Space 1,008 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 Bath Beachfront Cottage On Upper Silver Lake

Rental from Friday (4 pm) to Friday (noon) Rowboat and kayaks available to rent with your stay (additional fee).

This is the place to make those wonderful family memories! The first thing you'll see when you step inside is the many-windowed wall of the house that faces gorgeous Upper Silver Lake. Walk out of the slider onto huge decks that have many chairs to choose from so you can sunbathe or sit in the shade in comfort. The large, sandy beach is perfect for setting up the volleyball net and playing a game or two. There is a fire ring and a picnic table on the beach. The dock provides a place to fish from or a place to tie up to. Jump off the floating dock (no diving, water is only five to six feet deep). Great Lake for fishing, skiing and tubing. For swimming, please note that the bottom of the lake is soft and not pleasant to walk on after about waist-deep, a typical Michigan lake. HOWEVER, there is a lovely public lot just down our street with a playground and a large, very shallow area with a sandy bottom (see last picture) that is nice for little swimmers. Floaties, life jackets, and sand and water toys are stored in the boat house for you to use. You can rent our 12 ft. Aluminum rowboat for $50 for the week or up to four kayaks for $40 each or $150 for all four (see Rental Agreement).

For family time inside, there are books and magazines on the shelves, as well as board games and puzzles. A toy box is in the living room awaiting curious kids.

The kitchen is fully equipped with pots and pans and dishes as well as baking pans for the industrious cooks in the family. The dining table will accommodate up to 12 to sit together on chairs and benches. There is a king bed in the master bedroom, which has a slider and a private deck overlooking the lake. There is a full size bed in its own room. There are two bunks and a trundle for the kids. In the living room, the couch pulls out for two more to sleep. Sheets, pillows, and blankets are provided.

This cottage is only a mile from the dune park ORV entrance. There is ample parking for multiple cars (4-5) or your dune toys on a trailer.

About Connie Van Huis

The Van Huis family has been coming up to Silver Lake from Holland for many years. It is like a second home to us -- so we finally purchased a second home there. Our family usually hangs out in the dunes with our Jeeps. We love the town and the friendly people. Now you can enjoy the unique sights and sounds of Silver Lake. We know you will have a special place in your heart for it once you have been here!

The property was clean and everything worked. However...

  • 3 of 5

While clean with everything functioning, we were disappointed with some features. First, the property is listed as accommodating as many as 10 guests but it was really too small for the 9 we had visiting (and 3 were kids ages 6 and under). Sleeping areas were cramped and there was very little seating in the living room area. In fairness the deck was huge and the private beach was a plus. The beach, however, was not "zero depth" meaning there was a about a 2 foot retaining wall that put you in a muddy, shallow area. Second, the water tasted bad and for some of our stay was rust colored. We chose to buy bottled water for drinking, coffee and cooking. Third, the property was listed as having AC but only 1 upstairs bedroom had a window unit.

Owner's Response: The note left for us said these guests had a great time, and that is what we hope all our guests can say. Accurate pictures of the sleeping areas, seating, and seawall are all in the listing. We have ample sleeping (12), and every family situation is different, so it is important to make sure the arrangement of the beds fits a family. The lake bottom is sandy, but not beautiful beach sand like in Lake Michigan. The cottage does not have central air, but there is a window unit in the master bedroom.

Silver Lake has that real vacation-town feel. There is a lot to do! Walk up in the unique Silver Lake Sand Dunes, 600-plus acre dune area where trucks and buggies play on the big hills. Rent a buggy or a Jeep and join them! Head to town and rent a personal watercraft and enjoy Lower Silver Lake with its dunes and beaches. There is a Craig's Cruisers for family fun including Go Karts, a Slick Track, Bumper Boats. There are Bumper Cars to play in, and another Go Kart track just for little kids. Take the zip line for a bird's-eye view. Stop in at Dune Town or other shops in town for unusual things, t-shirts, and toys. Tastee Kreations Ice Cream shop also has the best burgers and fries in town. The Sands Restaurant offers a stromboli that must be tried. The General Store and The Point gas station offer groceries and other goods. Enjoy the endless parade of off-road vehicles sporting their dune flags. A walk downtown is never boring! For those staying over Sunday, we recommend Cornerstone Community Church for a small-church, big-God experience. There are a few really nice golf courses. But just strolling the sun-dappled, cottage-lined streets around the lake can be just the low-key stimulus a stressed vacationer is looking for.

Within 35 miles:

Less than 2 miles east -- Golden Sands Golf Course. Other golf courses in the area as well!

2 miles north -- West Michigan Sand Dragway. Saturday nights at the sand drags are not to be compared. Bracket racing for quads, rails, Jeeps, Trucks, and sand-flinging dragsters.

3 miles south -- Silver Lake, the town. Restaurants, shopping, go carts, bumper cars, bumper boats, mini golf, watercraft rentals, etc. Fun for the whole family, and a constant parade of flag-bearing off-road vehicles.

5 miles west -- Little Sable Point Light House, on the Lake Michigan shore, is a great place to visit. Tour the 1874, working lighthouse (approx $3/person). Swim in the Big Lake. Enjoy the beach and a sunset.

5 miles east -- Hart offers a fun little town with grocery stores, banks, hardware store, shops, and library. Old time country fair the 3rd week of August.

8 miles north -- Pentwater lays north on winding forested roads or US-31, offers a great fishing area and a plethora of shops and restaurants.

18 miles south -- New Era has a lot to do! 1) Country Dairy is a working dairy farm in New Era. Tour the farm and see how milk gets from the farm to the shelves in the grocery store. 2)Rainbow Ranch Horseback Riding offers trail riding, riding lessons, and hay rides 3) Lewis Farm Market and Petting Farm offers home grown produce, fruit orchards, market with gifts and and goodies and a bakery. The petting farm has a wide variety of animals and birds.

20 miles -- Ludington, just 20 miles north on US-31, is a busy small city with a Walmart, phone stores, and restaurants. There is also an equestrian event over the 4th of July, a very nice fair in August, the ferry to Wisconsin, and a House of Flavors Ice Cream Shop that boasts 31 flavors of hard ice cream. Many fun shops in the old downtown district. Beautiful Lake Michigan beach and pier await you.

32 miles -- Michigan Adventure Water Park/Theme Park. Travel south on US-31 to Whitehall for a day of roller coasters, water slides and thrills.
