About April

We are a family of four who live in Southern California but love the mountains. We fell in love with this home on a family vacation and decided this is where we wanted to make long lasting memories. We put our heart and soul into renovating this house and making it a place we would want to stay on vacation. It has the feel of the mountains with all the amenities of the city.

April purchased this house in 2010

Why April chose Big Bear

We love that Big Bear is truly a year round outdoors town. In the winter there is snow for skiing, sledding and making snowpeople. In the summer we enjoy boating on the lake, which is one of the most uncrowded in the state. In spring and fall the weather is mild enough to hike and truly enjoy nature. It also has a great Village with restaurants and shopping. We love Big Bear!

What makes this house unique

We love walking around our neighborhood as each home is unique and has its own curb appeal. We relish the outdoor dining areas where we can eat, drink and watch the kids run around the huge yard. We enjoy being 5 minutes from Starbucks and Vons.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We have done a nature based family reunion for 12 years. It is 3 families with a total of 7 kids under 15. We have stayed in Julian, Arrowhead, Tahoe, Palm Desert and Yosemite. We always rent a house from VRBO and they always look perfect on the website. Many have lived up to our expectations but this is the only one that has ever completely blown us away. It is a completely open floor plan so wherever you are in the house you can socialize except the game room, which is the perfect place to have kids watch movies while the adults hang out. The backyard is spectacular with grass for soccer or bocci ball and flowers galore. The hot tub looks like a pond and it was a hit. We ate outdoors every night and the owner has beautiful place settings so you can really put together a beautiful table. Beds are high quality so everyone slept well and 3 full bathrooms gave each family space to spread out. Can not say enough good things. We already booked again for next year!

Little disappointed

  • 3 of 5

The owners need to change cleaning people. There was popcorn under one bed, hair in one of the bathtubs, quite a bit of dust and dirt behind the laundry room door and the carpeting was in big need of cleaning. Also disappointed that there weren't any kitchen cooking spoons to stir pots and pans with. The runner in the back of the trash can area was not screwed down and the trash can fell forward when you brought it out. The spa took many many hours to heat. It would have been nice to have some little instructions to go with the TV-maybe a list of channels so that you weren't having to channel surf. I don't understand why owners think that other people know how to use the appliances, fireplace, etc. Also TV's, even small ones in the bedrooms would have been nice. Some people use TV's to relax in the evening. The pool table area is really hot when the heat is on and nothing to prop open the door. Many possibilities for a fabulous stay but not up there yet.

Owner's Response: Dear Jeane- Thank you for your thoughtful review. I know you had a lot of questions prior to booking and then staying at the cabin. We definitely tried to accommodate your many requests. I have contacted our cleaning company with your concerns. Up until this point we have only received 5 stars on cleanliness so hopefully they just had a bad day. Two of the four bedrooms have televisions as well as cvs in the game room and living room. Each has a manual in the drawer underneath the television with instructions on use. We have re-attached the garbage can- sometimes with large groups people tend to push down on it too hard taking it off the track. After your review we did purchase and stock the kitchen with a new set of cooking utensils although I found 3 large spoons we already had in the drawer with other utensils- now we have 6. The carpet was cleaned in October but I am looking into whether it needs it again. The spa does take 2 hours to heat up and we do suggest in welcoming email that guests turn it on upon arrival. Appreciate the feedback.

Oktoberfest in Big Bear!

  • 5 of 5

We had such an amazing time last weekend in Big Bear and this home was perfect! There were 3 families totalling 10 people. The bedrooms were a good size all with queen beds. The kids loved the playroom and the bunk beds. They also loved that their area was separate from the adults! The kitchen and living room areas are beautiful! The large open space is perfect for big groups. The outdoor patio was awesome. We sat outside most of the time and enjoyed the beauty of the backyard while the kids played in the leaves. The Jacuzzi was also great! It was big enough to fit all of us at once. It was such an amazing Fall weekend and the neighbourhood is beautiful. We enjoyed a walk around the neighbourhood exploring the beauty. This was truly a great home and we will definitely be back in a few months!

Beautiful home for a group!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay! We were there for a working retreat and it was a perfect meeting space in a beautiful home and location! We were also, able to easily cook meals together. The home is spacious, lovely, and well appointed. The yard is beautiful and sitting on the patio was perfect for relaxing, eating, meeting, and enjoying the outdoors! The kids enjoyed the hot tub and game room. A perfect home for a small group getaway, retreat, or family time. We will definitely look into going back!

Large House Perfect for Family Reunions

  • 4 of 5

Our grown children came in with their families from different directions. Our eldest daughter arrived first to find the sheets and towels were tossed into the laundry room and the beds unmade. It seems the local maintenance company didn't know the house had been rented. Once the owners were notified, the cleaning crew arrived to take care of it, but we had to stay out of the way instead of settling in and it took a couple of hours off what was to be our first gathering in more than a year.

That being said, the house was wonderful, with plenty of space for different ages and interests could play and talk without getting in each others' way. The game room, although it felt a little cave-like, was a wonderful place for boisterous kids to hang out and when the door was closed the noise didn't carry to the rest of the house. The beds are comfortable and although it was a hot weekend, as long as the windows were open and fans rotating, the house was mostly comfortable, A/C would have been nice during the hottest part of the day.

There is room for 4 cars in the driveway which would be important during snowy seasons, when signs are posted about not parking in the street and blocking snow plows.

I understand that several things had been recently replaced but we still found some issues with a broken unsafe tile on one of the outside tables and the deck railings are in need of attention...overall, the wooden things outdoors could stand to be sanded & refinished but in fairness, I imagine that would be an annual chore with the winter weather being what it is.

Because of the nature of our gathering, we didn't try the local restaurants, but opted to make preparing meals part of our experience and the kitchen is ample with plenty of plates, utensils, pots & pans, etc - there's even a full spice rack. Although there wasn't one dining table large enough for our whole group to sit together at once, that didn't prove to be a problem as the kids usually finished as the adults were starting.

We found a nice hike that even the littlest children could do and there are plenty for the more dedicated, but were unable to find a trail just across the road as described in the literature - bring your hiking book or topo maps for serious hikers, walking the roads of the neighborhood provide a good after-dinner walk with some hills.

There's a bowling alley in town.. It is fairly small and there were leagues going on, but they keep some lanes open for folks like us.

Owner's Response: Dear Jacqueline, Thank you for your thorough review. We are so glad that you and your family were able to enjoy our wonderful home as it has brought us years of joy. We do apologize again for the mix up in cleaning schedule and are glad we were able to get someone out there within an hour to prepare the house for you and deliver items throughout the weekend as you contacted us. In the past year we have replaced the carpet, living room furniture, all linens throughout the house, pool table and dishware so that our guests feel like they are in a well appointed home rather than some of the rentals with mix match items. This obviously did not go unnoticed in the kitchen even if we did not have the specific casserole dish you needed. We, like most homes in Big Bear, do not have A/C which is accurately stated in the listing. We have also tried to accurately state how many people can sit at each table in our listing so that people can choose the best home for their family vacations. We have received rave reviews on our backyard as most rentals do not have fully landscaped yards or multiple outdoor dining areas. It was the first time that we were contacted about where a missing battleship for the Battleship Game would be but we did try to be accommodating for that and the other requests like baking dishes, extra towels, dishwasher pods, paper products, cleaning supplies that were requested throughout your three day stay. The house does have a maximum of 12 occupants, and your initial request listed 10 guests, when in fact there were 15 so this may not have been the right rental for your large family and contributed to you running short on supplies that we replenished during your 3 day stay. We are glad you enjoyed your stay in our home and hope you have many more happy reunions. April (Owner)
