted mural that originally hung above a long-time favorite souvenir shop in downtown Seaside. In the middle of this painted local landscape is the word 'Collectors'. This describes the room perfectly! There are dozens of historic photographs of Oregon shipwrecks, Oregon coastal maps, and local photographs taken of the town and its people over a 100 year period.

One wall is covered with dozens of 1940s vintage wooden plaques. If you've never seen these whimsical images you'll surely enjoy reading what is carved or written on them. Very popular in the early part of the 1900s up to the 1960s, these souvenir plaques were one of the first vacation souvenirs that families would pick up as they traveled in their cars from state to state.

Paradise Bedroom: The other section of the painted mural resides in this pretty room. It has the painted word 'Paradise' on it. We think this word describes this room quite nicely. Homemade quilts are on each of the beds. There is a double size bed and a standard twin size bed in the bedroom. On one wall is a collection of vintage souvenir state plates, on another wall are turn of the century tin-foil artwork known as reverse painting with tinsel and dates back to Victorian time.

We are very proud of Scout's Cottage and are committed to making your stay with us a memorable one.

SEASIDE: 'Enjoy the clear ocean air of one of the world's most beautiful beaches.' NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC. Seaside is THE seashore destination for experiencing popular year-round attractions. And staying at our cottage will complete your perfect vacation or weekend getaway.

About Kay Slusarenko

We are a Portland Architect and a Portland Artist who have owned this special cottage (Scout's Cottage) and a smaller cottage next door (Birdie's Cottage) since 1976. The cottages are over 100 years old. We have loved caring for them and have been especially delighted that our passion for our two cottages extends to our guests' cherished visits to them over the past years.

Kay Slusarenko purchased this house in 1976

Why Kay Slusarenko chose Coastal Oregon

Seaside is perfectly located to give visitors immediate access to a tremendous variety of activities. White sandy clean beaches, whale watching sites, historic cities (Astoria), historic landmark lighthouses, and a nearby Bird Estuary are just a few of the reasons our family is passionate about this coastal paradise.

In 1970, we moved to Portland, Oregon. One of our main reasons for picking Portland was the ability to get to the coast and to the mountains in 1-2 hours.

We often traveled with our children up and down the Oregon Coast, but our favorite coastal town was Seaside.

We all fell in love with the community and the variety of activities that was suited to us individually and collectively as a family.

In 1976, we purchased the cottage which had originally been a part of a popular Drive-In Motor Court. It had served as the manager's home. Unfortunately, a fire ravaged the majority of the motor court's buildings in the mid-50s. Our cottage and a smaller structure survived.

Over the years we have remodeled it and equipped it with our own style of furnishings and collections. And now we proudly share it with you.

Utterly charming

  • 5 of 5

We always VRBO because we like the uniqueness of each place we stay. I can honestly say that Kay has thought of EVERYTHING! Extra batteries, check. Beach towels, check. Things for kids, check. Exactly where every heater is and how to work them, check. Movies, music, TV and internet, check. This was our first weekend away as a couple in four YEARS and the weather was awful. We snuggled into this little house and didn't want for a thing! Thanks Kay!

Charming cottage by the sea

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time in this charming cottage by the sea. Our family of 4 was able to explore Seaside, Cannon beach and Astoria. The owner, Kay, sent me a plethora of information on things to do, places to eat, etc. It was like having my own travel guide. The cottage was clean, comfortable and cozy. It is full of antiques to explore as well as books, games, and a dvd collection that would put Red Box to shame. It was the perfect place to come home to after a day of site seeing. I would highly recommend Scout's Cottage to anyone visiting the area.

Charming, warm and cozy

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Scouts Cottage. Kay was very responsive and accommodating. The house is filled with memorabilia from by-gone days and takes you back to a simpler place and time, while having all the modern amenities including a hot tub and wonderful gas fireplace/heater. Kitchen is well equipped for cooks, and the details are amazing down to the children's books and toys for the little ones. And the amazing array of movies. We will be back!

It was a wonderful celebration of a friend's end of cancer treatment and our birthdays!

Fantastic family get away

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Scout's Cottage. My family (wife and I and kids ages 9 and 7) stayed for three nights and we were all ready to move in permanently.

First, the beds. They were INCREDIBLE! I never sleep well in strange beds, but the beds in this house were so amazing I slept better than I do at home. Ample pillows, comfy blankets, just all-around perfection.

The house was just as advertised - super cute kitchen with everything we needed (including things that other vacation homes have, but are often suspect - like creepy 100 year old cookie sheets). It had nice, clean utensils, cookware, etc. The hot tub was fantastic - it felt like a little retreat in the back yard. The video library had something for everyone, which is rare with our family! We all loved the decor - the kids took great pleasure in finding the little nooks and crannies with odd collectibles tucked away (the tiny tea set cabinet was a big hit). I personally really liked all the old trophies.

Kay, the owner, was great. A few weeks before our stay she sent us emails with details we needed about the house, but also tons of information about things to do in the area, restaurants to go to, and all sorts of stuff that we would have otherwise had to dig up on our own. We could tell by the decor in the house and the thoroughness of Kay's communications that this was a well-cared for place that the owners loved to share.

We will undoubtedly book this house the next time we plan a trip to Seaside.

Owner's Response: Jay, You were such a wonderful family and I hated to see you leave! It is hard to put into words how much your review means to Ron, to me and our wonderful housekeeper, Barb. This is the full extent of our passionate "team". Ron and I celebrate our 50th year of marriage this year. We still feel that one of the highlights during all these years was the day we bought a dilapidated historic house that the city of Seaside was ready to tear down. We worked so hard to create a unique beach "home" that our family could enjoy year after year. We love Scout's Cottage and we love sharing it with families such as yours. Again, thank you for taking the time to write such a beautiful and heartfelt review. Kay

Excellent as always.

  • 5 of 5

Once again we had a great time at Scout's Cottage. This time I invited my parents to come along; the house felt plenty big even with 5 people staying in the house and we were able to play boardgames in the living room as a whole family, no problem. We love going to the coast during the winter as there are fewer crowds, but it is especially nice to come back from the beach to a nice, cosy cabin with a fireplace and a hot tub waiting for you. My only complaints (and they are very VERY minor): the flashlight was low on battery and died before we could do an evening walk at the beach. And the knives are dull (I had a hard time chopping onion for chili).

Owner's Response: Hi Kalinakay, I'm delighted that you chose to visit our cottage again. It was especially great that you could include your parents in this trip. It sounds like you had a wonderful time. I agree with you on the month that you visited the coast. The winter months are a wonderful time to take advantage of the lowest prices. Some beach homes aren't equipped to keep winter guests comfortable. That is why we are especially proud of our gas fireplaces and other heat resources that keep the cottage warm and snug. I'm also so happy that we can offer our guests a 4 person hot tub. It is especially fun to enjoy this when the weather is cooler! I'm sorry that you didn't see the box of batteries that are in the cupboard near the flashlights! Also, I remember the last time you visited, you recommended that we get a knife sharpener...and we did. It was in the drawer with the knives. I hope you'll be able to return again in the future. Happy New Year! Kay

Scout Cottage was PERFECT!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Scout Cottage for our 3rd annual girls trip. The cottage was amazing. We loved the ambience of the back yard and hot tub! The cottage was close to town, adorable, homey, and had plenty of room for our trip. We will most definitely be looking to book here again! Thank you for allowing us to spend time in your beautiful home!

Scout's Cottage is in an ideal location. Located on a dead-end street, our neighborhood is serene even in the busy summer months! Walk ONE BLOCK and you will arrive at a lovely secluded section of the beach with an amazing view of the ocean. Walk along the North beach just a bit longer and you'll be at the Necanicum Estuary, home to all sorts of birds and creatures small, such as the soft shelled clam and big, such as the herd of elk that often roam in the grass.

Our cottage's wonderful location is less than two blocks to the famous Seaside Promenade. This broad sidewalk leads you directly along the oceanfront into downtown Seaside. It is a lovely walk at all times of the day. But if you choose to ride a two, three or four wheeled vehicles then you need only walk 1 minute (0.3 mi) from the cottage's front door to the Prom Rental Bike Shop. This family-owned business is one of Oregon's oldest bike shops. There's a huge assortment of beach and street fun vehicles for both adults and kids (infants on up). Their website is: www.prombikeshop.com/rentals.
